I will say, I don’t find cucumber falls to be very photogenic. Maybe I haven’t found the sweet spot for it yet but never came away going “wow I love that waterfall” 😂 Probably best one I got was in January using that same tree (but further back and with the waterfall frozen. Also, for anyone planning to go, get to that waterfall first and as early as possible. It gets CRAZY crowded. Love Ohiopyle though, vistas, waterfalls, coffee shops now, fossils, wildlife. It has it all 😂

@JeffreyTadlockPhotography 15 часов назад
Ha! Yeah - I'm not sure why I've enjoyed that waterfall so much or felt like I have a few good pictures of it!! I'm normally the one that struggles with a decent composition endlessly! We did make it our first stop and luckily had it to ourselves for probably 45 minutes or so before the first people arrived (and promptly went down to play under the waterfall...) I definitely have more to explore in that area, I welcomed being able to spend a full weekend instead of passing through with only a few hours like I have on my previous times through. I need to work more on finding the vistas! We did Baughman Rock Overlook last year, it was okay - I probably needed better conditions to really make it sing though.

What's your overall impression after a year of using the X50 v2 over your old explore 35 v2? I'm looking at getting the smaller x40 v2 or the Explore 35 v2 to complement my X70 HD and I'm torn on which one would work best.
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography 2 дня назад
The bag itself (the X50) is a great bag, pretty much my standard carry for regional trips or when there is not going to be a flight involved. The Explore 35L is bag I carry for flying and it really is a pretty great size for that. Even with my video and audio gear, I can still fit everything I want/need to take. If I was to only have one bag, I feel like the 40L is the sweet spot. Small enough to fly with, but big enough for those cold weather days where you might want extra layers to either put on or store when you shed layers. Happy to answer any other questions - I don't think you can go too far wrong with either of the choices you are looking at.

@@timothymcdaniel7372 Glad you've liked the 28-400mm videos! It is a pretty great all-around, versatile lens. I just took it (and my 14-30mm) on an Arizona trip back in June. I had the Tamron 70-300mm and ended up selling it, the 28-400mm with its VR felt like a better all-around lens, with the bonus of some extra reach. It does hit that f/8 mark pretty quick, but for landscape photography I don't find that very problematic.

I definitely find that I learn the most from my "bad" photos and I find that when I go back and look through raw photos from an older shoot, my opinion about which is better has changed and I wonder why I never edited this photo or that. I like your attitude, there's no right or wrong answer, it's a personal choice. It's good to see someone else's thought process. I particularly appreciate your emphasis on separation of the feature you want to highlight. That one thought is easy to overlook when your view is the "whole world". Small details can be very interesting. Thanks for taking your time to share your thoughts. (I also like the other side of the river!)

I try to avoid any “one true way” approach to photography, it is such a creative endeavor that I feel like people should be free to explore and not be stuck with some sort of rules. I of course am happy to share my opinion on things, but not approach it as if my way is the right way, it is just one viewpoint. I agree that small details can be quite interesting! It has taken me quite sometime to start seeing them and even now, it takes some concentration and deliberate approach to find them! Can’t believe it took me so long to visit the other side of the river! Definitely my favorite side now! Thanks for watching!

Great video Jeff! Simply my opinion, but the last two images I thought were the best out of the group. I really liked the angle and contrast of the rock on the image prior to the last one of the edited group. I to think the separation of water and rock brought the last image out. Curious did you get a new tattoo on your left arm (talk about getting of subject lol)? Have a good one my friend and nice images.

Excellent video. I always like these videos where the photographer explains their thinking process. Even thought I am very experienced, I have learned a lot from this type of video. Your video is excellent and everyone can learn from it. Looking around your image at 17:10, I would have minimized the rock at the bottom. But, you took more photos and made it more into the scene which immediately stood out as the better image. This is an example of what we can learn from this type of video. Excellent! And thanks for sharing!

Thank you! I am glad you liked the video - I haven't done many videos of this type, talking through my why I choose one photo versus another, but it was fun! And glad it was helpful! I think what really made the difference on that image around 17:10 was that with the first composition it left a viewer wondering was including that rock at the bottom intentional or could I just not find a composition that didn't include it. Whereas that next one it was much more obvious I wanted to the rock in the composition, so the tension around that went away. Thanks for watching and the comment!

Hi! I've tried this and the bottleneck is always the ability to charge or at least power the iPad / SSD / card reader via a wall wart or equivalent. Many / most C hubs say 'does not support charging'. Have you found one that can power everything without killing the iPad battery? Cheers!
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography 11 дней назад
My on the road setup for photo backups is usually an iPad Pro connected to an USB-C Hub and then card readers and external SSD drive. That hasn't seemed to kill the battery, but I'm usually making the backups and then disconnecting the hub, readers, and such. Backups for me usually include still images and video from multiple cameras. Not sure that helps! But happy to answer more questions!

My camping setup in my younger days was *way* more simple! It is almost embarrassing how much stuff I have with me now! Starting to sleep in the car was a big difference, pretty predictable environment there which helps a lot. And that Exped MegaMat as a sleeping pad is very comfortable. It is too big to hike with, but great for car camping - either in the car or in a tent at a car camping site.

I glad you made this video., great information. So the roof holds your weight? I’ve been thinking about a roof set setup for my car but I weigh more than you do. How do stay warm in fall and winter temperatures?
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography 12 дней назад
Glad it was helpful! All my weight goes on the roof back, which puts the weight on the more structural part of the car roof. If I stand on just one of the cross rails of the roof rack, they are just a little flexy - I think they are only rated to 150lbs. But with the adapt plate I have up there at the rear cornder, my thought is that distributes the weight across two rails, helping me feel more safe up there. So anytime I go up their to stand, I always go from the ladder to the adapt plate - the setup seems pretty solid so far.
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography 12 дней назад
Ooops - Almost forgot the temperature question. For fall and winter the window shades help keep things a little warmer by adding some insulating properties to the windows. And then I switch to a sleeping bag for colder weather, and still bring the sleeping quilt with me for extra warmth. It never gets too bad in there - though the coldest temps I've been in there were probably in the mid to upper 20's?

Hey Jeffrey, quick question. On the bag with the large core unit, how much room do you still have with the Roll Top? Im trying to decide on the Explore 35 or the X40-50 and I know the 35 maxes out pretty much with the large, but I can't seem to find anyone mention how the large core affects the room in the roll top compartment. Thanks!
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography 13 дней назад
I took a couple of pictures this morning - this is of my X50, from the top, with the rolltop unrolled. One image has a 30oz HydroFlask standing up in it for context, and the bag as the large core unit in it. Here's a Google Drive link with the two images: drive.google.com/drive/u/1/folders/1CUyFQjvhRZMvr4xApAk65H_uKJo-O970 I tend to use the 35L with the Medium DSLR core unit and find that a really good fit. I feel more constrained if I use the large core unit in that bag. Though I have not used the X40 bag, I feel like it might be the perfect bag size, just a touch bigger than the 35L without becoming troublesome when flying, and not quite as big as the X50 (which feels like a big bag to me). But I haven't had a chance to use one to say that with 100% confidence. Happy to answer any questions!
