When the water clarity allows it, I attempt to capture underwater footage of the inshore species in my area. It's amazing how much can be learned from underwater footage while fishing and I hope to continue to improve the quality of the footage over time.

Hey Paul, thank you and its very cool to hear from a non-angler that clicked on my video. Recently, about 1-2 years ago, NY state implemented a slot size requirement to keep striped bass meaning it has to be within 28"-31" in order to keep it and you can only keep one. So this fish was actually too big to keep legally. But even in the years prior to this law I never really kept big ones since they are breeders and they don't taste as good as the smaller fish.
I noticed at 21:00 the motor kicked up when running in reverse. So it is possible to leave the motor unlocked? My concern is the motor being able to kick up when hitting an obstruction. There are many oyster bars where I fish. If I mount a motor on the bow or in a slot in front of the seat it can’t flip up and will be damaged.
thats a good question. I guess in theory if you only had the motor running in the forward position it could be unlocked and still work...I dont think i would recommend that though but yeah I think it could work. best practice is just stowe the motor in shallow water, even if it can flip up likely an impact would damage the prop

@@horatiomarchese3980 bleed and ice as soon as possible is the best way to keep the meat I’ve found. The stringer just makes it easier for them to bleed out, 5 min later they go in cooler

The reel is a stradic ci4+ which was discontinued and now replaced with shimano vanford. I just added a gomexus power knob to it. Rod is st. croix tidemaster inshore 6'-6" med-heavy fast
@@Sideshow42088 I think that’s a good practice as most places have sharks. The area I’m fishing though is in a protected sound where sharks are very uncommon.

Awesome video theres 2 water snake motors, finding the kayak one seems to be difficult. If I was to get the other one then Im forced to use the tiller the whole time right? I like the idea of hooking it up and using my kayak steering.

Hey Peter, another enjoyable video. My usual go to dependable hot spot for Seabass on structure almost nobody knows about has instead been loaded with….sharks. Caught 8 on one trip which is the most on a single trip. There must have been 80 I didn’t catch. Not sure what’s going on but it’s interesting to see you catch a keeper in 17 feet of water. I’m guessing he was hiding from the sharks 😂. I will definitely go shallower next trip out. Greetings from Gio Western Long Island Sound.
Hey Gio, were you using clam at that spot? I was on a party boat in montauk once going for seabass and everyone on the boat was using clam except my friend and I were using asian crabs. (this was in the summer). Everyone and I mean everyone was catching dogfish on the boat except my friend and I who were actually getting seabass...but idk maybe your scenario is different. LOL this has been a slow seabass season in the sound for me, my western sound areas dont have many around still...
Peter ! Remember Jaws? "I'm talking about SHARK'IN. I'm not talking about a dogfish !" Which sparked me to look up the dogfish. I did not know that dogfish have teeth that are so blunt that they're harmless. I saw a clip of a guy putting his finger in it's mouth. Some have venomous spines on their dorsal fins. The spiny have and smooth don't. They are considered EXCELLENT table fare. Maybe the wife is gonna be angry if she sees this clip. Also.... I know it's weird that I looked up N.Y. saltwater fishing regulations.... But.... Who is making these regs? Before August 1st, fluke 19" and after it's 19.5"? Can they really be technically accurate enough to know that it's necessary to increase the limit by 1/2" mid-season? It feels much more like ..... haha Francus you are the man, love that you research a lot about other fisheries. Your absolutely correct dogfish don't really have teeth, its kind of like a 80grit sandpaper but the spiny ones you do have to watch that tail. This one was a smooth so relatively safe to handle, they just are so strong its amazing. And yes they do taste great, just takes a bit more prep and care but they I def do want to keep one on the next opportunity, haha she hasn't had it yet 🤫 Yeah the regs don't make much sense. Its gotta be some sort of equation that projects an expected harvest amount of fish by mass. There were actually a number of options for fluke this year, I think the other options included shortening the season but allowing a smaller fish size or larger creel limit, etc. They eventually decided on this strange larger size keeper halfway through the season lol. Your prob right they just wanna look like theyr being creative over there in Albany

Recreational fishing has ZERO impact on saltwater fishing. It is not a lake. There's more fluke than seagulls. Same for porgies, robin, bluefish, and striper. Okay. I'm SORRY. No more complaining.... I PROMISE.
I'm with you man, the more I fish the more I think we rec guys are drops in the bucket, especially over soft bottom areas that can be dragged. Maybe certain non-migratory fish in snaggy bottoms are more pressured by rec guys/for hire boats but thats a small sample set
@PeterRanieriII Way to go, PETER ! Now you got me breaking my PROMISE... Think about the Florida Everglades... It has 10,000 mangrove islands. 99.9% never see a human. Every single bridge, dock, rock, reef, mangrove island, etc, is holding hundreds of mangrove snappers. Redfish? They are so heavily protected (one per person).... It is my belief. Redfish eat more undersized sea trout than all trout caught by humans. We aren't protecting fish. We're just shifting the fish protection from one fish to a different fish. Nobody.... and I mean NOBODY.... wants fishing regulations more than the fishermen. But.... we want them to be based on sound science. Supposedly ..... In the late 80's, redfish were over fished.... That was done by commercial fishing. Since then, they've made a complete comeback with no chance of depletion ever happening again because commercial targeting of redfish has been haulted. But.... The stranglehold on recreational fishermen continues..... based on what I believe to be, obsolete science. I wish good people could change the bad parts of the world. But.... This is the world we live in, and it's so much better in many ways that I TRY not to complain
Good to know man, I think next year if the sand eel run happens again I'll do my best to get to these areas earlier. As you know this area is massive so it would surprise me though if all the keepers got picked through, Im starting to think that maybe since the sand eels left, the bigger fish also moved on because they have a bigger need to feed and there wasnt a whole lot of bait over there?
I've put a hook right on the same snap swivel with my sinker and have caught fluke. When you think about it, it's pretty much the same as a bucktail. Glad you had some fun out there
Awesome video so a 100 ah battery at full speed would last ruffly 5.8hrs? Thats pretty good considering im really only going to be using it half the time going back to start the drift over
@@waterboy5164 that’s correct 👍 if you weigh down the kayak with a bunch of gear you may draw a little more amps but you still would easily get 5hrs on high. That’s what I’m saying man, this little motor rocks!

