I had an encounter on the IAA 1999. I just sat down in a Range Rover, when a man adressed me by asking: "Are you interested in buying one?" I was a bit confused, because on car shows you always sit down in cars without a closer interest in it. He carried on: "Don't buy it. I have one. It always breaks down." So, this owner of a Range Rover obviously spent the day at the Frankfurt Motor Show to prevent people from buying Range Rovers.

I used to have a Land Rover. that’s why I’m a mechanic now and own a Jeep.

I've had my rangey for 12 years, used most days,and off roading. never failed to get me home from trips to Europe ect. very reliable. the trick is to stay on top of the maintenance.

I owned an Explorer. Good times. They were everywhere in the 90's (at least around where I live)

Having had a 1997 Grand Cherokee Limited and a 2003 Land Rover Discovery, I would go with the Grand Cherokee living in the USA. Better MPGs, less breaking down/maintenance, and I thought the styling of the Grand Cherokee was better. Although, I will admit that the Discovery would go anywhere... and I mean anywhere... until the engine blew up on it.

i thought that to when i first started watching the video: " oh landrover will win again, it's an english tv-show but now, landcruiser won, was extually surprised :-) (however i knew that landcruiser is better then the range)

The Land Cruiser 100 series GREATLY outclasses, outperforms, and most importantly - OUTLIVES all of these. Easily. edit: The patrol Y61 is the only thing that comes close. But is not quite there either.

Well if you actually properly 4x4 not this piddly ass shit they shown and did, you don't want any of those ifs 4x4s. Even that IFS cruiser he thought was best would be destroyed off road SAS cruiser and patrol. Trust me i'm an Aussie, like he said, we know all there is about off roading (proper off roading).

Yes, but Jeremy says alot of things. He's British, and the car is British. Why would he crack down their own car? He got a Landcruiser 80 because he knows that they'll never break down, even with 300 000 + KM on the meters (diesel of course). Everyone knows that Toyota has the most reliable cars in the world, that's a fact (I dont say other cars are bad!). In fact: 80% of ALL Toyota's are still on the road, today.

@NateJames1 ya no joke plus time has shown the zj is better than the wj. solid front axle or IFS no decision there. zj with v8 has the proven 5.2 L, mine has 203k miles and still runs great, or the new 4.7 L with no track record. and the 242 tc in the zj with the 249 option. 242 is better. i think the wj only uses a 249 but not 100 percent on that. ill take my manual 4x4 242 tc versus a push button or AWD all day long.

I do not think the 4.0L SOHC Explorer does it justice. I have a American 1998 Explorer XLT with the 5.0L V8 and manual 4x4 and front locking hubs. My Explorer beats the crap out of my friends 5.9L Grand Cherokee, on road and off road. Also, my mom had a 1999 Range Rover that we purchased new. That thing spent more time in the shop then it did in our garage, until we traded it in 2011 GLK-350 4-Matic. And we maintain our vehicles well, mine's clocking 216,000 miles now.

@719FoxRider719 Its the kind of people who buy big expensive 4x4. They want something they can take into the countryside once in a while without getting stuck or be safe when it snows and at the same time be comfortable and luxurious. The people who are into serious off roading get the Defender. Saw a top of the range Range Rover V8 Vogue today. It was sweeet!!! If I had the 80k to waste, I'ld get myself a Range Rover. But as I don't, I'll stick to the basic but functional Diesel Land Cruiser.

Range Rover is the best off roader. But i'ld still rather have a normal Land Cruiser (not the big V8). Its half the price of the Range Rover and as good off roading and then its also the most reliable car in the world... Range Rover is for people who want a big luxurious car which they can take off road once in a while. The Defender on the other hand is for proper off roaders who don't know how to drive on anything other than rocks, rivers and dirt and luxury to them is an AC and radio!!

