Clueless. Way to stereotype computer programmers, you’ve obviously never been to Silicon Valley. I would feel comfortable assuming that most programmers have more robust social lives than most people. What a silly simple point of view
@chrissheridan33
@chrissheridan33 7 месяцев назад
Yes, perhaps a little stereotyping to make a point. I would further say that contemporary psychologists and sociologists also have a limited viewpoint on what it means to be a social human being. It's more of a comment on how our modern way of addressing the human condition has suffered because we have strayed from the timeless wisdom of ancient philosophy.

C, I love Richard the III...And I love to listen to The Inner Life. (And then you slip in a line, like: "See you at base camp..." and I laugh out loud into the heat return and it echoes down to the furnace and that's cool.)...So, re: the DD and Soul-Longing, it occurs to me (as it does) that the soul urge is a catalyst for something that you can never fully predict--but it all percolates and then just like the garden, the rose is open; the bud has bloomed. (York/Tudor?Roses...) In the seasons of gardening, there is always work to be done and decisions to be made--even when the ground is frozen. There is life beneath and within the bare branches and silent canopy of muted color. I've had a longtime sense of something...(I work best in the winter--studying seed catalogs and observing and putzing and drying flowers and leaves and feeding the animals because--winter! ) Everyone still has to eat and drink (even a dang field mouse) but you can't put water in the birdbath because it expands and contracts. So you set it out in thin sunlight and wait until it's empty. Short days and long nights support quiet work. I was born between winter and spring. That's some duality. Ha! And that's DD sometimes. I've tried time and again to make a "soul urge" I've had for decades happen--and that was the rub. You can't try; that means you're working too hard--and you'll get all self-conscious and screw up the field goal--or some such thing. Maybe, as You speak in your 71st podcast and I listen, with both ears up, it's what you do from moment to moment that brings a soul urge/longing into the Sun. The Light. And if that's true, then good habit/discernment and patience feed and support the soul urge until it can break open like cherry blossoms and dogwoods. Maybe? As you said, we aren't given a dream we can't fulfill. I may have gotten a dose of inspiration from writing this that will fuel some other work. So Thank You, kind sir. I agree with WS that "An honest tale speeds best, being plainly told." ( I just left a bit of myself in this comment and hope it is treated kindly so that others reading will remember, as my beloved Emily Dickinson agreed, to "Judge tenderly of me." ) To the Light within. x

I'm really listening because this is the crux of the biscuit (and I have no idea where I first heard that, I've just been mentally referring to it most of my life.) There are lots of silky ways to spin this stuff and many positive, groovy t-shirts, but you nailed it with the gratitude-- you have to drink the whole potion down to the roots and stems and be grateful you can still swallow and breathe and count backwards even if it burns and your eyes water. As you said, pain is the gift that (not only keeps on giving...ouch) but that keeps us aware and alert and compassionate and present. It's best to get on the old metaphorical knees every day because there is no measurement of good without bad---or, as my pal W. James said, and I've no doubt shared it before..."Faith is doubt." As you said, it's easy to be jolly when the world is going your way; the better plan is to be jolly even when it isn't--especially then, because every word and every deed and every thought is registered and returned, wherever that path up the mountain began. I admire you and your 32 (and counting) record of no pressure wounds/sores--wow. Plus, the upper body strength which I know feeds your freedom and your posture and your voice and chops and mobility and pursuits and accomplishments and future dreams. To live with chronic pain and act with intention and kindness is a measure of grace that humbles and inspires. And then you just let the old podcast roll out of your head and onto the Tube. I like the Anvil story a lot-- ain't we lucky we get to go after it again...and again... We get a sun in the morning and a moon at night. How cool is that. The in-between, the "mean-time" and the dark night-- it's got some juice that old divine discontent. It keeps us revolving and spinning and one step deeper into the present moment and out of it again. We are so lucky that we get a fresh start with every breath--and that we can't breathe into the past or into the future--only into the next note. (I'm sure grateful "Chris" is right here on the Jersey side of 55)--ha! xxoo

