My husband and I are moving to Oregon in a couple months so I’ve been watching so many videos. (Thank you for all your content by the way🙏) One thing no one ever mentions is the huge prison right in the middle of the town. How can no one mention this? What’s up with that?
@SalemOR
@SalemOR 8 часов назад
How exciting! What part of Oregon are you moving to? Yes, Salem does have a prison located in NE Salem off of State St. From my perspective and experience, it doesn't have an impact on my daily life. I don’t spend much time in that area of town since there isn't much commerce or retail around there, so there's little reason for me to be over that way. However, I'd love to hear what others have to say and if it affects their daily life or experience in the city. Especially if they live close to it. It's also worth noting that, as the state capital, Salem has some features that other cities might not, like the prison in NE Salem, the State Hospital (in NE Salem next to the prison), the Oregon State Correctional Institution (off HWY 22 on the eastern side of town), and other uncommon sites like the Amazon fulfillment center, the State Capitol Building, and the Governor's residence. Thank you for bringing up this topic! I'll make an effort to be more mindful of Salem's unique features in future videos.

@@SalemOR thank you so much for replying. I appreciate it! We’re looking from McMinnville down to probably Albany. There are so many great towns in your area. I do love Salem’s mid-century gems but I’m not quite sold on their downtown which is important to me. We’re still in the process of getting our current house on the market (Utah) but I’ll definitely keep you in mind when we finally get to Oregon. Thanks again!

Funny you can't connect to Cordon Rd from Hiway 22 east.....they're getting ready to develop more housing near there. So the Lancaster intersection will be saturated..
@SalemOR
@SalemOR 8 часов назад
You're right, there should be a connection between HWY 22 and Cordon, that little overpass bridge could totally be expanded and have an exit. That would be fantastic! It makes sense that they are going to build housing out that way, those empty fields have been getting pruned for a while now. Do you know what kind of housing is going in there? I'm guessing apartments?

My mother's family moved to Salem from a remote part of the state, when she was 9 years old. When I was growing up in Eugene, every year we would spend a couple of weeks in Salem, visiting relatives. I never had a more bleak and miserable time in my life. It was as though there was a citywide dynamic that was turned down to the lowest possible setting. Exactly the opposite of what a young person wants to endure. And the water pipes were coated with sulfur from the old, polluting paper plants, so the water stank and tasted foul. I imagine it could be a great place for an old, sedentary person, but not for someone with a lot of energy and desire for a vigorous life.

But Salem is not SIMILAR TO NAPA. It is more like VALLEJO. Same crime, same ghetto, same gangs, murders, vacant downtown businesses, fast food only, she took picture of the only decent place to eat in Salem, and the wine is SO MUCH BETTER, and the BREAD AND FOOD IS SO MUCH BETTER. People in Salem think Olive Garden is good Italian food. 🤮 Pizza here is revolting. There is no Mary’s Pizza Shack or anything like it. There is no La Estrada, No Kitchen door, no Clemente’s, no The Q, no Bistro Don Giovanni… ex-pats make roadtrips to get food, BREAD, wine, and all the things you don’t appreciate living in CA. Have you ever been to Sign of the Bear kitchen store in Sonoma? That type of store doesn’t exist in Oregon. Sonoma Jack Cheese? 👅 Donuts? Don’t get me started. Your 1.7 million dollar tract shack in Napa is $400k-$600k, but you will spend $1M on anti-depressants in the winter from the weather and flights out of this place on weekends.

For us the small town atmosphere is relaxing. Our grandchildren live here and we find that we worry less about the bad influences they may encounter. Regarding the question on homelessness. There are no tent cities and we seldom see them. Politically, you have both ends of the spectrum, rural conservatives and progressive liberals.

So Silverton came to us more than we found Silverton. Silverton seemed to be a good choice. I had reservations, having never lived outside an urban area. Now I find it a calm and refreshing change. It has been a great place for our Grandchildren to be raised. We do not live in Silverton full time but do spend a lot of time there. I can hear some folks complaining about Californians now. I'm a Utah transplant and I could not agree more! I love the diverse culture, the fact that I can drink in a restaurant without being treated like a common criminal, and the fact that the weather isn't extreme on either end. Oregonians are so much nicer than they give themselves credit for, and far nicer than Utahns think they are. Nobody tries to sell you on their side hustle like they do in Utah! Oregon has long had a reputation as being more expensive than Utah, but we were able to buy the same sized house with four times the land and ten times the charm and character. We don't regret moving, and dread the day when we may have to move back for family.

I feel like we hear it more often than Spanish. Discovering more about Russian old believers has been really interesting, and at first we wondered if there was a secret community of polygamists here. I think a video on ethnic/religious/lifestyle communities around the Willamette would be helpful for people who want to connect or at least be aware of the area's diversity. @@SalemOR It hasn't been super easy, but my spouse and I are pretty introverted anyway. We've gotten to know our neighbors pretty well. It's taken a year or so, but we have BBQs and stuff with them. We've joined some book clubs as well, so we're finding people! We have noticed that there is a bit of cliquey-ness, especially where we are, but it seems to stick mostly to the older generations. We've managed to avoid it. Oregonians always talk about how cliquey their towns are, but trust me, it has NOTHING on Utah! If you aren't Mormon, you basically don't exist. I imagine it gets worse here with the more isolated or small a town is, but Salem really isn't too bad. We've had so many random pleasant conversations with strangers. It really helped put us at ease because we expected the Seattle chill applied to the whole PNW, but it totally doesn't. Salem is so down to earth and real. It's not shiny and new like the hottest housing markets in Utah, but even if people are a little slow to warm up to strangers, I've never felt like Utahns are as genuinely kind as Oregonians!

I grew up in Amity , and looking to retire soon. I used to know Salem very well. just looking for a small SF home for myself and my wife, and NO HOA......... Just some place quite where I can build my amplifiers. Perhaps a conversation in the near future....
