I think the "gear doesnt matter" crowd needs to realize that you need some minimal baseline of gear to really do photography. And that point is often lost. Like you need some kind of light to do portraits inside, you need a microphone to do video, you need a lens to make a photo.

I'm pretty sure this is the first video of yours that I've watched. The first thing I did after watching this vid was give it a like and a subscribe. I truly enjoy your shooting style. Your images capture the feeling of what it's like to be there. I'm glad that you concentrate on photographing the emotions of your subects rather than concentrating on the rule of thirds, framing the subject, or whatever rule a technical photographer might harp on. Honestly it took me several minutes of looking at your photos to even notice that you threw some of the photography rules out the window. You seem to understand that the most important rule of taking images is finding the joy in the moment rather than some rule that so many photographers seem to insist that we observe. Thank you for sharing, and I intend to watch more of your work.

I had this come up during my watch later... while editing photos. And the one direction I took to heart directly was the idea of challenging the viewer intellectually. Sadly I am not doing much photography anymore - but I now want to take this approach for next time. Ask a question with the photo. As I have a lot of portraits in front of me, there isn't much questions to be asked. So maybe I engage differently next time. pack a wider lens to avoid doing too much portrait

For a single-prime-lens-only situation, definitely, I’d pick the Sigma 45mm f2.8; it is affordable, very small, high performing. I use it with the S9, a fantastic combo.

I think anyone who is a father can connect to this video. I happen to watch your movie while we are on a family vacation on the rugged island of Corsica. And I had a very similar experience just yesterday, trying to discover a path through the maquis (the bush in French) with the kids. Simple thing, yet, a nice experience together. But hey, your daughter seems to be a very strong character at the age 9, something tells me you'll have your challenges as a father :) (in a good way of course!) . All in all, it was great to see something more personal from you. People are probably not only following you for professional photos, but also for your special lifestyle, your way of living, so yes, we are interested to see how this life stlye looks like behind the scenes.

It's a beautiful video with amazing scenery, great editing, so many angles and it's nice to see you and your daughter having this moment together. I don't think you need to post these on a different channel, unless you wanna rebrand yourself as the travel dad influencer or so😅 just put these in a specific playlist. But keep on posting. They are cool! And also, I say it again: as you are one of my favorite educational resources, I would love to have a workshop from you that covers filmmaking, editing, cutting etc etc :) i know you are a perfectionist and this will take a while but I am sure many would love to see it and learn with you.

Your comments about Auto ISO and having incongruous settings to get the shot in the moment, seem counter-intuitive. Why not set to Auto ISO by default and take it off as the situation calls for it?
@mitchellkphotos
@mitchellkphotos 23 дня назад
There are many ways to do this. Yours is a good idea, but I do feel there's more fiddling to do if change the AUTO ISO. Remember, it's all about NOT losing that moment. Any little extra step and you've lost it. Of course, everything is worth trying and experimenting with, so I might try this at some stage.
@Patto2276
@Patto2276 23 дня назад
I don't understand the point. There's no reason to limit yourself to one lens! Get a small sling bag, just big enough for a couple lenses, and take both or whatever makes sense for a given situation. For me, sometimes it's a 24-70 2.8 with a 28/1.4 and/or 58 1.4. Sometimes I swap out the 24-70 with a 24-85 3.5-4.5. Sometimes it's just a 35 1.8. And othertimes ...
@mitchellkphotos
@mitchellkphotos 23 дня назад
Sometimes you only want to take one lens. Other times people can only afford one lens. Also - why stop at 2 if you're talking about more than one? 3 is better than 2 and 4 are better than 3. That's the point. :)

You are absolutely right, for the kind of photography, back tilting screen is perfect. I am really sorry that my Panasonic S9 has only a primitive left protruding screen which in itself makes the camera twice as wide and catches attention. The most recent Panasonic camera, the GH7 has dual hinged screen, this should be the standard on all camera above $1000

GX9 with the 14mm lens is the camera and lens I use for like 95% of my photography. Being able to put it in any pocket is what enables my photography in the first place. Sadly for about a year or so, the built in flash is broken. and I haven't send it for repair. And next week the festival is coming up again - so I will only be doing photos during the daytime. I havent considered an external flash yet. To get a but more interesting, I have a collection of really small c-mount lenses that were made for 16mm moving picture. And some kd them have really unique qualities to them. Plus they also fit in my other pocket just fine.

