Awesome stuff. Based on having seen all your run downs, it seems like CJGJ is ideal for coverage but possibly catastrophic in run support. Relying on your 20% missed tackle rate S to be your free hitter feels suboptimal!
Agree to disagree. Just like with weightlifting, the best way is to use only your back and jerk it as hard as possible. With regards to blocking, the same applies. Stand straight and upward, with no knee bend, and lunge on run plays. For pass plays, obviously, stand even straighter and absorb the defender’s weight right in that spinal column. 😏 (This vid just popped up on my feed, and thought it was a new one, ha. My stupid sarcastic remark is a year too late.)
I'm concerned with the Safety group. Ask NFL talent evaluators about Reed Blankenship. Greg Cosell and Adam Caplin both say Blankenship isn't a starting-caliber NFL Safety, and there's a reason he wasn't drafted, even after putting up good numbers at MTS in college. Also, he was extended with backup money. His foot speed is too slow, and he isn't an interchangeable Safety like Fangio prefers. He's a decent 3rd or 4th Safety. We need an upgrade this year, while Sidney Brown recovers from ACL surgery
I agree with the Interchangeability issue I do not want to see reed Inman coverage at all. That said I do believe that he has intangible abilities that would make him a real asset if he can have limited responsibilities. Jenkins versatility meant McCloud didn't need to be. I think Adam intentionally focus on very objective parts of football to evaluate and that makes him great and consistent but also underrate certain players
If you’re going after a Super Bowl. Not signing someone like Simmons is a crime. One year deal until Sidney Brown is up to speed. I don’t see any downside.
Awesome work boys! Appreciate the time and attention in all these videos. I like our safety group and I agree with Nick that DeJean probably won’t be playing too much back there I really like his fit inside where he can use that physicality closer to the LOS. Hopefully Brown is back early I think the defense could really use his juice.
It doesn't really have anything to do with this season, but I'm glad you touched on the Kevin Byard thing. It seems like he hasn't really lost any face with the rest of the league, and everyone acknowledges that it was our defense that was the problem. Also, I imagine Safety is the hardest position to be dropped into a new team on (defensively speaking). I really wish I could've seen what our defense would've looked like last year with a competent coordinator, even if it were another year of Jonathan Gannon. This team is too talented to underperform that drastically; We really fucked up bringing Desai in. Thanks for keeping football in the front of my mind this summer. Keep up the great work!
I think he goes outside cause inside almost always ends in missed blocks lol I feel like all of his bad decisions are based on his past experience with a Giants line
I'd agree if Breece Hall and Derrick Henry, who have had similar horrible OLs, bad QB play and overall lack of talent around him, didn't rank in the top 10 (often top 3) in all these same metrics. The reality is, Saquon has always been a superior athlete who beats people with his athleticism. They tend to be players that try to bounce runs outside or outrace defenders. The problem is, Saquon doesn't have the same burst & top end speed he used to have to do that. He's trying to outrun people instead of using pace and movement to set them up and he's getting caught more. He'll have to adjust his game as he ages.
@@PhillyFilmRoomdo you think his supporting offensive weapons could have anything to do with that? He’s going to be on a loaded offense now(top 5 or 10 line, top 5 or 10 receiver duo, and a good QB)
Saquon is traumatized by bad blocking. That could easily account for certain metrics ranking low. I think any running back would start getting too creative if there’s no blocking.
I don't think Dejean is going to be a safety, he's a cb, and I think the Eagles drafted him to be a cb, preferably an outside corner that can also play inside, similar to Kenny Moore. Reed CJ and Brown are a competent safety trio. I am not opposed to Dejean occasionally playing safety in big nickel
I think most fans see that he's an undrafted free agent, white defensive back, and they just don't understand that he's a good player. He's not elite, but he's a solid steady safety.
Best ability?... AVAILABILITY. IF dude don't play much over these next 2 years, my man is DONE. Folks ain't paying for you to lounge in the jacuzzi and ice bath!
I think better players around him radically changes how those missed tackles looked. There were many plays a ball carriers feet were stopped behind the line of scrimmage but there was noone to finish the tackle and so it went for a big gain.
I could see Ringo taking the other outside spot opposite Mitchell and DeJean sticking inside. Kelee just has all the size and athleticism that lends to real deal potential. And he’s still so young!
Assume the starting safeties are Blankenship and CJGJ. The CBs on the outside are Slay and Mitchell, and the the slot is Rodgers. CJGJ gets hurt: who do you feel more comfortable starting next to Blankenship, Brown or Dejean? Blankenship gets hurt. Who do you feel more comfortable starting next to CJGJ, Brown or Dejean?
