A little too much John Lee Hooker for at least one person. The publisher and copyright holder of the John Lee Hooker song "Boogie Chillen'" sued but lost. This case led to some changes in American copyright law, and ZZ Top settled out of court. The details are on the Wikipedia page for "Boogie Chillen'."
I have been fortunate to have seen “That Little Ol’ Band From Texas” Live 4 times. I recorded the last show (Full HD) before Dusty passed away. Always an awesome show. You must see many other tunes from them including “Rough Boy” (official video)…. “Same three guys, same three cords, for five decades” - Billy Gibbons at last show.
Me too. I remember seeing them on stage singing while spinning their guitars in synch and then a big puff of smoke and they disappeared from stage in the middle of the song. About 10 seconds later the auditorium doors 50 yards from the stage behind us swung open and they walked through the doors playing their guitars walking down the isle back toward the stage. It was frickin amazing. Never forgot that epic mind trick and I attended that concert many years ago during the 80’s in Hollywood, Florida. ✌️
This is a Must See......4 black brothers with a white drummer created this ICONIC Masterpiece from the 60’s Psychedelic Era Trust me…. You do not want your life to end without hearing this song. “TIME HAS COME TODAY“- The Chambers Brothers - Album Long version, then Live. PLEASE and Thank You. 1,595,600+ views so far. YOU will like it too
La Grange!!! A classic !!! If you wanna hear something as good but more of their early blues stuff try: waitin' for the bus/ Jesus Just Let Chicago 🔥 Billy Gibbons also did a some great duets with John Fogerty ( CCR)
I read once someone asked Paul McCartney what it was like play with the worlds greatest rock & roll band, he replied I don’t recall ever playing with ZZ Top.
Jimmy Hendrix said during an interview on the "Dick Cavett Show" answering to the question of how it felt like to be the greatest guitar player in the world, "I don't know, you'll have to ask Billy Gibbons!" He and Billy were good friends after the pre-ZZ Top band of the same members opened for him at a gig. The Band, "The Warlocks'", did not have enough material to fill their time. So, they filled their close with two of Hendrix's songs. He told them they had "Ball's" and the rest is history.
I’m also pretty sure they’ve heard this song before in a movie. Can’t think of any specific movies myself but I know it’s been in a couple movies that involved driving fast on the road. Maybe the Dukes of Hazards movie that came out in the 2000’s
I was fortunate enough to spend time in Central Texas at Fort Hood after my time in Vietnam. I had a buddy who invited me down to Houston to meet his family and enjoy the music scene. It was 1971. Wow! ZZTop! Wow!! That was a show in a very small venue. Great music. Great people. Texas! Houston! So real and so much fun! Great time for great music!! Thanks for the ride back in time!
This is the original recording in the studio and it's always an excellent choice. And that groove that you're talking about is called shufflin' in C….Killer blues structure.
You guys are fun to watch, keep it going! Your honesty is refreshing! Please do Won’t get fooled again by the who off of the Who’s Next album. It was a 1970’s rock anthem and Keith Moons drumming is off the charts!
Yes WHOS NEXT in my top three album’s all time Getty Lee from Rush once said if he were stranded on an island and only had a record player and 3 albums to play WHOS NEXT would be one of them
Frank Beard was indeed the only beardless ZZ Top member. Great drummer. I gotta give him his props. I doubt Neil Peart had Frank's blues timing and feel. It was a great era for drummers and everything else. So much talent!
I've always been a huge fan of their pre-80's albums: ZZ Top's First Album, Rio Grande Mud, Tres Hombres, Fandango!, Tejas, Deguello. I was fortunate enough to see them in concert in Tampa, FL 3 or 4 years ago. RIP Dusty Hill
Speaking of 3 man bands, I'm hoping you guys get to the classic Jimi Hendrix Experience LPs like Are You Experienced and Axis Bold As Love. Electric Ladyland, Cry of Love, Band of Gypsys and the various live albums and comps are amazing too but start at the beginning as they sound like no other band from that time. After 55 years they're still exciting and sound incredibly fresh.
