It is easy to be thankful and grateful for good things that come our way. But what about the negative things? How can we be thankful for pain or difficulty?
For me, physical pain from being in a wheelchair is an indicator that it is time to shift my weight, sit in a different chair, or lie down for awhile. Otherwise, I might get a pressure sore, as is the case with many people with paralysis - they can't feel that pain and that can lead to worse and serious problems. Thankfully, I will never experience that - because I can feel physical pain.
Same with the inner life. If something is painful to do - or it hurts when you don't do something - that is an indicator that you may need to shift the way you are doing something, or, to resume doing the things that keep that emotional pain at bay.

Thankful for you, Chris! 🎸 Great analogy of divine discontent as rumble strips on the highway, a needful annoyance to guide us from much greater difficulty. ♥

I'm really listening because this is the crux of the biscuit (and I have no idea where I first heard that, I've just been mentally referring to it most of my life.) There are lots of silky ways to spin this stuff and many positive, groovy t-shirts, but you nailed it with the gratitude-- you have to drink the whole potion down to the roots and stems and be grateful you can still swallow and breathe and count backwards even if it burns and your eyes water. As you said, pain is the gift that (not only keeps on giving...ouch) but that keeps us aware and alert and compassionate and present. It's best to get on the old metaphorical knees every day because there is no measurement of good without bad---or, as my pal W. James said, and I've no doubt shared it before..."Faith is doubt." As you said, it's easy to be jolly when the world is going your way; the better plan is to be jolly even when it isn't--especially then, because every word and every deed and every thought is registered and returned, wherever that path up the mountain began. I admire you and your 32 (and counting) record of no pressure wounds/sores--wow. Plus, the upper body strength which I know feeds your freedom and your posture and your voice and chops and mobility and pursuits and accomplishments and future dreams. To live with chronic pain and act with intention and kindness is a measure of grace that humbles and inspires. And then you just let the old podcast roll out of your head and onto the Tube. I like the Anvil story a lot-- ain't we lucky we get to go after it again...and again... We get a sun in the morning and a moon at night. How cool is that. The in-between, the "mean-time" and the dark night-- it's got some juice that old divine discontent. It keeps us revolving and spinning and one step deeper into the present moment and out of it again. We are so lucky that we get a fresh start with every breath--and that we can't breathe into the past or into the future--only into the next note. (I'm sure grateful "Chris" is right here on the Jersey side of 55)--ha! xxoo
