Clarkson is as funny as terminal gonorrhea and looks about as good. I've had two of this Range Rover model (P38A) and two of the previous, Classic model. Life's too short for riceburners.
I had a 4.6 hse and what a bag of spanners. New engine at 92k, gearbox at 95k, suspension failed several times etc etc. But superbly comfortable and economical once i had it converted to lpg.
The Land Cruiser 100 series GREATLY outclasses, outperforms, and most importantly - OUTLIVES all of these. Easily. edit: The patrol Y61 is the only thing that comes close. But is not quite there either.
I've had my rangey for 12 years, used most days,and off roading. never failed to get me home from trips to Europe ect. very reliable. the trick is to stay on top of the maintenance.
I suppose if I was British I would be that nationalistic (biased). Truth be told, the Rover is in a scrapyard, the Merc in a private collection and the Land Cruiser is still a daily driver.
I had an encounter on the IAA 1999. I just sat down in a Range Rover, when a man adressed me by asking: "Are you interested in buying one?" I was a bit confused, because on car shows you always sit down in cars without a closer interest in it. He carried on: "Don't buy it. I have one. It always breaks down." So, this owner of a Range Rover obviously spent the day at the Frankfurt Motor Show to prevent people from buying Range Rovers.
The one featured in this video is a 4.0 inline 6 cylinder engine just if you wanted to know. The 4.0 is much more reliable in my opinion. The 5.9 literally eats fuel
Having had a 1997 Grand Cherokee Limited and a 2003 Land Rover Discovery, I would go with the Grand Cherokee living in the USA. Better MPGs, less breaking down/maintenance, and I thought the styling of the Grand Cherokee was better. Although, I will admit that the Discovery would go anywhere... and I mean anywhere... until the engine blew up on it.
The same thing for Europeans. A lot of them just hate Jeep and other American vehicles. I guess some people don't know what true off-roaders are. True off-roaders have solid axles
I have the same jeep in the video and I 100% agree but a jeep is a good example of American engineering at its best. I love my jeep and never had a problem. :)

+james2964 Jeeps have solid axle 4x4 and are easy to lock up and you have massive aftermarket support for them to lift them and put bigger tires on them. Even with open diffs the jeep could off road better because it has better departure angles, smaller wheelbase, and better ground clearance.