@g37muflih And he owns a LandCruiser Amazon. He also owns a Range Rover too. He says the Land Cruiser is too rugged for British off roading. The reason he likes Range Rover so much is that it is a bit better than the Land Cruiser off roading (more electronics) and it has an amazingly luxurious interior. So its a very comfortable, very luxurious off roader. Only reason its not as popular as the Land Cruiser is because everyone knows the Land Cruiser will go anywhere and will never breakdown.

the explorer was disreguarded because of a few things but being a bad 4X3 wasnt one he should have givin it more of a chance yeah thatone probably had the 4.0L or 4.6L and yeah yeah they are powerful but i mean who wouldnt like a little extra performance its a hotrod ause its gotta be to get through some of thr bogs and ruts we ask our 4X4's to cross britan doesent need that much power they need more torque than power thats why they all use diesel

the "compensation idea" is a terrible stereotype you know. people started buying SUVs for safety actually. they assume that because its bigger it will be able to run over anything else and that there's plenty of crush room. that plus they can carry alot of people and stuff thereby making it good for families; and, w/ 4wd, theyre better in bad weather than minivans and such... so ya, your number two reason is incorrect.

Yea, the average person likes average things. I just can't do it. If I have to be in my car for a few hours a day I want to be in something I enjoy. And I have 2 rovers. One is a 2000 with 120K miles and has never stranded me or not started. And a 2008 Range that has always started and never left me stranded. Minor problems here and there every once in awhile but 100% worth it to me.

100% worth any problem they may have. The looks, the feel, the drive. You feel like a king. Off road they are amazing, and I do take mine off road. It may need to visit the mechanic a little more than the Japanese but well worth it. Just don't take it to the dealer after the warranty expires and you will be fine. I don't buy cars based on reliabilty I buy them based on what I like. Who wants to drive around in a Honda Civic just because it is reliable?

ill admit the range rover is a good vehicle but i would definitely take the basic cherokee over it as an off roader. as a road car though the range rover is the obvious choice its much more comfortable but in an off roader you need reliability, and the range rover just doesnt have it, not like the cherokee.

I think it's hilarious that he had nothing bad to say about the American offering besides the Explorer having Chrome and the Jeep having a new model coming out the next year. He didn't wanna have to say they were better than his Land Rover. I really hope that people don't take Top Gear seriously when the go to purchase a vehicle.

@jan585 Yeah the Patrol is also excellent, but if I were given the choice, I would have gone for the Mitsubishi Pajero. I just feel that the Pajero / Shogun is tougher, OR, if I don't want to pay that much for fuel, I would have gone for a Suzuki Jimny. That car is fully equipped for off-roading as well !!

It definitely is the Land Cruiser, without a doubt. Yes Land Rovers do go off road but they always break down, which already makes no sense as a 4x4. At least at that time, Land Rovers are for those who don't know the Land Cruiser, OR, the Mitsubishi Pajero / Shogun. Both these two Japanese machines are indestructible.

and how does the fact that cher and janet jackson have range rovers apply to this being a good 4x4? they all live in hollywood where there is no suck thing as off road or any conditions that require 4x4---this obviously shows that its considered a luxury car and not a capable 4x4---but they are pretty sexy! ha i'd go with the trooper---oh wait-I already have one! ha

Clarkson is as funny as terminal gonorrhea and looks about as good. I've had two of this Range Rover model (P38A) and two of the previous, Classic model. Life's too short for riceburners.

@dddddddgggggggggg British enginering most popular 4x4's in the world and its esimiated the first vehicle ever seen in one of a third population is are land rovers and thats a true fact. Land Rovers are the best 4x4's cus the british military and army use if you wanna see land rover at his best you must watch camel trophy videos on youtube showing land rovers battleing the roughest terrain in the world. But i still like toyota land cruisers there reliable

I have owned a toyota landcruiser, a land rover, and three jeeps, a wrangler, grand cherokee and a Jeepster. and the ultimate winner is the jeep if you can afford the massive 500 to 800 a year maintence costs then a jeep is for you. I beat the shit out of my cars and if it can survive me than mad props

@godzillaisnuclea123 ha but a 4x4 is only good if you can actually get it out of the driveway!--but I agree, a trooper is more limited when it comes to offroad modifications but its dependable as hell! and surprisingly easy to maintain since it has, dare I say it, a GM motor.

