This is the beginning of a journey with unknown destination. A trial and error project wich destiny is yet to be unfolded. One man and his search and love for vintage gear. One man trying to find out what they can do and what he missed growing up without funds to buy some of this stuff.
A musician, guitarist and a songwriter stuck between the 80's and the present with far too many vst instruments and too little time. I hope to see you soon and that you would like to contribute to my channel, please subscribe!

Some would say it’s not so accurate. I say it’s the closest you can get to a real DX7 and considering it’s free makes it a no brainer when it comes to DX7 Vst. I haven’t tried OP7 but almost every other vst and they all are good in their own ways but I prefer Dexed.
The primary usage was to run it together with the DX7 to make the sound fatter with detune, or use the midi overflow for 32 note polyphony. t's a "Poor man's" DX1 or 1/4'th TX816
@@synthfellow Ya, I had the TX802. With all the Retro hype of FM i kinda regret Selling it, same as my Korg DW8000, I got an M1 and was’t happy with the DWGS sounds, so I exchaned the old DW with an EX and used it together with the TX, it was pre clonewheels. So the TX with multiple outputs was used for the obvious hit sounds and pure organ sounds running thru an old Dynachord CLS-22. Was a pretty decent analog Leslie sim for that time. I was propably one of the few that bothered learning myself how to program those FM sounds. Why I want to hurt those that designed the new Genos 2 and did only give us a preset DX7 engine. How hard could it be to make it accept sysex… I can use all my old sounds from the TX802 in my Kronos and add all the effects you didn’t have back in the days. But its kinda just nostalgia. I really wouldn’t bother paying what it cost to re-purchase all the gear I sold of to pay for newer gear. Its more a regret how little we often sold it for and now much of it is more expensive used than when it was new and interesting.
@@mrdali67 yeah a big part of me keep asking why I keep getting those old synths when it can be done all in the box. I got it all in the computer, more easy access and not prone to breaking or needing a battery change. But then again.. it’s nice to have the real thing.
Hi Brilliant video thanks. Ive just purchased a D50 with a flat internal battery for a bargain price, so I'll definitely be trying this. I have two questions - is the internal Eprom memory in the D50 big enough to hold all the .syx files from the cards?, or do you have to load a card 'as and when' you want to use a particular card, I'm guessing not - as is the memory overwritten each time you load a new card? Also, can you recommend/link a USB to MIDI interface cable that works with the D50 & this software (I know alot of the cheap ones dont work) Thank you in advance
You synth-guys are more pathetic than my grandparents. You are expected to be busy with high-end-high-tech-machines... and instead clinching on stuff of the stone-age. Crazy😂 P. S. : you look like you weren't even born, when the DX came out. I was active those times...and would never ever use this FM ("modicied beeping"). Not the "usual" old man😉
Haha thanks for the compliment about my looks. I was born in 1973 and was only 16 when I had my first synth which was a DX7 😘. And I love the old gear and most of my collection are of nostalgic reasons.
This is what I’ve wanted to see! 🎉 Even with the two doubling the same sounds, what a difference in fatness! I have both and find that to be much richer than doing the same thing on the TX802.
I have been a fan of the DX series of synths ,having got a DX 7 mk 1 when they were released way back in the early 80`s , the TX 816 i managed to get along with the MV 802 mixer , many years later ,they were a fortune when released but since then managed to aquire them :} i have upgraded the display on the DX 7 as well as the rom chip for the extra MIDI functions. i have the original cassette which came with the TX 7 ,think you can get it on sysex try Yamaha musicians TX page .
Back in the 80s I had a friend who had a TX7 that he ran with his guitar and midi. I had a DX21 at the time and really enjoyed the TX7 and really wanted one...but certainly could not afford one...but I did find quite a bargain on an FB-01 which I still have...I also now have a DX7IIFD which I purchased in the 90s. Used, of course, but still works great never thought of using the FB-01 as an expansion though...that detune is amazing!
Nice video! I had no idea that the data slider is outputting data via midi. Please please let it be CC. 😁 (I’ve had my DX7 as my master keyboard in the studio for about 25 years now and to be able to use that slider in the daw (Bitwig) would be really nice.) By the way, does “expander” really means that it’s an addition? My Crumar Bit 01 has “Rack expander” on the front, and it’s just the rack version of the Bit 99.
So what was it _built for?_ Doubling the voice with minimal detune to create pseudo stereo? That could be done with any chorus pedal. I don't get what this was meant to do. I also don't hear much of a difference between single and combined mode.
