Great tips. I have to admit to having quite the collection of silica packets, along with children that insist on giving me more anytime they find some. I think I'm good for now.

They are handy to have! I have my family pretty well trained to keep them around for me as well!

Nice video and excellent advice. I have a couple of comments. Seeking shelter under a tree is fine if there isn't any lightning. If there is lightning, you should never shelter under a tree as they tend to attract lightning. Also, the biggest reason not to attach the umbrella to the tripod is that if a gust of wind comes along it could easily send your camera and tripod tumbling to the ground.

Thank you! Definitely agreed that thunderstorms are a whole different game! And yeah, umbrellas certainly act like sails, I never really understood why attaching one to a tripod would be a good idea. Thanks for watching!

All great suggestions though, having only two hands, I find maneuvering an umbrella, camera, and tripod next to impossible. (My wife was kind enough to carry mine during a rainy shoot at the Biltmore House gardens.) I also carry large plastic bags like the ones Bed, Bath & Beyond used to give out. They are easy to drop over nearly any camera/lens and can be lifted up while still protecting the camera.

It can be a bit like juggling! Plastic sleeves are my favorite - lightweight, pack down small, and functional.

Did you have the Think Tank Hydrophobia or their Emergency Rain Cover? I never used the more expensive hydrophobia but I own all three sizes of their emergency rain cover. At least for me they set up quickly, are cheap and keeps my gear dry. I've shot several soccer games in crazy rain with them as well as numerous landscape trips. I agree with the other options you gave. Don't always have to spend a ton of money to keep your gear dry. It is good to remind people that they can still get out if the weather isn't perfect.

I think it was the emergency rain cover. I may have been using the wrong size of cover with my gear at the time, it just always felt more cumbersome than one of the clear rain sleeves. I almost mentioned that if you were photographing sports in the rain, where you were out for a long time, that the ThinkTank cover would probably be best for that. ThinkTank makes great products, for some reason I just didn't like the rain cover much.

good stuff. funny how I went through the exact same thought process about an umbrella causing tripod shake as you were discussing it. wonder if anyone makes a mount where you can snap it on while composing a shot with both hands, and quickly take it off to hold while taking the image? if not...business opportunity...? 😏

I don't even like a strap on my camera when on a tripod in case is causes shake from wind, I can't imagine something like an umbrella! Something quick release could be cool though. Attach, have both hands to mount the camera or maybe a lens change under shelter, and then unclick while actually photographing!

Just upgraded my GX-85 to the OM-5 which is highly weather proofed.

Weather sealing takes a little bit of the stress off! Enjoy the upgrade as well!

OM-5 is an under appreciated camera. Great unit, many features. Beautiful images. 🎉🎉🎉

@@petermcginty3636 I think several of the M43 cameras, OM, Panasonic, etc are still ahead of the big three in their use of software in the cameras. Really makes the M43 quite the powerhouse in a small package. Definitely under appreciated.
