I have had this lens for a year or so along with the Samyang 24mm f1.8. Both lenses have no or very least focus breathing when doing video work. Love the focusing ring that can be double up as an aperture ring.

Appreciating this video! I found a used Nikon 55mm -macro lens f/1.28 at a bargain price: it took me awhile to get used to the manual focusing feature, but once I got over that, I'm LOVING the sharpness and natural image perspective! Thanks for your information...

As always, enjoyable. Which is seldom when technical aspects and hardware are concerned. I agree, that shooting with prime lenses and using the legs as a zoom creates more artistic results. Since - like it or not - zoom lenses are merely "cropping the picture" without impacting the perspective.

Great review. I was wondering how do you know when using Dlog that you've exposed correctly? Do you rely on the histogram or the EV value? I've heard some people say the color assist screen makes the values inaccurate. Others say the overexposure warnings with the zebra stripes can also give a false reading?! And which is the best ratio for video 16:9 or 4:3. Any difference in quality here?
@TheBergreens
@TheBergreens День назад
Excellent questions. I don’t typically use DLog so I’m not the best to answer that. I believe the 16x9 will give you a better image quality. I think the 4x3 is cropped in.

I do K9 dog photography with stills and fast moving action "agility track" fast dog action. The only one thing that is holding me back from buying the a7R V today, is I've heard that the rolling shutter is horrific. Can you comment or make a video on that topic? Thank you greatly!!!

Yes, rolling shutter is an issue with video but if you shoot photos with the mechanical shutter it’s not a concern. Hope that helps!

I wonder how the A7Siii would have looked at its 2nd native iso 12800... you should have done one more comparison up from 6400.
@TheBergreens
@TheBergreens 15 дней назад
A fair question! I'm not sure if the native ISO applies the same in photos as it does in video but definitely worth exploring! I typically find 12800 to be too high on any photo camera for making prints but maybe its still good for digital display? Not sure.

I watched every review on this lens since it was released. I just bought it and took it on 3 trips. NO ONE, NO REVIEWER, NO ONE OUT THERE, mentioned the fact that your vertebra will literally snap from the weight of your camera bag if you have this lens and you camera body and anything else in it. Like say you have this lens and you camera body and I bug lands a top of your camera bag and ads it’s body weight to your deceptively heavy bag… SNAP!!!! I won’t return it because it’s a good lens. But just be warned… SNAP!!

Heads up, the screws that run through the mount ring go about *1/16"* into *PLASTIC* (4 threads). If you ever drop your camera, even from a short distance, the screws WILL strip out... ask me how I know lol. The lens was on the ground and the mount was still hooked to the camera. Thankfully, this didn't happen during a wedding or any paid work. I cannot believe they built it so poorly. I took apart the mount on the Samyang 135 f1.8, and it uses longer screws and anchors into a METAL ring. After loving and shooting this lens for over a year, there's no way I can ever trust it. Thinking back, I'm so thankful this happened during a family event and not while I was doing a job. After it's repaired, I'll be selling it.
@TheBergreens

Good to know! This is the type of stuff that is hard to observe without having this type of experience, thanks for sharing!
@MichaelRoachWV
@MichaelRoachWV 28 дней назад
@@TheBergreens yep, honestly I was astonished when I saw this. Anchoring screws into plastic is ok on small / light lenses, but this isn’t a small or light lens. Typically, they’d go in about 1/4” into the lens body. They created a beautiful, functional, and economical lens, but this is a major design flaw. They sent autoreply bs without reading my initial email. I responded to it and they provided more information. I’ll be calling today, but I’m not very hopeful lol. With any lens, I always keep the lens hoods on as an extra protective measure. Typically they’ll deflect / break with any impact. But… not if the mount connects 1/16” into plastic 😂

I used both this and the Sony 50/1.2GM and I think this lens is as sharp as the GM, however, the GM is faster, has better AF and has a lot better CA control. Still the 55/1.8 ends up in my camera bag more often. I love its character and pop.

Everyone talking about how they like 35mm because of size and weight while I walk around with my 1.4 sigma art 35mm which is as heavy as my 85mm and 70-300 together... 😂its kinda love or hate focal length tho , I personally love to use it for weddings/portraits/indoor stuff , and for some reason I hate how it looks when I shoot cars/landsapes . Its funny that I originally bought it for landscapes and I just don't bring it with me anymore when I go out , I just throw on 70-300 on and 85 in my bag (which I LOVE to use for sunsets and landscapes , everyone finds it weird for some reason like its only made for portraits) that way I don't have to worry about 1000$ lens and I have light bag .

Good channel you have and good informative videos. But I completely disagree with your take on cameras. I am a wedding and portrait photographer, and I also do a lot of corporate work. I use APS-C Fujifilm cameras for everything I do. Small fantastic cameras with small lenses. The largest lens I have is the Tamron 17-70/2.8. Additionally, I sometimes use manual focus and other times auto focus. I checked my last 3000 pictures and there were 4 that were slightly out of focus. When I say this, it means that it all comes down to knowing your equipment inside and out and not thinking about using it, but just doing it. I use the Fuji X-T2 and X-T3. For me, it's also about being minimalist, especially at events. You also need to know your flashes inside and out.I have met a number of full-frame camera photographers who certainly believe that they can take pictures without flash, as their camera and lens are fantastic in low light. Huge mistake.This is not a critique, as different photographers have different preferences and respect to all those who take good pictures. But you can definitely be a professional photographer without heavy full-frame equipment...

For the hobbyist, does it make sense to have both a 35 and a 50? Currently, I have a 50 and an 85. I want something that allows me to get more in the frame in tighter spaces, but I feel like if I had both a 35 and a 50, one lens would eventually be relegated to sitting on a shelf in a closet. I'd sell my 50, but it's shocking how much less you can sell a used lens for, even if it's in Like New condition. I thought about the 24mm, as a compliment to the 50, but I find 24mm extremely challenging to compose with. Thanks for your wonderful channel.
@TheBergreens
@TheBergreens Месяц назад
Yeah sometimes certain lenses don’t have as much resale, it really depends on how old it is. As far as 35 vs 50, I would say they are different enough. I often head out with a 35 and a 50 in my bag. Maybe shop used and see if you can find a deal on a 35? If I had to choose I’d much rather have a 35 & 85 than a 35 & 50. I agree that 24 is a little wider and not as easy to use as a 35. Good luck!
