Motorguide Xi3 kayak trolling motor with pinpoint GPS (spot lock) STERN MOUNTED!? Install and Test

I researched a long time to try and find someone who had attempted to put a GPS trolling motor in the stern or back of a kayak and didn't find much. The few that said they did, voiced concern over the overcompensation that may occur as the motor attempts to pull the boat in reverse while it anchor locks or "spot locks". One of the main reasons I wanted in the back of the kayak when anchoring is so that my line will scope out in front me. Its much more difficult to get good hooksets when your forced to fish off to the side of your kayak as your line scopes out behind the boat.
I ended up installing both a bow mount and stern mount using the quick release bracket screwed into 1" cutting board and then affixed that to my Hobie Compass 2021 using the power pole mount for the stern (rear). I also upgraded the rudder on the kayak to an aluminum one.
If you are curious about the bow mount for this kayak, see this video: • Motorguide Xi3 kayak t...

"Ever tried to push a chain?" Word from Stan Sloan when asked about his mounting an electric motor on the bow of his bass boat in a BASS tournament, the very first member to do so. All crafts respond to oncoming force (wind, current) when their power source PULLS them along, allowing the rudder in the stern to steer the craft like the way a forklift would. A craft will be more efficient when going from spot A to Spot B being propelled from the stern, using a power source that turns the hull to achieve steering (a turning motor). A side-mount has to constantly correct the centerline of the craft, because it is pushing thrust with a side-force, causing the craft to naturally want to go in a circle. I've been boating for 50 years, I've seen everything from nuclear reactor-driven gearboxes spinning giant propellers, to cordless drills with a super-long rod and small prop chucked in them for propulsion sources. Remember all this. Hydrodynamics and propulsion. You cant beat a fishing vessel with a bow-mount motor and a good, stationary rotor to let the bow motor steer efficiently, for a vessel where the person is standing and fishing, especially with a breeze or wind. You cant sit and fish with a headwind, you'll be constantly correcting your bow, with a stern-mounted motor. They are better for going from point A to point B, .

Everything your saying is correct. I've noticed having the motor in the bow definitely allows for a smoother ride, especially with headwinds. Having it in the stern though for specific types of fishing and environmental conditions I think is better. For freshwater bass anglers the bow makes sense as you want efficient control while your casting the shorelines in relatively calm water. For me though I wanted this motor to essentially do what a conventional anchor does in saltwater, except without swinging when the tide changes because Im trying to fish a specific rock in 70' of water with a ripping current.

Hey Peter. Nice. But I see it getting moved to the front in the future. You fish too much current to steer from the rear, in particular..... spot lock. You'll be facing with your back into the current. Which isn't necessarily a bad way to fish. People drop out of the back of boats all the time. It's just different than how you have fished up until now. Floating a bobber out the back (which would be off your bow) is fun. Watching that float go down is exciting. Look forward to seeing how it plays out.

Francus, I do like it in the front as well. I actually already have the bow mount working and I switch it back and forth depending on the type of fishing planned. For anchoring in current with little wind, this actually works well with it in the back as the gps doesn't adjust too much since there's a steady direction. If I have a windier day with less current i think the front is better. But yeah still need to put it across some more environments and situations to really see how it does. Again, I don't think I will bring it with me like this every time I go out, the small motor on the side is still great for longer distance treks and like you mentioned I typically fish while drifting slowly anyways so its not completely necessary.

Hold the remote upside down to correct the arrows for the correct orientation. But, faster/slower iss now reversed... Same goes for the jog feature when in gps hold. That way, you're facing away from the xi3 and the jog buttons align to your 5' movements. Only issue if your in wind or current, the gps mode will keep your stern into the current/wind. For guys that have a 360 seat and a bow mount, this works the same. Really nice in a Nucanoe with the 360 seat.
@PeterRanieriII
@PeterRanieriII 2 месяца назад
lol yea the backward remote messes with your head but only at first, honestly it was easy to adjust after a few times. your right, I really have to see how it performs in different wind/tide conditions but so far all the times I tried it when those are relatively constant and steady, it does just fine holding me stable without going back and forth. Thats a great point about the 360 seat, that would be ideal!

Hey hows the xi3 on the back of the kayak I never seen anyone do that? Is the spot lock good or did you end up moving it to the front?
@PeterRanieriII
@PeterRanieriII 2 месяца назад
I have the mount on the front and back and have tested it out on both, it works just fine for both placements. My initial thoughts are that if you have the right conditions the back spot lock works fine. I think where it may struggle is if there just isn't enough wind or current to engage it in a steady direction. But to me, if those are the conditions, I would pull the motor up and pedal myself to stay in place

I noticed at 21:00 the motor kicked up when running in reverse. So it is possible to leave the motor unlocked? My concern is the motor being able to kick up when hitting an obstruction. There are many oyster bars where I fish. If I mount a motor on the bow or in a slot in front of the seat it can’t flip up and will be damaged.
@PeterRanieriII
@PeterRanieriII 5 дней назад
thats a good question. I guess in theory if you only had the motor running in the forward position it could be unlocked and still work...I dont think i would recommend that though but yeah I think it could work. best practice is just stowe the motor in shallow water, even if it can flip up likely an impact would damage the prop
@MNBDH34

@@PeterRanieriII That begs the question: what is the problem with leaving it unlocked? Greatly appreciate your feedback

Interesting but looks to be quite a bit heavier than my Bixpy. But probably a little faster. BTW I’ve been using ½” cutting boards for most of my projects. Inexpensive and seems to be rigid enough for brackets, etc. It took me awhile to find the Hobie Compass mount for the power pole to mount my Bixpy.
@PeterRanieriII
@PeterRanieriII 2 месяца назад
Man I love cutting boards as working surfaces, that def my go to for this kind of stuff now as well. yeah its a heavy motor thats for sure, you might get better top speed with bixpy, i think anyways. this whole project was mainly for anchoring in places that are too dangerious to use a conventional anchor in the sound. Yeah thanks agin for telling me about the power pole mount, your right its not easy to find

@@PeterRanieriII On my Outback I’ve exceeded 5mph calm and around 3-3.5 against current. I really haven’t been in severe current with my new FL Compass so I’m seeing the same speeds. I thought it might be a bit faster since the Compass is considerably lighter. I think I sourced the mount from a dealer in Cincinnati, probably 5-6 months after I purchased it. The FL dealer told me they were 6-12 months back ordered when I purchased the yak.
