What are you using your NAS for?
@denxos
@denxos 2 месяца назад
Aside from storage/backups, I'm running a Linux VM, a media server and a number of services in Docker containers.
@nosurname9652
@nosurname9652 2 месяца назад
Docker containers, mediaserver, back-up place ofc, torrent 24/7, personal cloud for photos, aggregator for clouds like Gdrive or Onedrive. Its a nice way to share BIG :) files with anyone via public links as well.

Paperless NGX - amazing for document management, installed as a Docker container.

Wanted to try it as well, but found out that Syno drive have tagging system aswell so its possible to sort documents there. Is Paperless NGX beter on it?
@NickGreenDC
@NickGreenDC 2 месяца назад
@@nosurname9652 Paperless has several benefits. It does OCR which makes any word searchable in any document, as well as having robust tagging options. It is working great for me in a small business environment with document sharing, permissions etc etc.

Excellent video Frank! I would also throw in iSCSI that allow the NAS to become a datastore for VMWARE ESXI for example

Here are a couple of ideas for utilizing virtual machines : 1) if your workplace has an app that everyone needs to use but only occasionally, run it on a virtual machine and allow everyone login rights. That will save the cost of a licence for everyone. 2) If you need an app to run 24/7, run it on a virtual machine. 3) If you need to run Linux ( or just try it out ), run it on a virtual machine. 4) If you are regularly trying out apps on your Windows desktop and then deleting them, create a Windows virtual machine and run them there. ( I also have a QNAP NAS and do this there.) Take a snapshot before installing the app; test the app; and then revert to the old Windows instance to avoid problems where Windows does not fully uninstall unwanted apps.

ABB is excellent as a client but man , it’s been 3 months that I’m trying to boot on my PC and my laptop their usb boot rescue device. On my PC the ABB boots but there’s a error and it says there’s not network device driver. On my Lenovo laptop , the usb key doesn’t boot. I will open a ticket at Synology for sure :) my first real problem since December. A small one but everything else is perfect and rock solid.

That's one of my fears. I've restored machines on a test basis and they've always worked, but needing it to work and it not working isn't something anyone wants to deal with. Ultimately, I think if it's super important, you need to test it (using a separate SSD/HDD) to make sure it works. My machines generally aren't that critical so if the data is in ABB, that's good enough for me, but I understand the other side of that.

@@WunderTechTutorials I already have a plan B, I use for many many years macrium and I created a shared folder on my DS923+. When I built the rescue usb stick with macrium , everything was built with my current PC including all the drivers from windows 11. Everything is working , I tested a full restore of my PC with macrium with my Synology as a network depot . Works as expected. I don’t know what Synology is using but Macrium is using WinPE.

@@WunderTechTutorials My fear as well. I've only tested a restore a few times but I think the process is a but complicated and can have issues on different hardware. A step by step video tutorial covering most restore scenarios would be helpful.
@WunderTechTutorials
@WunderTechTutorials 2 месяца назад
@@EnriqueReyes I'll add it to my list - the biggest problem I think are generally drivers and that's the hardest thing to isolate because it's different for everyone. Either way, something I can look into!

I think it's a great tool and like that Synology started including their cameras with a license...I just hate the licensing costs. It makes it a really hard sell in my mind unless you use Synology cameras, but it is absolutely a great option and one that a lot of people love!

Have you looked into the Synology BeeStation? Just came out recently - sadly, no redundancy but it's basically designed for what you're explaining.