In all scenarios Brown over DeJean. DeJean has never played safety. The level of communication and understanding of EVERYONE'S job on the defense is night and day difference from playing corner. If you haven't seen the Blankenship video I did, I highlighted the little things the safeties have to do to make sure they're even lined up correctly. That stuff gets overlooked by most fans because it's easier to see which players are bigger, faster, more explosive, etc. but if you only watch the game on TV you'll miss the other stuff that matters so much at that position. And that's just the communication aspect, haven't even gotten into the fact that techniques, coverage roles and even seeing the field from that perspective is different. Maybe DeJean can come in right away and show he's able to handle all that. But he'd be an extreme outlier to switch to safety and play a lot as a rookie. I think DeJean plays nickel mostly this year, maybe some safety packages to get him matched up on a specific player or something. But the safety transition likely happens after this year if that's even the plan. The way the team is constructed, they don't need to force DeJean into a safety role.
I love this kid. People say he can't tackle but they need to remember he was a rookie. He definitely isn't scared to blast someone. His twin brother is a RB on Cincinnati and he is pretty good too. I expect him to be a fan favorite and a good player for us for a while. Go Birds 🦅🦅🦅
To be fair, he missed a lot of tackles in college too. But Jessie Bates is a good example of a safety that missed a lot of tackles in college and early in his career and then improving. Sydney should be a good one and a fan favorite
Definitely hurt everyone. Plus rookies always have a learning curve (plus he was gonna be asked to play a position he didn't play nearly as much throughout college
I really want to see him on the field so we can see him grow. Dude could become an elite safety but it's going to be hard to get playing time with the guys ahead of him. I love and hate all the talent we have in the back field now. There's so much young talent I want to see but unfortunately they won't see the field and eventually they'll go on to be great elsewhere.
Yeah somebody is gonna be unhappy that's for sure. But injuries will surely happen and the depth will be great then. Competition should make for a much better unit next year regardless
I don’t think people under how good this kid is. Dude is literally the fastest guy on the field that can play safety and nickel and he plays old school football. Once he gets healthy and get his tackling awareness and fully learn how to play the safety position, mark my words- this kid is gonna be a future all pro safety
His potential is pretty darn high -- it will be interesting to see how far good coaching can take him. We probably won't know for another couple years.
Really interesting point about the new hip-drop tackle rule; that never even crossed my mind that it might affect how players are valued based on physicality. You guys have really knocked the Safety evaluations out of the park. This has been the most entertaining position to watch yet. Can't wait for the full pod
I think you'll love the full pod, we really got into the weeds on what is asked of the safety position in Fangio's scheme and how that room might materialize in the future.
Most ACL tears aren't looked at that way anymore unless it's a compound injury like Teddy Bridgewater's or Nick Chubb's. You are right that they should have talked about it a bit more though. He tore his ACL 6 months ago, so he's still going to be rehabbing through the pre-season (which means he's not developing) and is due for a down year.
ACL injuries are a 6-9 month recovery. They've gotten pretty good at them. Kupp and AP are great examples of players that tore their ACL and came back better. Kupp was 1.5-2MPH faster on the GPS after which is crazy. Also helps that he's a younger player dealing with surgery than an older player. I'm not gonna pretend to be a doctor, but from previous injuries usually it's the guys that have other additional tearing to other parts of the knee that have a harder time recovering their form. He'll play in 2024.
I think Brown ends up being a starting safety once he proves hes 100%. Hes gotta be better as a wrap up tackler, but im excited for his development under Fangio
@@EaglesXsandOs Oh, you should be; it's back-of-jersey level imo. Definitely a top tier one. But to incorporate a Sufi/Persian meditative practice into a Syd breakdown is really impressive.
First, crossing routes are man beaters. That's why defense defend them by trying to buzz a safety down to the opposite side of the field. I can also show plays of C.J. and Sydney not keeping up with crossing routes. Second, he didn't really get exposed by them. He got beat once against the Commanders when he was forced onto a WR due to a blitz and had no inside low hole player to help leverage the route to. People keep saying Reed is too slow and then clamor for us to get Justin Simmons (18.6MPH top GPS, 2023) when Reed's top GPS time was much faster (20.4MPH). In fact, Reed's top GPS time (21.0MPH, 2022) was faster than Simmons top GPS time of his career (20.6MPH). Reed ran a faster 40 too. Point is, people are making too much about his speed. Simmons obviously had a very successful career while being one of the slowest safeties in the league. Every player has weaknesses (and yes, crossing routes are a weakness for almost every safety), but Reed has more than enough athleticism to excel at safety and he made a ton of plays this past season as well.