I've used a 35mm 1.8 and Nikon d750 almost exclusively for the last 10 years and get where he's coming from. 35mm is the best all-around travel lens imho. I have two concerns about this train of thought though before I end up buying the same gear: 1. Why not just use a cell phone? I don't like the idea of going "backwards" in terms of image quality because the gap is growing more and more narrow in quality between pro level cameras and cell phones so why accelerate this by stepping back to a mid-range or micro 4/3 camera? 2. If it doesn't fit in my pocket then it may as well be large. If the micro 4/3 can't fit inside a pocket and go with me everywhere then I may as well just accept that I have a big heavy camera slung around my neck and go with a big full frame camera. I don't know, I'm struggling to find the proper mirrorless "upgrade" from my d750.

I might be a bit late, but here are my feelings: 1. gear doesn't matter (I for example skip all gear videos by Ted Forbes and unsubscribed channels that do exclusively gear stuff - like Kai, Petapixel compared to their previous channels) if you want to make gear related videos, make them gear agnostic. More about technique and skill maybe? not sure there is that much to talk about that is applicable to all levels of experience. and viewers might not be (travel-)photographers themselves. 2. make what you are passionate about - the audience will show up if you are passionate about your videos and can tell an exciting story. There are enough examples of highly successful youtubers that never catered to "the algorithm" (replace that with "your audience" - as that is what is modelled) and still don't use thumbnails for example. Be as good as this. 3. you are telling *your* story. that includes for example you making videos about your truck - there was zero photography involved. Still a story that had my hooked.

Sony has excellent primelenses (for creating 2-lens combo for light setup/travelkit). I usually travel with 16-35/2.8, 35/1.4 and 24-105/4. I would really like to see 24-105/2.8 from Sony. But, for the original question: If you need to pick just one lens, it would be 35mm. Started from Sony-Zeiss 35/2.8, switched to Sony 35/1.8 and ended up to 35/1.4.

16 years ago I bought my first DSLR, a Pentax K100D super 6mp camera. Over the years I added others to my collection of Pentax cameras, i started event photography with the same cameras and several years later I added my first full frame camera, a Pentax K1MkII. I purchased this camera as it was different from any other Pentax cameras and it became my main camera for events that being said I also paired it up with a Pentax k3 of different years ending up with the K3 MKIII. When Sigma stopped supporting Pentax cameras i decided to incorporate other camera systems in to my collection. I ended up with all my Pentax cameras plus a few from Panasonic, Olympus Fujifilm,Nikon one Sony A7 ii and a Canon EOS 90D, they cover full frame, APSC and micro 4/3. I have photographed many different subjects and the only thing that I have not been involved in is Astro photography. Every camera system has its strengths and weaknesses, and every photo is not takin at high ISO. So unless you're a professional photographer a full frame camera is not necessary. Most of my photography now that I have left event photography is done with APSC and micro 4/3. the thing i learned along the way is that using the proper lens and good glass is more important than people realize. As far as Depth of field goes, the lens selection today that is available for APSC and micro 4/3 will allow you to shoot with shallow depth of field with out the size of a full frame camera. My go to camera for landscapes is any of my Fujifilm cameras, XT5, XH2 or XT3. i still use other camera for a bit of variety but if you can only get one camera body a good APSC or micro 43 camera will be fine, my choice for travel and photography where I want to pack light or take photos while waist deep in water is a 4/3 camera.

I use the viewfinder for several reasons, I prefer to use it when the light is bright and the screen looks washed out, I prefer to use it for sports and wildlife, when I have to shoot quickly, photographing events. The only time I use the screen is shooting on a tripod or handheld high overhead or shooting close to the ground. I moved from point &shoot cameras to my first DSLR when they started removing the viewfinder from the cameras, so for me I prefer a camera with a viewfinder and tilt down screen for photography.
