Outdoor Omnivore . . . Great to see you out hunting again. Darned GoPro overheating . . . would have loved to see how you harvested those Toms. Never hunted turkey before but the way you prepared and smoked the smaller whole bird, it looked delish 😋 as confirmed by your older son. I guess the younger son preferred the wild turkey with the right sauce. Out of curiosity, was the first sauce an olive oil based sauce . . . would love to know how it was prepared. Also, is the breast meat quite different than the leg and thigh meat as in a store bought turkey. I also would have thought the drumstick and thigh would possibly be on the tougher side but glad to know it was better than expected 👍. Another enjoyed video and thanks for sharing your hunt and meal 🤙.
Glad you enjoyed it! The first sauce was simply some extra olive oil with the bird seasoning (salt, pepper, Penzy's Revolution) and drippings from the platter after the bird rested. Light and dark meat on the wild turkeys are very different just like a store bought turkey -- usually the dark meat is a lot tougher on older wild birds because they run around so much in the wild. For this reason I usually break the birds down in parts and cook them separately, usually slow cooking the dark meat and brining and smoking the breast as deli meat. I was surprised the young bird turned out so well whole...And one of these days I'm going to get a decoying Tom on video!
Outdoor Omnivore . . . Elderflower pancakes and accompaniments look scrumptious 😋! Glad to see your boys' "thumbs up" 👍 approvals . . . SWEET! Looking forward to your next family outing and see what other natural ingredient(s) your family will collect and see how it is (they're) integrated into another AWESOME meal 🤙.
Outdoor Omnivore . . . Really enjoy your interaction with your boys. Jack (I believe the younger son) is developing some knife skills . . . he'll soon be blazing through an onion to get it diced 👍. Was surprised Michael (I believe the older son) didn't like the ham . . . maybe it wasn't gamy enough like dove or duck 😂. The omelette looked good, though the eggs were a tad bit brown for my preference . . . OK, I'm being "high maintenance". Trust me, I would have eaten it had you served it to me. Another enjoyed video and "Thanks" for sharing your family's experiences with us viewers and another cooking tutorial 🤙. . . your meals look AWESOME 😋😋😋!
Glad you enjoyed another one. I agree about the eggs. The cast iron was a little heavy duty so retained too much heat for cooking the eggs too fast. Maybe 3 eggs would have been better for less thick of an omelette to cook through....always something to adjust the next time!
Glad it was helpful! They also have bioluminescence and glow in the dark but usually easy to tell because they're growing in stacked clumps on wood. Important to distinguish because they can cause bad abdominal cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, weakness, sweating -- and occasional liver injury. Happy hunting!
Outdoor Omnivore . . . Wonderful outing with the family harvesting Chanterelles 👍. As with all of your other dishes, that Chnterelle Gnocchi looked AWESOME 😋 . . . especially with all that butter. Well, if the dish wasn't to your boys' liking, more for you, the wife, and sister / cousin / niece / friend to enjoy 😜. Again, another enjoyed vid and looking forward for your next one 🤙.
Outdoor Omnivore . . . I've learned to look forward to your vids Sir 🤙and another enjoyed vid 👍. Some nice shootin' and loved that double during the retrieve (I'm assuming it was your double, but your hunting buddy may have contributed). As always, your Iron Chef component of the vid was equally enjoyed; your dishes look AWESOME 😋 and will attempt them. Loved that you learned from your folks and grandparents and am hoping they're able to appreciate your cooking and see the results of their lessons. I'm sure your boys will say the same when they're older and get asked about their culinary skills . . . "My / Our POPs taught us how to cook 😄". Was glad to see your older son do the "Happy Dance" approving your Duck Confit . . . he's back on board 😜. Again, another enjoyed vid, and "Thanks" for brining us along on your hunt and sharing with us the wonderful preparation of your bounty 👏.
Outdoor Omnivore . . . Great to see the family on a "shroom" foraging outing and those fried "shrooms" looked AWESOME 😋. Love "shrooms" of all types. You're older son has definitey been a part of the "Tough Crowd" crew lately 😂 . . . historically, he's loved (two thumbs up 👍👍) your dishes. He may be destined to be food critic. Well, more for your younger son, wife, and you to eat 😜. "Thanks" for bringing us along on your family adventure and another enjoyed vid Sir 🤙.