You guys are kicking ass! Dont worry about the critics. If you weren't given the info of the preferred recording then it's not on you. It's not like y'all have a subscription to e.s.p. or something, so...let them own that one. I love y'alls reactions! Keep on trucking guys, y'all are a ton of fun to watch. Thanks! 😍
I’m no music expert, but that groove is almost assuredly a blues riff that has been used by many rock and blues musicians for quite sometime. Rock n roll wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for the blues. It would be interesting to see if anyone could find the originator of that riff. My favorite ZZ TOP song for sure.
Greatest Three Man Bands…. Jimi Hendrix Experience,,,, Cream… Rush… ZZ TOP…Crosby Stills Nash…Stevie Ray Vaughn - Double Trouble…Triumph…Emerson Lake and Palmer… Grand Funk Railroad… The Police… America.
ZZ Top are Texas Icons no questions asked! Rest Easy Dusty Hill! Over 50 years and was always in tune with the streets of HTown! Undoubtedly some of the greatest to ever do it! 💪🏾💯
Blue collar, working man, Texas rock and roll. Thanks ya'll. Really enjoy watching you discover music I grew up with. Check out Nasty dogs and Funky Kings.
😮get 8th. Pretty ZZ Top, they gotta song, it's called barbecue barbecue allright everybody likes a barbecue ZZ dot blocks at barbecue. I love it, she loves it, and to have it. We'll have a barbecue still barbecue z z
If you're a woman leaves you and you're crying, the boys, and you're just in a horrible tire Right not kind of mode diseasily it take care of you It's called after the rain fail after the rainfall T c top doing after the rain fail i'm waiting from my sky it was It was from my a y e not from moscow from my eye😊
A fresh channel you have here guys, I love how you break things down. You hit the nail on the head when you commented on ZZ Top's comedic lyrics. It seems they do like to have a li'l fun with their music. I read some years ago Gillette offered Billy and Dusty a million $ to shave their beards off. They turned it down and said something like, 'you folks wouldn't like what's underneath'. Albums, Rio Grande Mud, Tres Hombres, Deguello and Tejas is where the band are at their best.
My man is repping those COWBOYS 🤠! Love my COWBOYS and ZZ Top! Y'all should check out "Fool For Your Stockings ". It's old ZZ Top and Bluesy as hell. 👌
Ooooohhh YYyyyyyeeeaaaahh fellas from Ned and it's the ORIGINAL MIX TOO !! One of the times Billy Gibbons straps on his Strat rather than his beloved Gibson Les Paul, Ms Pearly Gates !
'Warms my heart seein' people on that discovery trail. ZZT used to show up on the set of HBO's DEADWOOD series just to watch and enjoy the filming. They fit right in with all the other extras for the crowd scenes. If you haven't seen that series, worth checking out.
Billy Gibbons is a guitar God. I got to see them on their Recycler album tour. They were excellent. That Texas boogie gets right under your skin and makes you move. If you like their bluesy stuff, you need to check out their tune called A Fool For Your Stockings.
Saw em several times in the 70s. First time in 73 opening for Deep Purple. That's a band you should check out. I'd recommend the song "lazy". Do the studio version, but the Made in Japan live version is fun. The audio kinda sucks though. Ya boy was the first reaction dude that picked up on the brothel reference that I've seen. Good on ya. Capt.Bob, SV ( Sailing Vessel) 27th Chance ,Tampa Fl, USA 🇺🇸
You nailed it with the comment about how much sound these 3 guys put out. If you haven’t already, try some Jeff Beck, the guitar God of guitar Gods. May I suggest “Ambitious” from the LP Flash, 1985. Luv you two. 👍
ZZ Top was a very good live band. They had some years in there that here in Texas a few too many Nazi CONfedeRacy flags in the audience so I strayed. But when you dig into ZZ's history, almost everything they do is an homage to black roots R&B. Texas is full of enigmatic codes.
The blue jays and mockingbirds always come out to sing along whenever I play "La Grange" in the back yard. I guess the string pinches in the guitar solo sound like bird calls to them or something.
The thing I like about their songs is that they leave a lot of room to just jam. This song is about 3 minutes, but when I saw them live they played this song for 8 minutes.
