This is an awesome video... not many content makers go into security overlays and specific sub-domains! Question though...if you were going to expose Immich say to a few family members android phones would you trust a CF Tunnel? or would you set up tailscale on their phones and insist they VPN into your home network?
Thanks! In my opinion, a VPN would be better for that. I'm not sure how the uploading/downloading of files would be in terms of the Cloudflare TOS, but even outside of that, a VPN just works well in scenarios like that.

I wish Synology provides better hardware, if they do they will be unstopplable. I had a Qnap and had to return it, I want something to just work, that is why I ended with Synology. But I am very unhappy with their hardware and the big profit on selling us very discontinued hardware parts (cpu, etc) so expensive and on top forcing us to their hardware extensions that cost x6 any other brand. I whish UGREEN (or any other) gets better in terms of software at some point, that will force Synology to release better hardware.
Synology M.2 2280 NVMe SSD SNV3410 400GB $149 VS SAMSUNG 990 PRO SSD 1TB PCIe 4.0 M.2 2280 Internal Solid State Hard Drive $109 2.5x More Storage , and 35% less expensive for the Samsung Drive Synology Tax ? Better Drives ? , I know you might have to run a script to get Samsung Drive to work. What makes Synology Drives better ?
It's a Synology tax like you said and the only "official" option that exists. There are unofficial ways to get it working, but if you go that route, just google your NAS device and check which speed the M.2 slot runs at. Most are Gen3 I believe, so buying a Gen4 device like the 990 Pro is a waste of money.
I first went with the Samsung drives but caching performance didn’t seem all that great so I picked up some used Synology SSD’s to use in my E10M20-T1 10 GbE card. You can find these at BH photo for a nice discount used and they have a solid return policy if you want to try a few options. I did notice much better performance myself and things seem snappier even though the performance test results show the exact same results on my RS2818RP+. Results will definitely vary based on your PCIE slot so try to just find something on the compatibility list. What’s funny is I couldn’t run Synology NVME drives in my 1619xs+ so I have 990’s in there after wearing out some 500Gb 970 EVO’s
Thks & if you have time; ??Could you compare performance of a large NVMe cache vs pool?? Really though, a 24/7 home NAS is designed primarily for reliability & CPU performance is a low priority. So if at-all possible it's wisest/bestest to off-loaded heavy CPU processing to regular computers.
Cheers Frank.. Great vid. Does the same apply with the plex data? Just a case of moving it over? As in have to uninstall etc? Or can I just change it to ssd in edit?
hah I expected some kind of clickbaity way to warn users about not filling storage array over 80%, which usually is the culprit for slow disk I/O performance :D
I found Photo Mobile and Photo Backup on Apple App store. It seems Photo Backup need subscription. Just wondering what's the difference between those two apps? Thanks.
Thanks for the review. I was trying to decide whats the solution i neee and waw between multiple options mainly nextcloue and synology. It seems synology is what i need. Thanks.
the shure sm7b will retain background noise free recording 15cm/6inch away from source, and much much further than that, if you are recording in a low noise environment, you do not need to be licking the mice :P just distance yourself and add gain accordingly, it's got PEEEENNNTY gain headroom to :) youre mouth will end up permanently frozen in a 30deg angle on youre face, if you continue like that haha :P thanks for all youre videos!
Our restaurant and hotel needs music and I'm hoping the Synology 1522+ we just got will help us. We use Sonos currently and all the managers go to Spotify to stream music on it. I am hoping for another solution as Sonos has many connection problems.
What an interesting video with interesting solutions Frank. Thanks! ... Something I did for a friend of mine that works with extremely large graphic files is I setup 2 raided NVME drives as his host drives that he can move files onto/off of quickly using 10gb NIC and then have the spinning drives do a sync to/from the NVME drives hourly in the background along with snapshots. This allows him to move / make changes quickly and work over the network right from the NAS but keeps it properly back-up copied using the spinning drives in their own slower RAID configurations. He works with a select amount of files per day and will move them from the spinning drive to the NVME before working with them for the day. It's an interesting setup.
If you were starting with a brand new NAS, would it make sense to install the NVMe's first as Storage Pool 1 so that all of the apps ran on the faster storage pool and then install the spinning platter HDD's as Storage Pool 2 to store the data that may not benefit from the faster drives ? Or do I completely miss something fundamental here ?