Great video, and beautiful pond. Can you share where you were hunting? Private or public land? It doesn’t look like one of the refuges. Just curious of the general area. Thanks for sharing the awesome video!
Outdoor Omnivore . . . Late to the game but still another enjoyable video Sir! Loved the hunting, loved the time with your boys, and loved the meal . . . as always, looked DELISH 😋.
Outdoor Omnivore . . . Another enjoyed vid Sir 🤙and glad you had a good shoot. My late season dove hunt was BAD . . . one bird; saw eight but the only one harvested was the only one in shooting range; it made for a good appetizer 🤣. When I scouted my area (Northern CA) I knew the shooting wouldn't be great as it had cooled off quite a bit but was hoping to get some resident birds; I assumed the migratory birds had left for warmer weather. Still was good to get out in nature though. Love the fact your boys aren't picky; they're willing to eat the organs, and love how you interact with the one son 👍. I believe your son is a future "Iron Chef" in the making 😀. Looking forward to a vid when your boys are out hunting with you and they can start off as the "bird dog" . . . that's how I started off with Moms and Pops 😅. "Thanks" for another enjoyed vid, bringing us along with your hunt, and for showing the viewers yet another way to prepare doves 🤙; the meal looked DELISH 😋. Happy Holidays to you and your family and all of you have a SAFE and WONDERFUL 2024.
Outdoor Omnivore . . . Good Grief, I'm binge watching your channel 😂; really enjoy your content 👍. WOW, you have a really good memory for spotting your downed birds; I'm sure some tenacious retrieving was involved too. That meal looked AWESOME. Love polenta, broccolini, and doves, and that deer sausage ragu looked DELISH 😋! Thanks for sharing your hunting exploits and cooking with your family 🤙.
Outdoor Omnivore . . . Just came from your 2023 Duck Opener vid. Nice shooting 🤙and Good Grief, you're one heck of a bird dog 👍! Not sure how long you spent retrieving your birds but I'm sure it took some time. You're brave attempting doubles in that cover 😳. . . something I only attempt if I'm hunting some pretty open ground (i.e. very little ground cover); I'm my own bird dog as well 🤪. I learned the hard way really soon, early in my dove hunting career, after shooting a couple of doubles and not being able find either birds. Love your grill session and loved to see your boys eat some dove hearts. For my whole birds, I completely remove the gullet before cooking; not sure if that is where the seeds came from though. I'll be heading back out 11/11 for the second CA dove season. If you're heading out for the second CA dove season, hoping you'll have another good shoot and feast 👊!
Thanks! Yea it was amateur hour taking some of those doubles but I couldn't resist a few times because the shots were so good. Much better to shoot one at a time. I washed all the gullets out pretty good but maybe I should just remove them like you say because they were chock full of seeds. Thanks for the tip!
Outdoor Omnivore . . . The meal looked AWESOME 😋and you grilled those duck breasts perfectly🤙! Really glad to see you utilize the whole duck (i.e. wings, thighs, and drums in addition to the breasts). So many times I see hunters only cut off the breast meat and discard the rest . . . blows my mind 🤯 how wasteful folks can be. Have you ever tried eating the hearts? Thanks for sharing your hunt and hoping you'll have a FUN and successful 2023 duck season 👊!
Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, the hearts are awesome. And the scraps of fat render for great for flavoring potatoes. I don't eat too much other organ meat due to concerns of toxins e.g. selenium in the central valley.
Trial by fire ... just kidding. No, we'd tried about 15 outtakes the proper way but struggled due to a slight cross wind so made an exception to the rule this once. Thanks for looking out!
Sir this is beautiful! Love to see families gardening together. Teaching your children great values. Your tomatoes are flawless & your helpers are cute. Keep on gardening! 🪴
wildlife.ca.gov/Hunting/Waterfowl Here are California's regulations, but you can shoot 7 of either sex for blue wings in CA. Those are cinnamon in the video, though.
