California wines historically have been more expensive than European wines because land is more expensive here. Plus, many vineyards in Europe are generations old so they’ve been paid off for a long time. The younger generations are drinking less, and they are for sure drinking less wine too.

I see the main issue as vastly reduced wine consumption in restaurants. When presented with a charge of $15 for a single glass of wine, I’ll just think “no it’s not worth it.” I suspect many many restaurant goers react the same way. And today I just saw a CA champagne I used to buy for &13.99 is now $21.99. Sorry I’ll buy a $9 Prosecco instead.