It shouldn't matter - you can change the setting to default to a certain volume if you'd like, or even just have the system ask every time you install a package.
Been running +20 docker containers and a HomeAssistant VM in my 500gb WD RED x2 RAID1 NVME pool for months now and not only is fast but obiously the HDD pool isn't being used all the time and the NAS is way more quiet. Had to set it up via ssh because my DS720+ doesn't allow to use the NVME for volumes, but so far 0 probles. I only have to run the script that allows the NVME pool to be created automatically everytime DSM updates (i have it so it runs on the boot everytime). As I said, appart from that, works like a charm.
One thing to clarify is that if you want to uninstall Docker and install it on a different Volume, you DON'T have to delete all of the settings. This will retain the data in the volume it's currently installed on (in the example, /volume1/@docker), but will NOT carry any of your containers or data to the new volume when it's installed. However, you'll have a rollback plan if you'd like.
Hi, thank you for your tutorials, I like them very much. I followed this instructions an with configuring network for Virtual Machine Manager I broke my macvlan for pihole. This is configured as a container on my Synology followed your instructions. I have no idea how to fix
@@WunderTechTutorials Thank you, that was it. The name changed, but didn't get it to work yet. The network is not listed in networks. Have to try it tomorrow again.
I have an error playing some videos using HW acceleration (QSV). But if I select none HW. The videos that cannot be played, are now fine to play but the high CPU spike occurs. May I ask if there is any solution for this, thank you. PS. Run Jellyfin on TrueNas scale
Oh my god. I was going in circles, trying to set this up, and I didn't realize `No TLS verify` setting. Your video helped me get unstuck. One nice thing that might be a good addon here, is how you can setup separate port for SynologyPhotos (LoginPortal > Applications)
Seems good but when I copy files to the folder on my Mac, the creation dates get reset on the NAS! So if I have a set of photos from a couple days ago, copy to that folder, the NAS will show the creation date as if they were taken in that moment. I can’t use it simply because of this, now I can’t order photos by date taken without somehow finding the metadata inside the file.
Don't forget everybody, don't bother choosing a higher performance lower redundancy pool if your network isn't even fast enough to take into consideration that difference
Overall, good video. However I do take issue with all of those login attempts being characterized as attacks. Unsuccessful logins are closer to a defensive posture probe than a landed hit (attack, where you have lost something - eg: control of something or access to something). Successful logins with follow-on effects would definitely be an attack. Every once and a while you'll hear some security pundit wax on about how they view port scans as attacks... and I bin those comments just as I do unsuccessful login attempts. Login attempts and scans are similar to a burglar testing all the windows, doors and pet entries, for easy access... it doesn't mean they broke in to steal the TV. Muddying the distinction between probing (indicators of possible future attacks or planning for an attack campaign) and attack behaviors really doesn't help educate the average viewer. That said, I can accept the the title of the video was meant to draw more clicks but the commentary kept banging on the same theme (attack vs probing activity).
I see what you're saying, but in my opinion, I'd still personally classify it as an attack. A port scan is slightly different and I'd agree in saying that it's more of a probe than an attack, but a lot of IDS/IPS systems will block port scans because the next stage is generally some sort of targeted attack. Using your example, the burglar is walking around checking for open doors to potentially try and rob someone - if the door is open, the chances are high they're going in. The act of checking for open doors is the probe (port scan), but once they see it's open, the chances are high they're going in (attack). For this scenario, we're past the port scan - they know the port is open and they're actively attempting to gain unauthorized access. If they successfully log in, I wouldn't classify that as an attack - I'd classify that as more of a breach. They have access, can steal data, encrypt files, etc. In the context of Synology attacks, it generally revolves around ransomware which is why I titled it like that.
I run Plex without issues on 918+ . Up to 4K streams without problems. If you want multiple streams with encoding then you need something more powerful
Looking to upgrade DS119J, main feature is for family to view photos on mobile (mainly, via app) in a similar way to Google Photos (where limit is now reached. Love the ease to find and view on Google Photos, so would you say Synology Photos is still the best alternative option? Also DS223 or DS224+? Other question on VPN, forgive my ignorance, but have setup openVPN on synology vpn, is that classed as OpenVPN then?
Oh my god. Why didn’t I know about storage analyzer…I always asked myself why Synology does not have a tool like this…lol…thanks a lot! That’s awesome!
Top explanation. Thanks a lot. Client cert not required Phase was not explained by another RU-vidr. Are there any risks oder disadvantages to add this phrase?