Sleeping Bag ! Highly overlooked song. Crazy guitar work. Cheap Sunglasses!!!! epic riff work on that one too I Thank You! Omg...could be the heaviest base line I've ever heard!
One of my favorite stories about this song was a guy strolling down the street. All he heard was the first minute or so coming through an upstairs window. He actually found the song by Googling "a how how how how."
I was at the 1974 Labor Day Weekend concert at the University of Texas’, Memorial Stadium. Billed as “The Rompin' Stompin' Texas Size Barn Dance and Barbecue” was hosted by Texas trio ZZ Top, with a lineup that included Santana, Bad Company, Joe Cocker and Jimmy Page - and 80,000 sweaty fans. Was the last concert held in that stadium, it got trashed. What a show, the beards were still short, rhinestones on their attire, longhorn, rattlesnakes… Texas baby and we’re loud and proud.
I love to see you two jamming out to my fav ZZ Top song! I was a teen in the 80's with the Eliminator album but for me it's old school ZZ Top for the fire 🔥
ZZ had trouble getting gigs out of Texas in the beginning..They finally got a gig in a blues revue at the Overtones Park Shell in Memphis..They weren't scheduled to hit the stage till 1100 at night ....They walked out to a standing room only crowd....They were finally out. Memphis Ardent Studios did I think their first 3_albums..Billy Gibbons liked Memphis a lot.You could catch him sometimes at Molly Gonzales LA casita having a meal or drinks .He was easy to talk to
You should consider doing I’m Bad, And Nationwide Nasty Dogs & Funky Kings Just Got Paid All by ZZ Top. Great review guys. I’m enjoying your reaction, over everyone else. Keep up the good work.
ZZ Top Rules! My second favorite 3 man band. 1. RUSH 2. ZZ Top 3. Triumph Everything up to Eliminator was original ZZ Top artistry. After Eliminator their record producers wanted their music to "sound like" Eliminator. Sad.
Straight up Texas weirdness. Your song selection is fearless, Commentary insightful, not filling airtime for likes. You post ,I'm going to watch. Makes for a great evening. My dad spun a lot of Floyd on that stacked pioneer system. He is a true blue dyed in the wool Californian dragstrip gearhead. My mom is straight up Beatles, Elvis (natch) Everly Brothers and Engelbert Humperdinck. You two bring the jams. Thank you. Keep selecting and keep posting
Yes three man band there's an alternative rock from the 90's that was so close to original rock and roll they were never that popular in the alternative rock genre. Take a look at the band Dada puzzle' dizzknee land, dim, dorina to start. Big favor one of the best rock bands in the 90s. All three are talented best kept secret band from the 90's. You guys are cool as brothers can be.
Loved growing up with coming up in my area of Houston. Saw them twice both were before they made it big. Love my hometown boys. " Blue Jean Blues" would be my next. Enjoy
The groove .... John Lee Hooker. Haw Haw ... John Lee .... The voice John Lee , Lighting Hopkins. The boyz are from Houston. In the 50s and 60s they could drop in and hear all these unfashionable blues players. Then the 13th Floor Elevators from Austin invented Psychedelic Rock and they started a band called The Moving Sidewalks then they totally embraced Texas Blues as ZZ TOP.
Correct version, guys. Oddly, this version is in mono, not stereo. Don't think I've ever heard it in mono, before. Quite often, you have to listen to a bunch of posts of the same song tyo find one that sounds good. Keep up the good work, guys.
I saw two guys at work get in a fist fight over which three man band, Rush or ZZ Top, was the better band. Thank goodness someone was able to break it up before a supervisor came around.
Jimi Hendrix Was On The Late Show W/Johnny Carson..& Carson Asked Jimi..”What Is It Like 2B The Best Guitar Player In The World?” Jimi Said “I’m Not..There’s This Really Cool Cat From Texas..Named Billy Gibbons (ZZ TOP) He’s The Best Guitar Player In The 🌎!!”
The other 3 piece band you need to dive into the rabbit hole on is the Police. Every Little Thing She Does is Magic, Roxanne, or Message in a Bottle are great places to start! Stuart Copeland (drummer) is in that upper echelon with Peart, Bruce, Moon, and Bonham imo.
