Great song on a truly wonderful debut LP. For the life of me, I don’t know how this band wasn’t more successful. As a youngster, I’d go to watch the Icicle Works as often as I could and I’d never seen anything like it. What they generated as a band live was absolutely phenomenal.
So good to hear this song again. Timeless and very stirring. I am pleased that I saw Mike on a number of occasions. He has been a significant musical figure in my life. A great man.
The best 8 minute song ever and when Stairway to Heaven and Bohemian Rhapsody are next on my list that aint to bad, long may folk music dwell in our history.
So emotive, brings me to tears . The song about the man and the deer is so affecting its almost hard to listen to . My favourite track. Had this since 1976. My favourite album of all time
This song, along with the other songs on the album are so emotive they almost bring me to tears, especially the man and the dear.my all time favourite song. I've had this album since it came out in 1976
"It's a very dirty track in a lot of ways. It's kind of about the inspiration I get from my wife." [Richard Hawley referring to his song She Brings The Sunlight]
Well here are a few simple admonitions for young and old Never interfere in a boy-and-girl fight Beware of whores who say they don't want money The hell they don't What they mean is they want more money much more If you are doing business with a religious son-of-a-bitch Get it in writing His word isn't worth shit Not with the good Lord telling him how to fuck you on the deal Words of advice for young people If after having been exposed to someone's presence You feel as if you've lost a quart of plasma Avoid that presence You need it like you need pernicious anemia Don't like to hear the word vampire around here Trying to improve our public image Build up a kindly, avuncular, benevolent image Interdependence is the key word Enlightened interdependence Life in all it's rich variety Take a little, leave a little However, by the inexorable logistics of the vampiric pyrosis They always take more than they need Now some of you may encounter the Devil's Bargain If you get that far Any old soul is worth saving At least to a priest But not every soul is worth buying So you can take the offer as a compliment They tries the easy ones first You know like money All the money there is Yeah, but who wants to be the richest guy in some cemetery? Money won't buy Not much left to spend it on, eh gramps? Getting too old to cut the mustard Well time hits the hardest blows Especially below the belt How's a young body grab you? Like three card monte, like pea under the shell Now you see it, now you don't Haven't you forgotten something, gramps? In order to feel something You have to be there You have to be eighteen And you're not eighteen You are seventy-eight Old fool sold his soul for a strap-on Words of advice for young people
first heard this (prob on John Peel) around 54 yrs ago and tried to find it for ages thinking the title was 'slightly blue'. Then got Postcards on a sampler album and realised it was him and found in the valley. Had a ticket to see him just before covid but was cancelled and never got another chance. RIP
I met Doug at the Columbus theater in providence and told him his song Mister Wrong saved my life. I just want to let you know I’m doing good my brother and wanted to thank you for your kindness and words of encouragement I’ll never forget them. I love this song btw and couldn’t relate more to the words in your new album.
This song is 500 years old, still sounds relevant today. It was originally written for the daughter of a Member of parliament, Lady Carey. To this day we really don't know what a "dompe" is.
I can not figure it out, but can it be that this guy is only known to very few people? There is a lot of folk music around over the decades .. he' s very good, thanks