Thanks! The risk is on the Synology side for not using it. Synology doesn't allow client certs so all that does is bypass the check. The reason it doesn't popup on other options (potentially) is because they use a cert, so yes, it's technically a problem, but no, the line isn't the problem - it's that Synology doesn't use it.
I gave up on Synology, its hardware is very poor, the UI design has become backward, the APP has not been updated for a long time, and it no longer brings surprises to home users. I have now purchased UGREEN NAS, it has a more beautiful interface, better hardware, more powerful APP, and there are AI functions inside, which is easier to use, and a lot of surprises.
nice list! I'd probably put DNS to same lowest category like VPN - because it's better done elsewhere, and especially you don't want DNS down when updating/rebooting NAS, Video Station and Audio Station - frankly the main advantage for casual users is, it works flawlessly with QuickConnect (both mobile apps and web interface) - being able to play own content privately over internet effortlessly is unmatched (unless configuring VPN, proxies, ddns etc...) - for people without public IP address from ISP, it's a godsend, in such cases, it's a top tier category for sure, File Station deserved to be one the list - just like Video and Audio station it can be easily accessed via QuickConnect (again, both mobile apps and web interface), but also can serve as simple photos backup from mobile devices (for users that don't want Photos app), and is even able to play videos and open various files (without need of Video Station or Photos installed on a NAS at all)
Great video - as always. I have a 923+ 3 bays in one pool and the 4th second pool. I have snapshot replication set up but have seen 'replication' (underneath the 'snapshot tab' - what does replication do - I only have snapshot set up and am now wondering if I should also have replication set up too ?
Thanks! The replication option allows you to replicate snapshots to a second Synology NAS, so if you don't have a second, you won't be able to configure it.
When i looked for an Android app for note station it showed me ds note which is "made for an older Android version and not compatible with your device". Thus was at least half a year ago. Checked again now - same. Synology does not care about it's soho/smb users. Enterprise is all is about today. As for the rest of recommendations, they are spot on. Except maybe for Synology drive, which is great when it works, but then suddenly it hiccups on some files, and you never know why. A pain in a small business environment.
It's funny because I've heard of people running into Synology Drive problems but I've been lucky and never ran into any problems. I have had certificates expire and had to reauthenticate, etc, but minor stuff in the grand scheme of things. Never a scenario where files didn't sync or anything like that.
@@WunderTechTutorials yeah, survivor bias is like that :) particularly when the errors are happening to a smaller number of people, perhaps due to how they name their files, or something equally obscure...
This might be a silly question (and I realize these videos are a couple of years old). Can you have an OpenVPN, Wireguard, and Tailscale set up on the same pfSense firewall? That way clients who are able to use each type can still connect. I plan on configuring a GL.iNet router with a VPN to my network, and I'm not sure what it uses (but I may also want to configure other devices with Wireguard and/or Tailscale in the future).
I am coming from an older Synology NAS. It was past time to upgrade so I started looking at Synology to stay in rhe family, but was very disappointed with the current offerings. Ended up with one of the new Terramaster models and I am very happy with it.
quick doubt, when doing the whole subdomain and reverse proxy step, if my internet is down and I am connected to my local network, will i still be able to access the containers with their respective domain names because I setup local DNS? Or during that downtime, I will have to use ip-addresses on my client to access the web-ui's?
@@WunderTechTutorials thank you, also is there a rule in ufw where I can add my whole ip addresses range in lan? All my devices are currently in 192.168.100.x . Currently after building an Ubuntu server homeland, each docker port I have to manually open in ufw
I have two Macs; and I have never been able to get Active Backup for Business to even set up, let alone work. So I ended up using Synology as a destination for my Time machine backups.
for anyone considering Synology Notes.. don't.. you already have synology nas with synology drive to sync your files Just pick local editor (preferably with markdown support like Obsidian) and place your Notes folder within SynologyDrive synced folder... you will have much better experience
@@WunderTechTutorials Thank you for answering so quickly. I will do that, but I was under the assumption that when you used SHR you could mismatch disk size without losing space
man ur content is really great, it would be nice for you to add a icon on somewhere floating on the screen to mention wat ur onto.A time cut work as well
I followed your steps carefully, but unfortunately, I got stuck on getting into my NAS even though am signed in to Tailscale website. what to do, I can't access my NAS
