I have an injured snapping turtle ( wildlife origin). I need a rehabber. This turtle was bit by a dog earlier today. This is a 6 inch long turtle (shell measurement front to back). The shell has two punctures. No bleeding. Otherwise this turtle appears healthy. I cleaned the punctures as best I could do with saline wound wash, and Vetericyn antimicrobial spray plus plenty of room temperature water rinsing. The turtle seems alright as far as behavior seems to indicate. Just needs time to heal up. So here I am needing appropriate housing to house this guy to heal up for later release so the turtle can go be a turtle 🐢.

So would I be able to do this in England? It can get down to around minus 5c in winter some days. As long as they are buried they won’t get frost bitten? Thanks
@chelonianranch
@chelonianranch 7 месяцев назад
It’s possible, with the right set up. With that being said, you’d have to make sure that your greenhouse enclosure stays warm enough that they don’t freeze. I’d start off creating a greenhouse and then testing at one winter without a tortoise. Keep an eye on the temperature inside. When, in doubt, bring them inside.

My painted turtle had improper lighting and now seems to have shell rot but some parts of the shell looks like there is at least 5 layers of shell but they aren’t coming off. Any idea on how to fix it?
@chelonianranch
@chelonianranch 8 месяцев назад
Sorry to hear about the condition of your painted turtle. Does the turtle have adequate basking area to get completely out of the water? What is the turtles diet? More importantly, I could probably help if I saw a picture of the turtle and the condition it’s in. If you go to my website, there’s a contact me page and you can email me. www.chelonianranch.com

I have a rescue turtle who was living in filth. I’ve had her for two weeks and she’s shedding. She’s 18 years old. Is this normal that she’s shedding because I thought she was funny grown?
@chelonianranch
@chelonianranch 8 месяцев назад
It’s most likely normal. If you see fresh new scutes under the ones shedding, then it’s a good thing. Because the turtle was previously living in filth, it is possible that she didn’t grow properly, and now that she’s in your care, she’s getting the chance to.

Thank you for watching! I need to make a new video as I have adapted my set ups, a little bit differently now. My cold frames are a little bigger, I add a mound of dirt inside so the tortoises are above ground level but still buried for better drainage in case water gets inside, and I always put hay 2 to 3 feet around the outside of the boxes now.

Given the proper light and water quality, is there any additional treatment that would help? I over filter my tank/keep up with cleaning and water changes, and use standard reptile uva and uvb bulbs already. Still have the retained scutes on my midland painted turtle
@chelonianranch
@chelonianranch 9 месяцев назад
A basking area is essential. Make sure there is a platform or area for them to get completely out of the water to dry off. I put a 100watt basking bulb above my platform and I do not use water heaters. Makes them get out of the water to warm up and bask.

You definitely get it colder there, with being closer to the lake. Depends on your climates low there, but I wouldn’t chance it with just a cold frame. On extremely cold nights, I’ve used a low powered heating pad on the side. It doesn’t keep it warm, just above freezing.
