Spice and Wolf had a 2nd season come out this year. If you like fantasy, romance, and mature writing, it is a slow paced story that actually has some really engaging and cleverly complex conflicts each arc.

Another awesome video, thank you for sharing all these great animes with us. I am seriously considering going from Hulu to Crunchyroll, the options are so great on the latter service. I watch musicals from time to time, a video about them would be pretty cool I think.

I've still got songs from the musical episode of Buffy stuck in my head and it must be 20 years or more since it aired! 😂 Also love My Fair Lady. Some great Anime recommendations, I really enjoyed Frieren recently and am currently doing a fourth rewatch of Attack on Titan.

I cant stand musicals lol, whenever they break into song I cringe. I loved Solo Leveling and read the series, there is a new series out written by a new author since the original author died. Kaiju No 8 was great also loved it. Wrong Way to use healing Magic was decent not my favorite but I watched the whole thing and read it. I dropped how to love your elf bride because I forgot about it. I have never heard of sleepy princess so I may check it out.

You should read some of Charles De Lint books. He is more subtle than most of which you listed. His books tend to short and are a joy to read. Try Crow Girls or The Little Country or Dreams Underfoot or Some Place to be Flying.

I dropped the STephen Donaldson series (last chronicles of Thomas the Unbeliever) as well as The Sword of Truth series (after around book 14 I also stopped reading about Drizzt about 25 books in (I'm not exaggerating some series go on too long! I like David Eddings doing an entire saga in ONE BOOK (although he was a child abuser and I am no longer a Eddings fan! Eddings did 2 books after the Belgariad and Mallorean that pushed it! Belgarath the Sorcerer was ok, but Polgara I never warmed to!

Mab is a fey. She acts true to the nature of her species and operates within a different moral framework typical of her species. I don’t see things as good or evil but in the context of the question, the answer must be that Marcone is more evil.

Surprised there's no discussion of their Sovereign Stones series. The word felt pretty interesting even if the countries that populated it were a bit boilerplate in design. The twist going from book one to two was also unexpected to read.

Its fascinating to go back to the keystones of modern fantasy (this book helped make the whole Dragon Rider thing) and see how unique they still are despite being trend setters. It's like how LotR still stands out despite being copied to death

That last one happens a lot with Shannara for me. I've enjoyed the first trilogy and its prequel. I started the next saga of 4 books. However, a few chapters in I realized I wasn't in the mood, and I was going to have a skewed opinion if I kept going. Dropped the book, waited a year, and then went back and truly enjoyed them. I failed to do that with another series. I bought the set before I knew if I would like it. That was the Inheritance Cycle. I forced myself through the series all back to back. To this day, I can't decide if I liked that series or not because I kept making myself read when I wasn't in the mood.

I used to have a hard time dropping a book, but over time I came to realize what you said in this video: There are a lot of books out there, so why force myself to read one I don't like, For me DNFing has become really simple. I usually am reading 2-4 books at any one time and the ones that get dropped are the ones that sit there for a little while untouched. Recently, I was on my kindle menu and noticed a book I hadn't touched in so long I forgot I was even reading it. So....dropped it right there.

I don’t think Mab is evil, I think she’s cruel. She moves according to her nature, because she is a force. She balances the fae courts and most importantly, doesn’t have free will. Marcone on the other hand, is a human with free will. His actions knowingly harm many people for his own profit and power. For me it’s pretty cut and dry.

I love the logic and truth in this video about reading goals. So, why am I 🤣? Because I don't make reading goals. None. So being here is redundant but I was curious. I like what I read. I want to discover one that makes me happy and ones that I soooo love and hype and made a deal with a friend [to read her favorite so she will read mine]. Yes booktube make preasure in a sense "to be real reader you need to read..." kind of feeling and for booktuber I believe it makes even more preasure because of having-a-book-channel. The presure I have is finding always 2-3 new book or some new high fantasy titels that I wonder when will I reach them. So for now I have a box of TBR book-cover-printed-pictures as a reminder for when I don't know what I want to read next [like I still haven't read Sanderson...]

I was guessing you would choose Laurana. I think she is under appreciated and deserves more recognition for her story arc and growth as a person. When the original DL trilogy was written back in the 80s it really wasn’t all that common to have female characters be so complex and experience that much growth. Superficially she can be mistaken for the stereotypical “beautiful elf princess” that mostly exists as a personification of the male hero’s ultimate prize. However she is not a superficial character at all but arguably the character that experiences the most personal growth in all of DL. She starts out spoiled, naive and with very little agency (and the agency she does have she uses to chase a man) but she grows, learns, starts to see the world beyond herself, she gradually starts taking more and more responsibility, overcoming her fears and learning to be brave, to fight for others while also maturing in her understanding of what love is. She doesn’t discard her love for Tanis but rather she becomes more mature, more reflected and nuanced. She ends up breaking down gender barriers - not because it is her right as a princess, not because she is so beautiful that the knights can’t help but to accept her into their organization, but rather because she proves herself, her courage and her competence. She defies her father, she defies tradition when it is backwards and u productive, she takes action and she fights for what she believes in; ultimately becoming the Golden General and being one of the main reasons that good prevails in the war of the lance. I think that is pretty darn progressive for any story written in the 1980s and even more so for a fantasy story.

100% agree! Laurana is amazing! My all-time favorite fictional character. I particularly love the duality in her in how she becomes such a fierce and capable warrior while still being so loving and compassionate. She really was everything a hero should be.

I did think of a personal question if you don't mind. I started reading the original Dragonlance Chronicles with my 11 year old son for his first time. He does not like reading so we are doing so together and alternating reading pages to each other. It's going well so far - he seems to be enjoying it, which is exciting as it's MY all time favorite book. However, I'm nervous how to approach the few riske sections of the book such as Gilthanas and Silvara (if you remember). As you read the book at a young age, if I recall, i was curious if you felt the age level was appropriate or, if not, how to handle those sections. Thanks!
@FantasyFictionFanatics
@FantasyFictionFanatics Месяц назад
This is probably going to be a very long answer that all boils down to you will have to judge the age appropriateness for yourself based on what you feel is right and based on how mature you think your son is. Hopefully my overall thoughts will help you in making that decision. It has been several years now since I read the first three books (last time I read them was for the videos on the channel), so I might not remember the details of the riske parts as well as I think. Correct me if I'm wrong, but based on what I remember, the scenes do have some details, but not enough to be super graphic or overly mature. So, I do think that a younger reader could be okay reading it depending on the maturity of the child. I know my parents read these books to me when I was 12 or 13, so I was in middle school. They didn't skip these scenes for me and had no problems with me rereading the series again right after they finished reading it to me. I do know, in general, my parents have always considered me an older soul, so they obviously thought I was mature enough to read those portions. My advice to you is to reread the scene before you two get to it and then consider some of these questions: do you think this is content (in the manner it is written) that you feel comfortable, as a parent, exposing to your son? Also, do you think your son is mature enough, or old enough, to handle the topic in a more serious fashion? Lastly, are you comfortable with answering questions if your son asks them or doesn't understand what is happening? If you decide you don't think it is appropriate for him to read those portions of the book, then I think you should be honest with your son and explain why you are skipping those pages of the story. One thing I always really appreciated about my parents is how they always explained to me why they made decisions or told me no about something. They were always honest and open about all decisions. And, that is how I would handle it with my child. This is a very long response, and I'm not sure if it is very helpful. LOL I hope that it at least helps a little. I feel this is the kind of question that doesn't have a straight yes or no answer since every child is different and every parent has to follow their own priorities and principles.