I would use a 30amp breaker: amzn.to/3LNmmly watersnake recommends 25amp but those could be tough to find. for the 100ah battery just buy the cheapest one on amazon as they essentially are all sourced from china (even the expensive US based companies like ampedoutdoors, etc. source the cells from china) Heres a link to one I found: amzn.to/3WkBdca you dont have to buy that one but if you buy anything from that linked page it will help me out 👍
@@waterboy5164 I like Berkeley x9 the best right now and power pro super slick 8 would be my 2nd favorite. In general I like the smooth feeling braids not just for casting but the sound is greatly reduced through the guides. On my underwater camera I have like a 40lb heavy duty 4 strand braid and I can hear the braid rubbing the guides at the bait. Not sure if it spooks fish but I’d rather be as silent as possible

love this idea! I researched the auto boat adapter before doing this, it had just came out. But i figured at $650 + $250 for the trolling motor and then building a custom mount for the motor would bring me into about $1000-$1200 and there just wasnt enough data out there on other people who had success with the autoboat except for the kayakDIY guy so I figured it was worth the couple extra hundred bucks to just do the motorguide. But please let me know if you do the auto boat with success, it looks awesome!
@@PeterRanieriII will do, i would also do the motorguide but my main issue is the weight of it so I am opting for the autoboat for now. I can always upgrade so its not a huge deal.
Hey! Yeah I don't really like to keep striped bass, just find them more fun to catch. In years past I would keep like 1 a year but I dont think I have kept one this year yet. With the right recipes they do taste pretty good though.

Question: do you think fishing is better on a pre/early weekend compared to late/post weekend given fishing pressure - even if modest?
Awesome ricky thats inspiring to hear your getting into a kayak on the sound! I love the sound, especially the places with less boat traffic. I personally haven't really noticed if the beginning of the weekend vs the end of the weekend fishes differently due to fishing pressure. I actively try to fish places that don't see a lot boat pressure. If your going stripers or weakfish I think you need to focus on places that don't see a lot of boat traffic though and early morning is best. For the bottom fishing like seabass, fluke, porgy I don't think the boat noise or traffic matters that much but obvious places can get fished out, thats for sure

"Ever tried to push a chain?" Word from Stan Sloan when asked about his mounting an electric motor on the bow of his bass boat in a BASS tournament, the very first member to do so. All crafts respond to oncoming force (wind, current) when their power source PULLS them along, allowing the rudder in the stern to steer the craft like the way a forklift would. A craft will be more efficient when going from spot A to Spot B being propelled from the stern, using a power source that turns the hull to achieve steering (a turning motor). A side-mount has to constantly correct the centerline of the craft, because it is pushing thrust with a side-force, causing the craft to naturally want to go in a circle. I've been boating for 50 years, I've seen everything from nuclear reactor-driven gearboxes spinning giant propellers, to cordless drills with a super-long rod and small prop chucked in them for propulsion sources. Remember all this. Hydrodynamics and propulsion. You cant beat a fishing vessel with a bow-mount motor and a good, stationary rotor to let the bow motor steer efficiently, for a vessel where the person is standing and fishing, especially with a breeze or wind. You cant sit and fish with a headwind, you'll be constantly correcting your bow, with a stern-mounted motor. They are better for going from point A to point B, .
Everything your saying is correct. I've noticed having the motor in the bow definitely allows for a smoother ride, especially with headwinds. Having it in the stern though for specific types of fishing and environmental conditions I think is better. For freshwater bass anglers the bow makes sense as you want efficient control while your casting the shorelines in relatively calm water. For me though I wanted this motor to essentially do what a conventional anchor does in saltwater, except without swinging when the tide changes because Im trying to fish a specific rock in 70' of water with a ripping current.

I think my opinion is a bit bias since I've only ever owned a compass and a passport but I love my compass. Without question it has been the single best purchase I ever made in terms of fishing gear. The opportunities that opened up were more than I even imagined, and I genuinely love fishing from a kayak with pedals. Would I also love fishing from an outback or old town model? probably yes. If you like to do mods yourself though and transport ease is important to you, compass is hard to beat
I have both a 2019 Outback and 2022 Compass. They are very comparable performance wise but the Compass is about 30# lighter fully rigged. The Outback handles rough water better. My two cents.
