Yes! Just Three guys playing a Blues/Rock song. I have been listening to The Top since 1974. They are the best at Down and Dirty Texas Swing, Blues and Rock. Can’t get much better than these Men!!!!!

This was prime, old school ZZ Top before they became a Top 10 radio band. I like Legs and Tush, but it just doesn't compare to their original blues/rock sound. Jesus Just Left Chicago, Heard It On the X and Blue Jean Blues are all well worth checking out....and many more!

One of ZZ TOP most successful songs. Written about a brothel in LA Grange, Texas.Based on traditional boogie blues rhythm used by John Lee Hooker. One great rockin' band that you need to do yourself a favour Harri and get to groovin' with. They'll blow your socks off. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Bennett. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

This song is about the Chicken Ranch an illegal brothel in the U.S. state of Texas that operated from 1905 until 1973. I saw these guys in play at small gym in 1969 and a few years later at a different venue do this song

Though "Spirit In The Sky" has a similar riff, the real inspiration for both tunes, (and many others) is most likely from John Lee Hooker who had a similar sound in the 50's and 60's. He also had a cameo in The Blues Brothers Movie. Check him out. He's a seminal Blues artist.

If you've ever seen the movie Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds), this is about that place (the Chicken Ranch) and it wasn't that far from Texas A&M University in College Station...so they always had some customers, ha. Was located outside of La Grange, TX which is a little over an hour from where I live. ZZ had some good hits and made some great videos. Billy Gibbons played a guest character on the TV Series Bones from 2005-2017. In the episode "The Man in the Fallout Shelter", it was revealed Angela's father is Billy Gibbons, a member of the band ZZ Top. Her middle name is supposedly "Pearly Gates", which is also the name of Billy Gibbons' 1959 Les Paul guitar.

👍 Time keeps on ticking... Going through a box of old ticket stubs not long ago, My first rock concert May 19, 1973 (Dusty Hill's 24th birthday, I've come to find out) East Tennessee State University Rory Gallagher ZZ Top $4 It was about six months before Tres Hombres came out. Rory Gallagher was pure fire right out of the gate, and I think he had as much fun as anyone. (& someone you should check out) Then, BG and the boys came out. Back when they were the most badass blues rock band that ever was. Straw hats, jeans, no beards (but Frank. lol), and BG in a white tshirt w/ pack of Marlboros rolled up in the sleeve(lol). Needless to say, Rory and BG made a big impression on a 16 yr old. Blues rock, slide guitar nut ever since. RIP Dusty, Rory, Lou, Rod. Thank You!

It's just those three guys. Guitarist Billy Gibbens and Jimi Hendrix met up while Jimi was in Texas (where ZZ Top is from) in 1967. Billy Gibbons was only 19 years old, and just out of High School in Texas. Hendrix so impressed with the young Gibbons, and the Band, He asked them to be the warmup Band on Hendrix European tour with "The Jimi Hendrix Experience." they did and became close pals. Hendrix said the young Billy Gibbons was one of the best Blues guitarists he had heard. only 2 of the fellas left, as Bass player Dusty Hill died a couple of years ago. They are all in their mid to late 70s these days. Saw them in concert in Seattle Washington (Home of Jimi Hendrix) in1977. It was an amazing show, with live cattle and Vultures on the stage, they sounded amazing. Love these guys. Play more ZZ Top. Thanks, Harri

Fire! Pure Fire! Reminds me of John Lee Hooker. Few guitarists can pinch the notes the way Billy Gibbons does on this song. The birds come out to sing along when I play it in my backyard. They also come out for the slide guitar in "Just Got Paid". They dig high pitched chirps apparently. When you can, check out ZZ Top's cover of the Sam & Dave classic "I Thank You". It's hard and gritty with one of the meanest guitar tones you'll ever hear.

Hi Harri ... Don't know if I mentioned this to you before but, if I did, you may have forgotten. Anyway, since you noticed that only 2 of the 3 guys have beards ... I wanna point out that that's pretty funny, considering that the drummer ... the guy who DOESN'T have a beard, is the 1 named Frank Beard 🧔😊👍😎. That ain't no joke (all the bad English/grammar was done on purpose). About their sound, they seem to pull it off live, and quite well, somehow, but in this version, there's clearly rhythm guitar cranking out in the background WHILE he's playing that incredible lead so, I think there must have been some overdubbing going on in the studio.

The song was a huge hit here in the Houston area. They were local boys. La Grange is a small town just west of Houston that was infamous for it's brothel. A local news reporter " Marvin Zindler" busted the brothel sometime around the introduction of this song.

Harri, ZZ Top had many great hits in the 80's as well, but they were not nearly as raw as their 70's stuff. As far as Spirit in the Sky influence, I think it would be more fair to say that both songs were inspired by some of the same classic blues.

Definitely recorded with different guitar tracks. I will get hate for saying it but their live experience suffered a bit because it wasn't possible to duplicate most of their recorded masterpieces. But they made up for it with downright straight boogin rock n roll. Saw em many times. A couple of times with Skynyrd in the mid 70s. Noone could follow Freebird. Noone. Man those were great days!

Harri, go back and mine their first 4 albums. They’re a master class in blues/rock, and foundational to the Classic Era. Try the he first two songs from the same album (Tres Hombres) called, Waiting For The Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago. Both are always played together (they’re connected). From the studio B side of Fandango, checkout a deep track called, Nasty Dogs And Funky Kings, which is an all be it too short masterpiece, followed by, Bluejean Blues. Finally, one of Billy’s most expressive blues compositions on the album, Rio Grande Mud called, Sure Got Cold After The Rain Fell. Love the channel, and your choices, Regards