I kept up, and the references were running alongside your narrative: several (maybe more) things you said jumped out and I thought about books, poets, mystics, physics, boiling water and baking at high altitude-you name it. I remembered the book about Petit crossing the Towers in ’74 (le coup) and how the narrative structure captures the ground-view from a dozen accounts/viewpoints-all are diverse and fascinating-and it was over before you could recount it; what a marvelous read it was, and remains. The takeaway: meet people where they are-always; you’ll never get any farther if you don’t, let along further into their head and heart. Yes. And then I heard this quote by Arthur Ashe come into my head (of course, some attribute the quote to Teddy Roosevelt, but I’m going with Ashe tonight/this morning because he is a touchstone to my nature). “Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.” I’ve always left the rest to the Universe. The garden is my teacher: the bumblebee and the hummingbird, the ant, the tender shoot, the migration of birds above and the tunneling of worms below. All present and possible and factual and moving: Fact and feeling coalesce and the feeling compels me to seek the facts-it works the other way too because reciprocity is a natural stasis. Merlin told young Arthur (Wort) that the best remedy for feeling sad was to learn something new-to see as the hawk, the owl, the water, the bark. I navigate like that too. Thanks, Chris. As always. x

Timely and eloquent. I have grounding phrases that help me maintain balance: “To be in the world but not of it” is one; another is reminding myself that I Am the one who assigns meaning-molecules, energy, matter -we are always the makers. What we choose to make is up to us in the inner light, the inner life-and finally, a favorite quote by Ms. Edna: “There are two ways to spread light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.” Thank you, Chris, for showing up and sharing yours. ✨✨

The symbolism of the shape of the Discovery spacecraft was something I had picked up on after about my 10th viewing of the movie. After about my 20th time, I caught the image of an actual sperm-like cell superimposed over the animation of the stargate sequence. It occurs about 5 minutes into the “trip”. Your interpretation of the female reproductive elements during the lunar transit was interesting. It is so easy to be transfixed by the mechanics of space travel, especially in the mid-sixties, that any symbolism is lost. I was in high school during that time and the Gemini & Apollo space programs were a huge focus of media attention. Any manned space launch was covered for hours and hours even when there were delays with the rocket just sitting on the launch pad. Space food was a thing. Jet pilots and astronauts had food tubes in their space helmets during long flights. As a gimmick, you could buy NASA style space food packs in grocery stores. They were pretty bad, but you were eating like an astronaut.

Thank you for your comments and insight. I was a little younger then, but I was glued to Apollo and all things space and sci-fi. I watched the original Star Trek series on a black & white TV...it seemed the possibilities were endless and that one day soon we would all be able to go to space or the moon.

Great video! Great channel! I love this film... The "HAL goes crazy" aspect of this film always vexed me. If you really look at it, the film never gives a definitive explanation as to why HAL goes crazy. HAL claims it was "human error", and later he says "This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it". But both of those lines are quite cryptic to say the least. There certainly isn't a scene or sequence that would clue us in to anything specific. I know there ARE explanations from other sources, but I'm the kind of man who believes a film's narrative should stand on its own. And I think Kubrick was that kind of man also... I think he purposely left that explanation ambiguous so we, the audience, could infer something... it was the aliens. The Monolith. Somehow it was able to effect HAL in the same way it was able to affect the brains and minds of the prehumans on prehistoric Earth... It made HAL kill the other astronauts because it wanted only Dave to make it to the stargate.... I know what youre going to say... "HAL tried to kill Dave too, ya know". Yes, but... these are aliens eons more advanced than us. They would be able to predict that one human would make it... one special human... the only human they would accept. Dave Bowman... to become the starchild.

