This channel is about qualitative research, including qualitative research design, qualitative research methods and qualitative data analysis. I also post content related more broadly to science, research and academia.
I am an experienced researcher, academic tutor and research consultant who has worked for the universities of Oxford and Edinburgh. I am passionate about research and my goal is to share my knowledge with students and professionals worldwide
I just discovered your channel and I really love the way you explain things, its so easy to understand and follow. Also really enjoy the funny bits haha
Is that academic ethically to put the chat-GPT as tool which help our analysis in our research report or research article just like others analysis tools (nVivo, atlas.ti, etc)?
Thank you for this content. I would say that I definitely learned new techniques to present the results of a typical thematic analysis. Most importantly, it was very useful to see how you explain your main ideas by giving an example from your actual work. Good luck.
thank you for your information , please make a video on focus group discussion if you have time . if you don't mind let me ask you some questions about FGD . 1. what is the unit of analysis in FGD ? 2. how can we analyze the data that emerge from FGD ( there are different ideas in FGD , and there are a lot of codes and themes in FGD, so which theme is going to report ? 3. is maximum variation with in the group or across the group ?
I don't have it - it was just a sample text file. If you follow my Facebook, I will be releasing my second ebook this weekend - in that ebook, I will include a template for reporting qualitative results
Hy there. Just had a concern. I am also using Bard/Gemini for my literature review. I am asking specifc question and it is giving me relevant details with intext citation along with page numbers of the retrieved text. I am not directly copy pasting the text but understanding the text and writing on my own way. Is it ethical?
sounds like nothing wrong with what you are doing at all, you are just using the tool to explore the literature more effectively and then you are doing the rest of the work
I don't have one specific solution to this, you'd just need to find a way to indicate them somehow, if not by colours then by different fonts, sizes, etc
Thank you dr. Kriukow because I really learned a lot about qualitative method from your videos while I'm doing my dissertation writing . you're method of explaining is easy to grasp. i was so overwhelmed then with the transcriptions during my data analysis, but watching your other videos enable me to process it.Yes, you're right that validity of your findings will reduce biases when you go back to your participants and seek their opinions. I did that with an Indigenous community, and this makes me more confident of my findings. Hopefully, my panel of evaluators will be convinced. thank you so much.
Thank you for taking the time to comment, and I am really glad that you are enjoying my content! Hearing such feedback always adds me motivation to keep doing this! Good luck with your examiners, I'm sure they will appreciate the steps you took to enhance validity (especially through member checking - in my opinion one of the best possible ways to do it)
hello, I have 2 sets of participants in my qualitative study. How do i handle data from different participant sets and with different interview guides in the same research project? Should i make different codebooks for 2 sets and then compare in the discussion section or is there any other way?
yes, more often than not I would have two sets of thematic frameworks, but this depends on many factors. In any case, I usually start coding separately and develop 2 frameworks, later I sometimes decide whether I want to merge these two frameworks or keep them separately. Regarding the presentation of results, I have other videos in which I talk specifically about this. you can organise the results chapter in many ways
I’m planning to apply for a job and this is the first time ive seen selection criteria is used. i’m extremely confused on how do you address the selection criteria in a CV. i mostly see experience in CVs are written in bullet points. But I notice selection criteria are usually addressed in a form of essays? (if you get what I mean) So im confused on where do i address these criterias in the CV. is it under the experience section? not using bulletpoints but an essay instead? or is it a seperate section. Can you give some insight on this bc I’m stumped. I can’t find any proper examples on the internet :(
if it's not part of the application itself (sometimes you may have an online application and then be asked to respond to these criteria in a box), then I attach a separate text file to my application, even if not asked to do it, containing these responses
Hello Dr! Thank you for the content you shared! It is really helpful, especially for qualitative research beginners, as me. By the way, did you change the name of your GPT assistant?
thank you for the feedback! The GPT assistant apparently is still there, if you search for things like "Kriukow" and "thematic analysis". I am a bit confused myself as I ended my paid ChatGPT subscription, and I thought this would eliminate the associated GPT bot, but I actually found it listed with other custom GPTs, so it is there somewhere :)
The idea of qualitative research, and grounded theory specifically is to arrive at new theory based on data. I tried to use it a few times. It does not work for in depth qualitative coding. ChatGPT has the tendency to find “reasonable theory” based on the historic training data. So you will likely not arrive at new rigorous insightful theory.
this is why you should definitely control the whole process, and I would definitely leave the theory generation to a human, I agree. I may only, if anything, use GPT's assistance for coding (provided that, again, I am overlooking the process)
Thanks Dr K. You have shared a very good video on keeping us on track when it comes to pulling the findings together for a clear purpose of making change in the world. Thank you!
Hi, this was so helpful. Thank you! Can you explain how to extract word comments neatly to a coding table? I tried many ways but somehow macros don't work on my mac word..