I guess YT doesn’t really do the sound justice but this is what it was built for. Expanding the DX7 with more voices and new possibilities. As someone commented, there are patches made specific for the combination.
There’s a nice software synth on iOS called KQDixie which loads sysex files like Dexed does. KQD has features to load patches in layers or unison. I think the unison mode has a detune setting, but I just stumbled upon the non-single-patch mode yesterday 😁
Nice thing about the TX7 it responds as well as a DX7 to SysEx, and it’s not complicated (at least not for an FM synth). It’s pretty easy to make an editor for it. I did it with an Electra One, and you can fit that Electra One on top of a TX7 as well. They make a nice pair. Because the sysex works bidirectional, the Electra One shows you how the TX7 sound is constructed. A very good way to learn how to make sounds in FM. May I’ll need a second TX7 !
get the DX5 patches -- (they combine for example horn A horn B strings A strings B etc they are factory made to be used together - so with 2 dx7,s or a dx7/tx7 - load A on one and B on another and you have a DX5 combination -- i do this with my dx7 11fd in performance mode = 2 patches together stereo -- closest u will get to a dx5 without owning one ..
Now imagine what the TX816 (8 DX7like modules in a rack) would sound like. 😉Yamaha came up with sounds that spread over all of the modules, with each only producing a certain part of the combined sound. Much better than just layering the same sound. The famous FMepiano sounds massive on that one. Just a little bit of varied panorama and a bit of detuning and no chorus is needed. Just reverb maybe. Another synth that will never leave my studio.
@@synthfellow i think there is a video around in which somebody tried that. But somehow I prefer the hands-on thing with hardware. And the sound of the old converters. TX816's modules have balanced outputs, which helps with the normally weak levels of a DX7's outs.
TX7 has 32 memories for its Function parameters, plus another 32 which can be used for DX7 (which has only one such setting for all 32 patches). Both MIDI cables have to be connected to use this as TX7 sends SysEx data to DX7. Another great feature is range setting when TX7 plays only in limited range - up, down on the keyboard, or when the lowest point is set higher than the highest, there's a silenced range between them. Also possibility of program TX7 directly from DX7 should be mentioned.
I mean the TX7 is called an FM *expander* right?! But to be fair if you can't afford a DX or find one is good condition, the TX is very competent as a stand-alone synth too, especially given its age! I don't own either and likely never will, but do have a TX81z, as well as a Digitone and Opsix. Plus there is the Arturia DX7 plugin which is great and I'm just now experimenting with Tracktion F'em. Many paths to FM these days, it's really having a revival!
The TX7 is definitely a good choice! Tbh who owns a DX7 to program it? And most of us have a midikeyboard anyway. Arturias DX7 is great but somehow I prefer Dexed. ❤
I have the same upgrade my demos don’t play anymore? Do your demos play? I’m thinking maybe they got erased or either it doesn’t work with the upgrade?
Very boring meat and potatoes synth for the bedroom synth geek, but most useful for the gigging musician. With the DP4 this could be a studio-monster :) The Kurzveill K1000 and Peavey DPM3 / 4 were her cousins
It's not boring at all. it's a wavetable synth it's sound neat for its time kinda like a ppg wave. I've made really good sq-80 patches with more waveforms, but mines broke . I do fm synthesis now. You probably find fm synthesis boring, too, right? Limited gear can make you creative. Also, the esq was made by the same dude who made the commodore 64 sid chip.
I had one of these about 25 years ago. I can't even remember what I did with it 🤣 I don't recall selling it I think I gave it to a friend. Was good synth back in the day.
Okay so when I go to internal, all I get is a bunch of Brass1. Its in every setting 1-4. I did the factory reset like you said, but it still says Brass1 on all the internal setings. Cart A and Cart B have different sounds. Do I need the 3.2 upgrade to get sounds in my internal banks?
Yes you need to update the os. Mine is 3.52. But you can send the patches via sysex. Then you don’t need to upgrade. BUT if you do a factory reset or the battery dies your back to the Brass sounds and you’ll have to do the sysex thing again.
Thanks for giving the ESQ1 some love (I love mine). I've got the 3.50 ROM and I'd be interested to hear the extra waveforms accessible with the 3.53 ROM.
Very good. Thank you teacher for sharing the factory sounds of the synthesizer, Ensoniq esq1. Very good video, we will wait for more interesting videos about the beauty of synthesizers.❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you teacher, we would like you to show us the factory sounds that the Ensoniq ESQ-1 comes with. If you could share to hear what that synthesizer sounds like, I would be happiest in the world, please.
