Which intercooler?

@@betabeta-tk7qv ZZP makes a front-mount intercooler, but if you have an Eco like me, it won’t fit due to the electric flaps in the bumper

I believe you can remove the shutters and have someone like BNR tune out the shutter code, but don’t quote me on that.

I'm skipping out on the turbo due to mine being an ecotec. Going with an aftermarket exhaust, cold air intake, and performance chip. Should be able to get to about 211hp and 220 torque. Hopefully anyway.

Nope! Actually after this video I had to replace it (PCV diaphragm failure) so I just replaced it with a Dorman unit, which has a little support pin that's supposed to keep that from happening again. The car mods are just enough to support this turbo. Nothing extra done to it. It runs great, and should have been like this from the factory

You're basically at the threshold of 93 octane here. This is a massive improvement over stock. If you want better 0-60 you need to be looking at other cars than a Cruze.

Yeah it would definitely come off a light much harder than a stock turbo car. This car is mostly a highway driver. So it needed the top end power more than the punch. But it got both.

The car's other mods are zzp intercooler, bnr downpipe (the rest of the exhaust is stock), k&n intake, bosch 42#injectors, and ngk bkr8eix spark plugs. This is 93 octane pump gas. Zzp is who's tuning it. And this is just the standard non-ported housing.

@@Jesus90mendoza make sure you get a larger intercooler before you get the turbo, the stock one is terrible and heat soaks extremely quickly and will cost you a lot of horsepower. And ill head on over and check it out!

Yep, directly bolts on just like the stock turbo. Completely plug and play. Make sure you buy new turbo mounting nuts and studs, as this turbo doesn't come with them. Also wouldn't hurt to replace the coolant lines and fittings at the turbo, as well as the oil feed and drain. The oil drain is plastic and will break upon removal. The absolute bare bones supporting mods you will need will be the Bosch 42 pound (green giant) injectors, cold air intake, intercooler, and downpipe. The car in this video has all of those mods but still has the stock cat back exhaust even, which probably costs us a couple horsepower but isn't super detrimental since we are least have the downpipe.

In this case, back when I installed this turbo, nobody really had video showing how it runs on pump gas in an automatic car. So I installed the turbo and made my own to share!

This turbo is for both the LUJ and LUV engines. I would think it would work, just make sure you email or call ZZperformance to verify it will before you buy anything. Also make sure they can tune the Buick as well.

Stock is fine, take off cats

The ZZP v3 Ported if you want a faster spool, or get the even stronger Z04 when it comes out for the Cruze. (They currently only have the Chevy Sonic version.) You're not gonna unlock any turbo's true potential without doing the cam/ported intake/42# injectors/CAI though, but you'll get about 70-80% of it without all that.

BNR also sells a turbo setup that supposedly gives you an extra 250 HP for around $1700. But Idk, I've never verified, but I can vouch for the v3 ported!

If I owned the car, I probably would. It's my wife's daily driver, and the end goal was to make this thing actually have some passing power on the highway, which this definitely does now. Isn't a race car but also isn't a turd like it was stock.

@@GTkyle I can 100% understand that my friend. That was my original goal too as the Cruze originally was my wife's. These things are VERY unsafe stock, ZERO get up and go. So I get it. We got her a 22 Equinox instead, so the Cruze has become MY daily. Haha. If you ever decide to make it a toy, lmk. I've done everything ZZP on mine so I can answer questions. I even did the pistons, springs, and retainers. Your video is one of the ones I watched before buying the v3 though. 😆

@@GTkyle I definitely wanna get it to the drag strip and run some 1/4 mile runs! I also plan to have it on the dyno soon too so I can pull some actual #s not just tuner estimations for out #s. I'm also going to convert this A6 to an M6. I'm gonna try to find a Malibu trans, but I may have to use the M5 from the Cruzes. Either way, the automatics in these are so slow. 🤣

@@cruzecollective you know. That's one thing I don't have a complaint about, after this video I had Tim bump up the shift pressures/reduce shift time command and it's pretty crisp now. Downshifts are responsive and it does pretty well. Of course I prefer manual trans but I can't knock the 6 speed.

Yes absolutely. The intercooler needs upgraded even with the stock turbo. This car has a zzp intercooler

It does make a good bit more compressor noise than the stock turbo but the air rushing noise is definitely prominent. it didn't pick up well on camera. Also this intake is a K&N. It's a hot air intake, stupid design. Car already had it though, prior to turbo install.

