@@daz51173 .....you have to program the frequencies for your local airport into the radio. You can either enter the frequency via the keyboard or it is easier to connect the radio to a pc via a programming usb lead. You can either use the free to download "chirp" software but I prefer to use the "modified CPS software" for the 17pro GPS which is available for free download from www.miklor.com
No, unfortunately it can't pick up shortwave. There is an excellent and cheap little radio which does pick up shortwave called the Retekess V115 though. If you put that name into Google you will find where to buy it. 👍😎
P.S. one other thing of note that I may have failed to mention in the video. BOTH radios MUST be displaying the GPS screen when sending coordinates and NOT the frequency screen ie. both radios are in GPS mode when sending coordinates or the coordinates will not send!
The algorithm suggested this video when I was searching for DJI drone reviews, but I can't say I'm disappointed. I've got some older Baofeng radios from years ago and wasn't aware they had a new model with GPS functionality. Now I'm going down a rabbit hole and thinking about upgrading. Happily subscribed, thank you for the detailed video!
My question is about frequencies of UV-5RH. On back side after removal of battery I see 136-174 MHz; 400-520 MHz. Same as on mine. I ordered multi-band version and where I can find information about aircraft frequencies??? 108- ... MHz ?
My radio says UV17PRO on the sticker, but no GPS.....we could call all of this "the attack of the horrible baofengs"... :)) - there are a TON of variants!
And i have a fourth (or fifth) model!! - the UV17PRO (non GPS version), looks exactly as the PRO17GPS -- it is a tribander, and also has the AIR-band, (so fourband) but the Air sounds terrible...because it has no real AM-receiver/detector, hope there could come an AM-hack to it, as they did to the Quangshen, 73, Levi
Kia ora from Aōtearoa new zealand bro, appreciate your review im confident in buying the uv-18 pro now. See use in the Rugby world finals very soon... Go the mighty Allblacks😉 Nga mihi💪🏾
Excellent presentation. Been thinking about buying a pair but wanted more info, which you kindly provided. Have a great Sunday from Northeast Texas US. 👍
Thank you for your very informative video! Have to say however that the "Sean Connery" voice tops everything else! 73 from Greece! Also to add a note that you seem to be the only channel to have presented the UV-18 pro max - which seems to be a very interesting budget radio! Everyone else seems to be "fixated" on the Tidaradios H3/H8 (thanks to a very aggressive PR campaign from the company - which sends them out to everyone for review...) - So one more reason to watch your channel!
Do we know what protocol the two radios use to transfer GPS data? I know the UV17rPro can send gps data directly to another UV17R Pro, but can the 18 pro max send and receive gps position to a UV17RPro ? If we could document the protocol it might be useful to create a APRS gateway
I'm not an expert on that but it is my understanding that whatever protocol it uses it limits GPS communication to radios of the same type eg two 17pro GPS or two 18 pro max. I have a 17 pro GPS and an 18 pro max and they do not communicate via GPS with each other unfortunately. ☹️
@@bigwill4423 Huh, seems like a real oversight to not allow at least the 18 and 17 to share the same gps location protocol. Still I suspect if we get enough recordings with a SDR it should be possible to reverse engineer the protocol.
Can you transmit on any good frequencies? Like the 5R? I ordered a 5G plus ad it’s worthless. It only transmits on the 20 frequencies that are factory set. it’s a new model which is impossible to unlock. Yes, I tried all the 3 button tricks.
Great Video, thanks 🙏 I’ve heard a few people accuse Baofeng of copying Quansheng, but isn’t this just tit for tat, started by Quansheng, who not only copied Baofeng’s red/blue button layout but even CALLED it the UV-5R+?
Great detailed and thorough review. Facing God’s Holy Wrath, WW3, etc, True Believers will definitely need an alternative form of communications in order to help protect the dwelling place of The Holy Spirit in us and those who God placed under our stewardship. Thank you! 👍
Yes, they updated and revised the names of these radios after I did the video. Unfortunately it seems you can no longer get the "black background screen" version that I have....which is a shame because I quite like it.
....apologies if I was "long winded". I am just an amateur and my videos are unscripted and I probably do tend to "ramble on". I will endeavour to do better in the future.
Got one of these last week just for airband just for taking to the airport....I have bases scanners at home......£29 as opposed £160...what a rip off so I gave one a try. Anyway.....I got myself one of these made in china walkie talkies a year or so ago that had air band...not a Baofeng....it was useless.....unless the transmitting station was weak....the signal was so distorted to be near unreadable...AM Airband. I got a refund....then I saw Baofeng where doing these things with airband I an d I thought....surely there will be better....had Baofeng experience before as I am a radio ham.....I have anther 2 just for 2mt use.....very very good on anything FM. But what a disappointment the AM Airband side of my UV-17 pro is.....near useless....I took it to the airport....not expecting it to be and good being near the transmitting station.....and yes it was garbage. Been into airband since the 1960s.....so I know good from poor. So dont buy one of these with airband.....keep your dosh in your pocket..... The UHF rx side of it is useless....so I put the antenna of the old UV-5 onto the UV-17.....its the basic one supplied some years ago....what a difference.....so the supplied antenna with the UV-17 is useless on UHF. If I take out the battery on my radio....it says its a UV-17Pro.....so looking under the battery should tell you which radio you have. Luckily I dont need the software....I program the radio from the key board....cant put name to freq though.....but no big deal PS firmware version is displayed in menu item 46 on my radio. which is V0.06 hardware V01 Nick 2E0LPL.
Thanks for the in depth overview of the Baofeng K5 Plus radio. But according to more in depth tests done by others with this radio, it does not meet spectral purity standards as required by US FCC regulations -and probably regulations in other countries including the UK. The second harmonic is less than 20dB down from the fundamental frequency. While it seems that the features and price of this radio are attractive, it is a dirty radio that should not be used on Amateur Radio spectrum until Baofeng implements sound design to address spectral purity.
I picked up one of these a few years ago and while it's not my favorite SLR it always gives me good results in aperture priority since I have not bought the manual adapter for it yet. Also if you're using Flash without the manual adapter you still put the camera in manual Lord and I believe that in manual mode without the adapter it defaults to 1/60 of a second which is the max sink speed for Flash with this camera. I also use a hot shoe adapter that has a PC sync port so I can you use my Sunpak 522 Flash what does PC sink only
