I’m a pastor that loves to work with my hands. I try to be creative learning new things and building things instead of buying them. So I want to take you along in my learning process and maybe show you some of the things I have learned along the way.

Oh man that’s bad, but I can relate. I think I’ve been seriously to minor injured by almost every tool in my shop. So welcome to the club. My latest injury was table saw kick back related. I stupidly removed the riving knife in order to use a thin kerf blade. The saw launched a 2 x 4 x10” piece of timber at me slicing deep into my wrist, forearm and chest. There was blood everywhere and my wife rushed me to the ER. It took 10 stitches and I still bear the scares. Lesson learned the hard way. You’re not alone. But here’s a story. My boat builder grandfather sawed off his middle finger like you. The thing that bugged him most was winter gloves with that floppy finger. So every year my sainted aunt would knit him a pair of gloves with one short middle finger. I tell all my fingerless carpenter friends that story because like my grandfather you’ll be ok with only a minor inconvenience in the long run. Just don’t do it again.

holy shit. this is how human reaction comes to fault. I had something similar happen to me with an boxcutter. Almost cut all the way through 3 finger tendons. Luckily, only one was damaged leaving me with perfectly good fingies. Thanks to your video, this is something I will think of.

I think people like you so this on purpose, at least subconsciously, 'coz is a great $ maker on monetization, if it happens, it's The Underdog Effect: that brings virality, monetization and followers by the Ton, great for the channel to secure popularity on Social Media fast, and have every video get viral audience everytime for a while at least. You did this on purpose 'coz you knew your job well, there are saw that stop on touch, there are Hand, Eyes and Tool protection equipment that should Always be wore on, and you just didn'; your tone of voice have no hint of regret, pain, or suffering, the earnings are just too sweet, are they? This happened to me as well. Lost the tops of my index, middle and third finger. It happened so quickly that there wasn't actually much pain. I just looked down on the floor and saw my fingers. "Uha, I guess those are mine!" Like you, I was just trying to get a job finished too quickly and I momentarily lost concentration. Soooo annoying!! I just wanted to rewind the time and not do what I just did.

Years ago, I dropped a Japanese plane blade, heavy incomparably sharp, and caught it with my socked foot. To this day I am proud of my reaction, and all that happened was a very squishy foot. Blood overflowing my Birkenstock. But I have chased the falling tool. I am not better than anyone else who has done the same thing. However, 60 years of woodworking, and no serious effects. On thing that is worth the effort is to have a good set of hand tool skills. That way there is usually a way you can do something with high accuracy and zero risk. Obviously if you are cutting a herringbone pattern for a deck, you are going to have to speed it up. But if you need a different way to do something and the most obvious way is not safe, whip out the hand saw. Often for one off cuts it is actually faster, since power tools usually come with a bunch preparations and cleanup, that may not be there with hand tools for a one-off. One thing I learned from timber framing is always have a left and a right saw on the job. I prefer lefts for most things, and with batteries it is often the case that all the options are lefts, but I still like having both.

A second is all it takes..... I hit my pinky with jigsaw whilst rushing and not paying attention and that is arguably the safest kind of electric saw there is. That put a big dent in my competency levels and 8 stitches. I hope it all healed up well for you.

Much of the time reflexes work to save you, sometimes they do just the opposite. Painful lesson, sorry it had to happen that way.

Losing part of a finger is not always a bad thing. Australia's cricket captain, Pat Cummins, lost the top of his middle finger in his childhood when his sister slammed a car door on it. He ended up with his index and middle fingers being the same length on his dominant hand. In cricket, he is a fast bowler (think pitcher in baseball). Some commentators have suggested that this has given him an advantage. With two fingers the same length, he would have better control over seam position (which is really important in cricket) as he releases the ball. I'm not sure if this story helps at all, but all the best to you anyway. (Fast bowlers aren't rushing to shorten their middle fingers).

It’s a man thing. Nature has endowed us with cat like reflexes which we hone to perfection by applying our superhuman instincts. So far, I’ve avoided doing it in the workshop, but in the kitchen I have instinctively caught the aluminium handle of a falling pan fresh out of a 230C oven, and a falling Japanese 8” chef’s knife - by the blade…..D’Oh!

So sorry this happened to you. I always worry about being tired, distracted, in a hurry, or just "having one of those days". It doesn't matter how smart you are, how skilled you are, and even being careful has its limits. Thanks for sharing your story. I always watch these accident videos to remind myself that I could be next. Hope you are fully healed and managing okay.

Two weeks before Xmas I managed to take the meaty part of middle finger off either a table saw. Two weeks after Xmas I then managed to slice down the top of my other middle finger, it certainly made me even more aware of the dangers involved in woodworking. I hope your well on then mend.

If gaps are a saw blade width or less, you can also use your track saw to cut down the seam (cutting both slabs, of course) and you get the same result. One cut is all that is needed.

Hey man, sorry you had such an accident, thank you for your video, as woodworkers we always need reinforcing in regard to safety, I am guilty of getting complacent at times, as you mention, very dangerous. Ou reactions are our most dangerous asset,. I am 80 years old and carry my own badge of carelessness , we must always try our very best to stay alert, rpm's have no second chance. Thank you again, wishing you quick healing and a great future.