Land Cruiser beats Land / Range Rover any day. They are both very capable cars, but Land Cruiser is far more reliable...Land Rover is cooler, but not any more capable or reliable. If I'm in the Sahara desert and my life depends on the reliability of my vehicle it Land Cruiser all the way.

that's not really true, i've owned 2 jeeps, one a 95 YJ the other a 98 ZJ, also owned an 03 DII and now a 95RRC, it's not that the parts cost too much, its that we're in America and parts for an American car is much easier to find. But i find maintenance and parts to be about the same

if you want a hunting car u really need a diesel ute. have a shooter on the back you dont wanna catch up 2 the animals any way and the diesel is good cause it runs cooler which is really important in australia where i live, i spose thats not as much as an issue in britain

@719FoxRider719 No idea man. already had some reactions why they didn't test Defender, Discovery and others. Who knows it and who will tell it why they didn't tested all these. Probably Jeremy but if they had to test al these off roaders, it would be to much to compare at the same time. and there wouldn't be a clear overview of the vehicles anymore ..

@rellirTnoraa1 you're so wrong! the yj,xj,zj,tj,wj are as good on road as off road, very capable trucks and comfortable ones specially the zj and wj. the xj pretty good but not too comfortable (i've got one xj and zj, and i'm 6"2).

@jan585 I'm just wondering why they didn't do a review of the wrangler---surely its better than a cherokee and certainly the explorer. I view the explorer as more of a family suv that you would drive in snow but not off road unless it was seriously modified

The Nissan Patrol in Australia has always been cheap, but what they don't take into account is fuel economy! My Folks Land Rover Discovery second series is a turbo diesel 1.5L inline 5. It goes pretty well and is VERY fuel efficient.

@dddddddgggggggggg I read a "lot" about people that travel around the world/a continent by 4x4. And what i read a lot is, when they are chosing their 4x4, it's about Defender for looks or Land Cruiser for reliability and that people who choose a Defender have more repairs needed that Land Cruiser ..

I like how the Grand Cherokee gets disqualified simply because its the last of a model year, which I might add was made to be better than the model it was the last of with a bigger engine and other options.

@jan585 I agree with you, here in Australia where I come from it doesnt matter how big your 4x4 is. if it is reliable and takes you where you want (or need) to go then you will buy it, which is why toyota 4x4s are king

@ 7:53 when Clarkson says its enormous. The LC isnt even Toyotas biggest SUV, THe Sequoia is. Id like to see what Clarkson thinks of it! But that 4.7 and Toyotas new 4.6 and 5.7 are extremely bulet proof. My mom has one in her Sequoia, nothing wrong yet!

It's sad watching this video as back then fuel was under 70p a litre whereas now it's nearly £1.50! Which sadly means that running big V8s comes with crippling expense :(

No it isnt, landcruisers are mainly for offroad use, if it was mainly for on road use, they would be able to seel more by making it smaller so it handels better on road.

@jimdrade They sure love Land Cruisers there in South America. Search for 4x4 fun race (or something like that) and you see that in these 'races' they (only) use land cruisers.

the 100 also, the V8 not more I think, but still more an off-road car comparing to the new prado 150 (my opinion) that one also looks terrible from the outside ( again my opinion)

LC is the best i own 1 i own a RR also but when my cousin drove the RR with me to the mountains he gt stuck in the mud n even needed my LC 2 pull him out!!! LOL

A new Land Cruiser will cost you 70k in the U.S. It better outperform a Grand Cherokee which is literally 25k cheaper fully loaded. I'll still take the Jeep.

what a crappy point of view ... the jeep grand cherokee 5.9 not only is great off road it's also pretty comfortable and it would go anywhere

why is he always so bias toward the land rover, its a pos, they kinda suck, plus that jeep is a much better 4x4 and he did not even say anything about it.

All P38's have height adjustable suspension and locking centre diffs. Not all Disco 2's have these features. The Disco also has a longer rear overhang.

yea but in america the fuel prices are much lower... this landcruiser is considerd as an 4x4 or off roader, the landcruiser prado is considerd as the suv

@Douglas6250 Don't forget the Nissan Patrol. Only the GR Y60 2.8 turbo diesel needs some work on the engine at lets say 200.000 km (125.000mile)

He has got a Landcruiser 100 I have ever seen before in a topgear video on youtube about another show with hunters, but i can't find it anymore
