Hi, I'm Markus. Join me for an epic journey around the earth without ever using a motor.
On July 13th, 2015 I got in a canoe and started paddling from Toronto, Canada. I have since trimaraned, hand-cycled, pogo-sticked, tricycled, skied, rafted, kayaked, and SUPed my way across Canada, then rowed to the U.S.A., bicycled the west coast to San Francisco, sailed across the Pacific Ocean, cycled and paddled across Southeast Asia and into Nepal...to be continued on this vlog. In over five years I have never used a single form of motorized transportation. Join me behind the scenes at www.patreon.com/Routesofchange Thank you for being with me.
Kudos on everything Dale; the voyage, the video …everything. Well done! As I watched and imagined myself in your position, I think I would have been constantly fretting over the autopilot. Losing it would have been a disaster. Did you have a backup plan? Again, congratulations and many thanks for sharing your adventure.
Thanks. My name is Markus. Dave is my friend and the captain. There was no autopilot. It’s a manual windvane. Much more reliable than an autopilot, but also wouldn’t have been a disaster. Two of us on board to take shifts and a boat that balances well and likely would have worked with a sheet to tiller setup. Thanks!
Because sharks and orcas are quite intelligent and don’t look at humans as prey. Zero fatal attacks by Orcas in the wild. Most shark attacks are accidental and happen in water with low visibility or where they are known to feed. I’d be way more afraid of some numbnut human who is texting while driving….
Are their great white sharks in the area of the Golden Gate Bridge? I remember seeing a video from an Alcatraz tourist boat of a seal being eaten by something huge.
Golden Staff man!!! Least you know for next time. I had this infection in a country not far from the Marshall islands, Kiribati. Hit me up if you want to practice that Auzzy accent too :p
I'd jump in there with you. So many people in the comments acting like this is so dangerous is funny to me. I get that there is some risk and that not everyone is a confident swimmer. I would need a ladder though, I'm not s fit as you : )
Thanks for letting me know. I'm on pause for now while I work on a book and film. Have you watched all of the videos!? There's likely a few you've missed. :) You can join the crew on Patreon to hear more of what I'm up to if you like. Thanks
This video is just man, boat, sky, sunlight, ocean. I can't picture other videos with fewer things in them (apart from maybe a padded room or a pitch black area).
Nah bro my thalassophobia is kicking in I’m even scared to swim in a 30 feet lake cause I couldn’t see the bottom you never know what’s lurking underneath
Great series of videos. But frankly you scare me. You need to take an Inflatable Lifejacket serious. keeping it attached all the time . unless its dead calm and the boat is not moving. could you imagine a rouge wave catching you unprepared and pitching you over the side.
I’ve experienced rogue waves on the ocean before and quite frankly I’m glad I was not attached or wearing a life jacket. I feel more able and secure being free to move without the possible restraint of a life jacket. I may not be an expert sailor but I am confident in my ability to stay on board. Some sailors are more comfortable on the dock or on a couch. Many round the world sailors are retired alcoholics in their 60’s and 70’s. I’ve got a leg and a peg up on many of em! I can imagine a world of endless possibilities and it does not scare me. 🤘
I learned to sail as a child from my dad on simple small boats and watching him sail a very similar boat to this, but most was learned from my friend, the boat, and the ocean on this sail.
The alberg 30 is such an amazing boat. So many owners say great things about them traveling the world. Triteia got his alberg for 2400 dollars and refit over years now he has sailed thousands of miles
What month did you leave for Hawaii? The Pacific is usually calm. I want a Cape Horn, the Canaduan man who designed it was an extremely interesting man. He sailed naked to avoid "boat butt". People don't talk about what happens to the skin and body in general when we are out at sea for extended tines. Being crusted in salt all the time is a challenge. Carrying enough freshvwater is also a challenge. But I prefer being on the ocean everyday.
We left at the start of May. I never found the salt to be too much of a problem but I have experienced some of the worst boat butt while rowing on the ocean...
how did you determine the course that you did? It is very unusual from all the circumnavigations I have seen / read. I was really entranced with your destinations.
Wowww so beautiful and majestic 💫💫✨, it's just Hollywood that makes the ocean scary looks scary, putting fake big hungry sharks, and monsters now I'm 26 old and still have the thoughts that if I jumped like he did, a shark would come right after me lol, in fact, it's really inspiring and nerve calming observing this ocean