‘Casablanca’ is renowned and is justly acknowledged as one of the most romantic films of all time but it is much more than the tale of a love triangle. Of course, it shows that the power of love can affect the human psyche, as demonstrated by Rick’s metamorphosis. This film has so many levels to it that it takes many viewings to appreciate them. The main theme is not romance but self-sacrifice as the film’s message to the world at war is to give up the personal agenda for the common cause. It reminds wartime audiences, many of whom have loved ones fighting abroad, that their situation is the same as that of Rick, Ilsa and Victor. The screenplay is so intelligently written. It is a masterpiece of complexity, containing subliminal political opinions and messages all carried along on a thrilling plot with brilliant one-liners and memorable quotes, comedic elements, together with contemporary, social commentaries. Basically, the film is politically motivated because it is a plea to America to join the war. Please note that the action takes place in pre-Pearl Harbour, December, 1941. This is the the first non-musical movie to use music almost as an another protagonist, (which Tarantino does now). For example, ‘As Time Goes By’ is a valuable recurring theme and, in Paris, Rick and Ilsa dance to ‘Perfidia’ which means untrustworthiness. Also, ‘Love for Sale’ is played during the dialogue when the Bulgarian girl tells Rick about her ‘offer’ from Renault. Michael Curtiz’s direction is multi-faceted: Documentary, Film Noir, German Expressionism, Flashback etc. He is the master of creating the plot via seamlessly connecting a series of rapid-fire vignettes. There is subtle direction and cinematography. For example, Ilsa wears black and white clothes and is cast in shadows and in a mirror which symbolise the ambiguity of her role. POINTS OF INTEREST AND NOTES FOR SUBSEQUENT VIEWINGS. Rick’s initial selfishness, (I stick my neck out for nobody’), is a metaphor for USA indifference. It must be remembered that the events and politics are hard to comprehend and put into perspective for current audiences than for those living through WW2, not knowing who the victors would be. The script can be considered as a 'State of the Union' address, both for home and foreign policies, in which there are references to Civil Rights, as embodied in Sam and, of course, the debate about America’s involvement in the conflict. Each character represents a country e.g. Two Japanese plotting; the Italian on the tail of the German; American indifference; French collaborators; the British robbed by foreign policy. Even the Balkans are mentioned via the Bulgarian couple. Quite evidently, Rick’s actions symbolise the USA in its change in policy from isolationism to participation and ‘….the beginning of a beautiful friendship…’ is the USA and Europe joining forces to fight Nazism. The significance of Letters of Transit is a metaphor for the might of America’s power and resources and must be delivered to the right side. The ‘La Marseillaise’ scene is the pivotal moment in which both Ilsa and Rick realise that saving Victor is more important than their own personal relationship. It also comes in just as Rick and Victor are about to argue over Ilsa but both drop the issue when they hear the music. This scene is rousing now but imagine how it must have felt for audiences right in the middle of the war when Germany seemed invincible and modern viewers need to put it in perspective in terms of world events full of Nazi and Japanese domination and when the outcome looked very bleak. The facial close-ups used throughout the film speak a thousand words: but particularly note Ilsa during ‘La Marseillaise’ when her expressions show her admiration of Victor’s power and her realisation that this must be preserved at all costs. In any case... there is so much alcohol!!!! POINTS TO WATCH ‘It’s December, 1941 in Casablanca: what time is it in New York?... I bet they are asleep all over America’. PEARL HARBOUR ‘Even Nazis can’t kill that fast’ CONCENTRATION CAMPS ‘I don’t buy or sell human beings..’ CIVIL RIGHTS The Bulgarian couple keep appearing as symbols of hope and determination. In the bar room fight over Yvonne, Rick attacks the German only and not the Frenchman. Captain Renault dumps the bottle of Vichy water to represent his rejection of the Nazi- collaborating French Government which was located in Vichy. Just one example of the excellent and complex scriptwriting occurs immediately after the roulette scene. The girl thanks Rick for letting her husband win and Rick replies, ‘He’s just a lucky guy’, which, on the face of it, refers to the gambling, but, in Rick’s mind, means that the husband is ‘lucky’ because his partner truly loves him.

See the media today doesn't want people to develop or have an ego, but you need some sort of ego. It helps you grow, understand things, live. Social media has really hurt us has people because now everyone can be a keyboard warrior. But really you need to think before you reply or comment on stuff. Ego helps you grow, over come things, fighting spirit. My favorite guitarist was Randy Rhoads no real ego, but he knew that he was a great and talented guitar player, but his ego was in check. You can have a big ego but it is how you let others see you that matters. I think first responders have a big ego because they risk their life for us but they keep it in check.

Thank you, and yes, we all need to be heard, we need to connect with others who share the same experience, the same pain, to know that we are not alone in ours.

So eloquent Chris-this work is essential-raising the vibration, affirming spirit and intention, the reciprocity of forgiveness (it starts in each heart) and expansion of compassion-daily practice and choosing again with each slip from what you know to be true: This is how we make a life that can weather the lessons we chose to learn here in Earth School. As my beloved Anne Frank wrote: “I still believe people are really good at heart.” If that young woman could live in that love, who am I to ask less of myself. I honor her each time I honor my spirit and the souls I meet. I love this episode and will rewatch and share. You have done the work; you are a Master Teacher. And I am grateful your words are in the world. (Wow. A comment essay!) x

These folks are special because I am not sure I could do it because it is so heartbreaking to see people suffer.
