We house our Russian Tortoises, Hermann's Tortoises and Box Turtles outdoors all year round. Although all three species that we keep here brumate during the winter months, we do have to take a few extra precautions for the Russians and Hermann's tortoises.

Russian tortoises native range has far colder temps than we get here in Indiana!

Nice video. Been looking into keeping our Russian in his outdoor enclosure for the winter. Looks like you have it figured out.

Thank you for watching! I need to make a new video as I have adapted my set ups, a little bit differently now. My cold frames are a little bigger, I add a mound of dirt inside so the tortoises are above ground level but still buried for better drainage in case water gets inside, and I always put hay 2 to 3 feet around the outside of the boxes now.

I live in Mi so I know all about winter. I to nervous to keep my Hermanns outside in winter. We have a tortoise table they stay in. I was thinking about giving less heat though to encourage more napping

It definitely gets colder in MI than here in Indiana. Our tortoises do well outdoors over the winter here.

Hermann’s will do fine in most of Michigan if setup correctly. I have a few Hermann’s and Russians that came from northern Michigan and a few from Minnesota. All have always lived outdoors.

I would be scared to trust. Just last week we were down in single digits with negative windchill factor.

I'm in Grand Haven and have kept my Hermann's outdoors year round for years. I just make sure she's buried and have a large pile of pine needles (about knee deep) over them.

I wonder if that would work for Northern Illinois.

You definitely get it colder there, with being closer to the lake. Depends on your climates low there, but I wouldn’t chance it with just a cold frame. On extremely cold nights, I’ve used a low powered heating pad on the side. It doesn’t keep it warm, just above freezing.

What about the water saturation and muddy dirt inside the cold frames? That's my fear
@chelonianranch
@chelonianranch 8 месяцев назад
I did have that issue once before. I made the cold frames bigger, mounded the dirt up inside and added hay around the exterior. I’ve improved my design and hope to do a video soon.

What's the coldest temperature they've survived, particularly the Herman's tortoise. I have a Hermann and I live in Columbus, oh and while the winter's are usually mild we usually get a week or two below zero.

He gets down into the negative temperatures in the winter time here. It’s very important to have a winter cold frame though. Next year I’m going to make the cold frames, bigger, and place hay and straw around the outer edges because my tortoises like to bury themselves near the edges of the box.

So would I be able to do this in England? It can get down to around minus 5c in winter some days. As long as they are buried they won’t get frost bitten? Thanks
@chelonianranch
@chelonianranch 6 месяцев назад
It’s possible, with the right set up. With that being said, you’d have to make sure that your greenhouse enclosure stays warm enough that they don’t freeze. I’d start off creating a greenhouse and then testing at one winter without a tortoise. Keep an eye on the temperature inside. When, in doubt, bring them inside.

Hi I'm in the UK, and my 3year old Hermann has escaped in to our main garden. We have spent days trying to find her with no luck.. Will she survive the winter? I'm guessing she's buried down somewhere.. 😔

I’m sorry to hear about your Tortoise. I keep mine outside during the winter, however, I never allow them to freeze. Even if it buries in the ground, it probably will not survive, freezing temperatures, but nature is amazing and you never know.
