I'm guessing they could actually get closer with the captures if they didn't need to make everything tweakable.... On the positive side.... Because it is so tweakable, you can actually tailor it to your sound, way more than a significantly more static machine learning capture. I'm tempted to check this thing out just because it seems cool... It's not perfect but it does sound pretty good.
I'm interested in getting the Neve 542s because of videos like this... but I think it's a lame marketing gimmick to call it "tape emulator" at all. I've BEEN through bouncing my digital mixes to tape and back into my computer -- it does NOTHING good like so many people imagine-- with a good tape machine you're lucky if the return mix sounds just like digital mix, and not obviously worse and just a waste of time ... and even then the best tape machine bounce will for sure have less bass, not some "bass bump." They sound have marketed these as something else

ty for making these shorts. they are informational, motivational and inspirational! i personally really appreciate the insights you've shared. Thank You!
What do you think using this as a mastering compressor on mostly EDM tracks ... ? I know, VCA, SSL etc. but this one has that factor X in it for me. It's like a heavy train moving ... Do you think it's too much of a stretch? It has all of that different compressor settings and FET is not so "slow" (as for example optical, or tube etc.) for mastering that has to have some attack and release time to glue things up so that mix dosen't jump around (pump) like a crazy cat ... 😄
It's a great comp, but honestly not a first choice for EDM. And definitely not for mastering. This is a mixing comp, fuzzy and warm, you're gonna lose some punch on transients. Go for a VCA
That type of people in the majority are loosers. Because when you are concentrating on your goals your 100% time is on your target! So if you have time for this bs that means that this is your career!! To judge others!😉 Great video David and great advice! 💪
You've got a great studio. How the hell can you work on that little monitor though? LOL I'm getting older and need to see better. I threw a 47 inch HDR tv on my system and man everything looks gorgeous now.
Thank you! Bigger screen=nasty reflections. Fortunately I have 10/10 vision so it's not a problem for me and the screen is on a movable arm so I can grab it and hoover it over the gear and closer to me if I want to
@@mixbustv I went to the store to get a new monitor and looked at the TV's and they were less reflective than the overpriced computer monitors. No Joke. Next time you go check it out. They'll fit on your monitor arm too. I'll never go back to a regular monitor again.
I'd like you guys to try a sleeper mic. The Sure KSM8 for only 400 bucks is pretty amazing. You might be very surprised. I use it through just a DBX 676 and everyone that's used it by me was pretty impressed. Because of the way it's designed, the vocalist doesn't have to worry so much about being in the exact position proximity of the mic too which helps capturing a lot smoother on volume.
I hear a lot of terrible low end whoosh artifacts coming out of most of these plugs. Tried a lot of em . If you use a 4k monitor most of the older ones are kinda useless. These type of plugs seem to slow your productivity way down because getting a good tone seems to take a lot longer because everything is a huge learning curve. Sometimes too much is too much. In my opinion the visuals are kind of a mess. From bypass to on there is a lot of times a few second waiting period to hear the differences too. Thats with all the plugs because of sampling loading times. For me modeling type plugins just work faster and better. Just my opinion.
Hi David, I am currently subscribed to PluginAlliance and I'm considering going back to the subscription I had last year with Slate Digital. Do you think it's a good idea? Last year, with Slate Digital, I have the impression that the plugins sounded much better than those from PluginAlliance. On the other hand, PluginAlliance has such a huge amount of plugins, some of them fantastic, others not so much, which confuses me a bit. Do you think the consideration of going back to Slate Digital plus SSL and also adding some Softube plugins like the Waze could be a good idea? Thank you very much, David.
Agreed. Contrast it’s important. Also, strategic use of effects like delay, chorus, doublers, ADT, and imagers (DrMS and Vitalizer MK2 for example) can help, too.
I am really in love with this compressor, from what I have listened here on web. Unbelievable unit ! Do you believe that I could combine it with Drawmer 1976 the 3-band Saturator on master bus ? Because both add color... what is your opinion given your experience ?
This is one of the biggest things I learnt when I got mentored by an experienced producer, he would turn the knobs all the way up to understand the effect and then settle somewhere within. Then he would go around the tracks top to bottom tweaking them for possibly more subtle flavour as usually the first strokes are rather broad.