Yes it must be tuned. You need the zzp intercooler, a cold air intake, a high flow downpipe, 42 pound injectors, and tuning to run this turbo. You need 1 step colder spark plugs gapped to .028" and you need to run premium fuel as well. 91 or 93 octane, whatever is highest in your area

It all depends how much money you want to spend. The cars stock make around 110hp. This setup is somewhere around 200hp and it's all easy stuff. Turbo, intercooler, injectors, spark plugs, downpipe, tune. You can go up from there one step by doing camshafts/valve springs. Then another step up switching to e85, getting mid 200s. I've heard of guys with built engines getting into 300 territory with the properly sized turbo. But I don't know details. Check out zzperformance RU-vid channel, They recently came out with a bolt on turbo that's bigger than this one and they've been doing a daily driver type build with it over the past several months

@@GTkyle Stock 1.4T makes 138HP. Gen2's make a little more at 153. 👍

@@mikes.4811 I was referring to wheel horsepower. The gen 1 makes 110 wheel horsepower, and to my completely uncalibrated butt-dyno, I'm guessing 200 wheel horsepower where it stands currently. It's a substantial gain in horsepower for a couple grand. The car still isn't fast, but it will at least safely travel down an on-ramp now.

@@GTkyle Gotcha. Plan on getting the V3 turbo, ZZP intercooler and E85 (and everything it needs to run it). Already tuned with BNR, so thats covered.

@@mikes.4811 have you seen the new Z04 turbo? I'd imagine it lags a bit more than the big wheel v3 but definitely would have more headroom. Assuming you plan to get into cams and valve springs and whatnot as well.

Yes. Also requires larger fuel injectors, upgraded intercooler, downpipe, and cold air intake. This car is remote tuned by ZZP themselves.

Still good, around 50,000 miles since the turbo and counting. The 1-2 shift was firmed up in later revisions of this tune so if that's what your worry was, it was handled after this video. Car has 184,000 on it currently.

Yeah this was before tuning was finished. The 1-2 shift had timing reduced and line pressure increased with the next 2 revisions, and shifts nice and firm now.

@@eliwagner3190 gas mileage is the same. Reliability is to be determined, since its only been a few thousand miles. They did fix the hotside issue that plauges the stock turbos and causes them to crack. You must do an intercooler, downpipe, and 42#injectors with this turbo. I highly recommend it thoigh. The car stock was embarrassingly slow. Now it gets out of its own way.

@@eliwagner3190 I'm sure BNR could handle it no problem. And dont bother spending all that money to set the car up and neuter it on 87 octane. Its only a couple extra dollars per tank. You honestly should be running 93 as it is, this is a turbocharged engine after all. The manufacturers only have to make them run on 87 to idiot-proof the engine, but power is sacrificed. I know all about the 93 octane life, the cruze is one of 5 vehicles owned between my wife and i, and they all are tuned and modded and only accept 93. Except for my focus ST which is currently running e30.

I actually want to mod my cruze but I don't want to blow the motor or cause a check engine light. I would also have to retune my cruze. I have a Trifecta Tune. any tips?@@GTkyle

@@Jon-ub2hr I'd have to check my receipts but I think I put this turbo on around 130,000 miles and its got almost 180,000 now. It's all on how you drive it and maintain it. Drive it easy until it's fully up to operating temp, 5k oil changes with dexos oil, no low rpm lugging if it's a manual. Yes you will have to retune. You'll need the turbo, 42# injectors, a cold air intake, intercooler, and downpipe to make this all work. This car is running stock exhaust still which has been fine. I say do it. Just make sure you do it right. Buy all new coolant and oil lines for the turbo as well as the gasket and hardware kit (Dorman makes both of these as complete kits). Do a fresh oil change and put new coolant in while you do this work. It's definitely worth the couple grand in parts that it costs to do. That stock turbo is a joke, and all the stock ones crack inside the exhaust housing. That's what got the ball rolling on upgrading this one to the zzp

Just the bypass valve that comes equipped on this turbo. And a k&n intake.

Using the "menu" buttom on the turn signal stalk, push it until you see "vehicle information menu". Then, use the arrows (the part near the end of the turn signal stalk that you can twist) to scroll through the list. You'll find coolant temp in that list.

Yeah, it runs good now with this setup. Also just found the intake PCV check valve failed and was likely bad during the whole tuning process, so now the car builds another 2psi, flows another 1 lb/min airflow and spools a few hundred rpm faster.

Never actually tried on this car. It does run good now, though. Worth the money for these mods.

I know I have to cut into PCV and brake booster line just wanted more info on that or a guide of some sort, hard to find!

@@ajventura1756 oh sorry, i thought you were asking if it would fit. Ive yet to hear of the manifold, but it shouldnt make any difference to the tuning process.

@@factsforlife0O0 you don't understand, this turbo makes power into the 7,000 rpm range. These shift points are tailored to this turbo's power curve. It would be slower if I tried to shift it any other rpm

@@factsforlife0O0 no, I had ZZP tune this car, they made the turbo and they know these engines. So they tuned it to maximum safe power limits. Car has been running this turbo for about 50,000 miles now.

Because this is my wife's car, it's paid for, and her only complaint with it was the lack of power. So she spent a couple grand in parts and I fixed that. It's fast enough she can pass people on the highway now. Not everything has to be a racecar.

Why not just buy a twin turbo Supra and be done with it. 🤣
