It's not only the engine and the suspension but it is also the weight distribution. This was the key factor why Keichi Tsuchiya likes this car's light weight, balanced weight and old school rear wheel drive.
The first I knew of these cars was in the mid 80s when someone did a one off with the 2.2l turbo motor out of a Shelby Charger - and painted it in Santa Fe Blue and Silver. Never saw one in real life here in the States until years later. Neat little car - and, as others have mentioned, reminded me of a Fiero, but with better lines.
Fast forward to the mid 90s? Oi, dickhead, i engineered the Michael Shield and Steve Palmer 6R4s. Sadly Michael joined Steve on Thursday. Learn your motorsport history and show some respect to the RX 6R4 LEGENDS.
One of my all-time favourites, the P6 3500. The P6 shape still looks sharp 60 years on and with that engine, pure class (with a minor hooligan element)!
I can tell you why the (Met I think) order was cancelled. The mk1-2 Mondeo was too fragile for use as a police car. Soft wheels, suspension, the head gaskets on the 2.5 aren't up to service work either. The brake discs aren't very good quality and the bumpers & bodywork are too soft.
Whilst I liked these cars as a Kid, the description as a perceived British version of a Mustang is completely wrong. Rover was the Bank manager car, When small town bank managers were a big deal, if regarded as a bit pompous more Captain Mainwaring than Steve McQueen. Although admired (the Queen had a P5) Rovers were never, ever cool. They Kinda should have been, given the V8 had good power and way more cylinders than anything else, also Rover couldn't have got much less power from the engine, it was so undertuneed. The real kicker though was the shape, in a time when aerodynamics, collision performance were an undiscovered country , it had real flair, similar to the Citroen DS in some respects, a proper individual, I dont think Rover execs quite knew what they had in the P6. Maybe if they had a 4L GT version with Webbers and a suspension, Rover might have shaken it's stolid, conservative and Conservative gentlemanly image that dogged it forever.
Super cool video!! I have been assembling a machine shop to support my RU-vid channel that I will be starting with the build of a 1928 Morgan RIP GN special 3 wheeler with 4 wheels. I am using an experimental aircraft opposed twin supercharged engine. This will be mated to an MG 4 speed manual gearbox with a 2 piece hand cast aluminum adapter. This will be connected to an MG differential with beautiful wire wheels. The frame I stood over steel and will have aircraft cloth stretched over and sprayed with plasticizer. This will have a boat tail look and is essentially a 20's airplane without a propeller or wings. There is only one other in existence and Charlie Martin races it in the UK. The next project lined up is the building of a Brooklands style cycle car similar to the Pembleton. This will have a BMW R-100 engine in the front and four wheels with gorgeous leather interior and even space for luggage. I look forward to seeing everyone over at the channel when it gets warm out enough to be in the barn in Pennsylvania .....
They were killed off by a change in the way cars were taxed as they became too expensive compared to their competitors. I had a lime green one for several years back in the day, chassis number 131. It was quite unusual as it did not have a sunroof. LJK Setright the renowned motoring journalist wrote a great article about the Clan after testing one. He spent a lot of time on the industrial estate in Washington enjoying the Clan’s handling on the big but virtually unused roundabouts there. The whole report was written in Geordie. I’m sure it was for Car magazine. I would love to read it again. He said that the Clan was the best handling car that he had ever driven in the wet.
My first car was a Poseidon Blue 2001 VTR. I loved that car more than anything. Unfortunately wrote it off going too fast round a corner lifting off 😩. Replaced it with 2 more VTRs, then hit the big league and finally could insure an Icelandic Blue VTS. Which I ruined by lowering too much 😔. Replaced that by a Xsara VTS, that was miles faster and super comfy. Unfortunately it looked horrific and sold it for a Racing Blue 5:51 Clio 182. Ahhh to be 22 again 😢😢
Clan was clever good looking but deeply underdeveloped. The self assembly tax loop hole long predated 1973 and VAT. The first production fibreglass monocoque that was the Lotus Elite. The Johnny Blades car wasn't properly sorted intil Kenny Allen bought it. Imp engine wasn't a Coventry Climax design it was a Rootes design inspired by the Coventry Climax FWM but there are a huge number of fundamental differences.
I think Berkely was close as well and had a motorcycle engine. The Lotus Elite was originally penned in 1956, the Rochdale Olympic was 3rd. **Oct 1956 - Jan 1957 for the Berkely so this was production which then would be first.
One has to admire the effort and the quality of the build. But the wheel selection, not so much. Far too large for the body mass of the car - they make it look silly and like it's running on tiptoes.
??? Lotus Elite was a composite monocoque production car launched in 1957....earlier than the Clan. Davrian also, though it too took the self assembly route due to Vat.

I see you videos are not reaching enough audience and ther fore less views, I would suggest you to get in touch in a SEO specialist fot RU-vid, to reach a bigger audience. Please do not take my comment in a wrong way. I said this because i see you commitment to put out car content even though the view less for lot of videos and i hope my suggestion helps. Mega impressive. A fantastic build. I'm surprised it is allowed to keep its original identity (M reg Crusader, etc) and have the requisite number of 'points' having been re-shelled and re-'engined', etc.
Yes, very Triggers Broom! To me it's a beautiful Irish Clan! Nice to see a Leaf motor repurposed - have had a 24kwh Leaf for the past 6 years and have been amazed by it.
