Agree that these people’s use is disingenuous - after all, they don’t appear to have Jane Birkin’s air of insouciance and bohemian lifestyle. Their approach is calculated and comes across as inauthentic.
I moved from a city with multiple Hermes stores to a country with none. It has been so very painful to try to get anything from them. They are indeed designed to service face to face clients. I have a question: I used to shop in a Hermes store in Singapore. My profile apparently was deleted after 5 years of absence (I relocated to another country) due to a digital safety policy. So I suppose to build that generational track record in a store, you have to regularly shop in the same store unbroken.

I spend a lot of time in SEA, the Singapore boutique near the Marina Bay Sands is always stackeddddd I always wondered what goodies the local clients could get out there 😍🥰🧡! 24:40 I am really enjoying your discussion about the "Jane Birkin - ifying" the Birkins. You are so right. But the fact that this needs pointing out is my biggest surprise. It is sad to think that Jane Birkin herself will be disappointed to see how her name has been used for things she never stood for. I heard she was sick of being associated with what the Birkin bag has become when she was still around. Hermes only made this bag for her because she was carrying a basket as a bag and ended up with her stuff all over the floor during a flight with the CEO of Hermes at the time. Or so the stories I've heard about it. Personally, I love the Natural Vache and Barenia leathers the most from Hermes. So I am on the spectrum of using my own Birkin bags pretty casually and very ruggedly. But to think that this is something to be enforced is beyond ridiculous. I am so glad I do not have TikTok. 😅 Thank you for this conversation.

I think simply put, Birkinifying your Birkin simply means using it in the utilitarian way it’s designed to be used. If you want to preserve your bags in a pristine way, no one has the right to tell you, you can’t. I personally think black or dark colored Birkins look better when they’ve been “lived in”, the lighter colors not so much. I have a B35 in trench. It wouldn’t look great Birkinified 😂

hmmmm, i always thought "jane birkin-ifying" your birkin meant personalizing it for your lifestyle, whatever that may be. So if you're MaryKate you abuse your kellys, if you're Victoria Beckham, your birkins look pretty pristine - both ways are valid because both ways reflect the user's values / personality / lifestyle and neither is capping for a clicks on social media. Putting groceries in your handbag (whatever handbag it is) is just dumb and, as you said, performative. That's not what they are designed for.

A practice that started as a means of removing the bag from underneath its connotations of status and wealth and bringing focus back to its robust quality and usefulness, has quickly become yet another vehicle for signaling affluence. And now we have ppl putting groceries into a leather handbag , which IS dumb, and not practical!! Glad you see where I’m coming from ❤️❤️❤️
What winds me up are the people who baby their bags to the point they hardly use them or are so preoccupied when they do they should really have stayed at home .. often because they are concerned with the resale value. It’s a bit er petit bourgeois. Look, there’s a tradition in french high fashion of irreverence .. that early balmain show where the mannequin dragged her fur coat along the podium upsetting the ashtrays into the laps of those watching on the front row. It’s chic not to care .. insouciant. That said, I think you tread the line .. look after your bag, respect it, enjoy it as it ages but above all use it. I wear my h belt all day every single day whether I’m clearing ditches or going to a fancy restaurant. For one thing it brings the cost per wear down to the minimum 😀

For me the most natural thing is to use my bags without unrealistic reservation and pair that sense of familiarity with my lengthy experience with these bags to land somewhere between taking care and consistent use! So far it’s gone well enough for people to think I carry my Birkin in a vacuum sealed container 😭😂 it really isn’t the case
I think Hermès and Jane contract specified receiving regularly a Birkins….so she can actually ripped it apart and be sure to receive a brand new one……we cannot buy a Birkins every year, unfortunately……

That’s the scent of my current shower gel! I haven’t had any trouble with leather soles. I did once put espadrilles still damp from the rain back in their clear plastic shoe box and they grew all this green mold 😬🫨🙄
My Birkens are beat up and I love them that way. My Kelly is nicknamed Mary Kate & Ashley because she’s beat up the way they carry their Hermes bags. Wear your bags the way you love❤

I completely agree with you. I find it kind of silly when people make videos putting VCA jewelry and beads and knick knacks on their bag because I doubt Jane sat down and threw all that stuff on her bag at one time. She collected that stuff over time and could get those bags for free whenever she wanted. If I spend my hard earned money on Hermes bags I’m going to take care of my stuff like I take care of everything else in my possession.

Exactly I agree. I let time put wear n tear on my bags. I am not careless. And for a bag to get messed up that bad it needs to be 30 years old and those Birkins and Kelly’s are hard to come by so people are taking fake ones and roughing them up and calling them authentic and trying to be like the Olsen twins ! these RU-vidrs have fake collections but they would never tell you have been dealing with luxury bags for over 17 years and can authenticate, etc. and I had to Unfollow a lot of social media people in the luxury community because they are liars and can’t keep it real ❤and I do not scratch my bags up. I have bags that are extremely old 10+ years and vintage Chanel 26 yrs old 17 yrs old and they look like they are brand new. Same thing with shoes 👠 take care of your items and use them for sure! ❤

I really love that you have a realistic understanding of and appreciation for your housekeeping staff. Your realness is part of why you're one of the few luxury people I stick with. I personally love the look of a loved and lived-in Birkin. Because it *is* just a bag. But I also love and appreciate people who endeavor to keep their Birkins pristine, because they're also art and investments! Both are true for me 😂 I don’t want to beat my Kelly up but I also decided that for my own sanity I couldn’t obsess over keeping it perfect. I use (not abuse) it within reason but I enjoy it because it is an iconic and beautiful design and the slouch will come when its meant to.

I completely agree with you with the “Jane Birkin-ifying”. I do believe if someone is posting on social media “Jane Birkinifying my Birkin” it’s pretty much a contradiction. To shoot, fresh produce going into the bag, edit and upload - goes against the ethos of “Jane Birkinifying” my bag because the ethos thereof is to be nonchalant.

It’s a status symbol and nothing more. Carry it and love it. Baby the bag if you want as that is your choice. However Hermes hypnotized people into valuing a couple strips of leather and a couple pieces hardware is straight up voodoo(especially now that we know how easily and cheaply it’s made). Jane saw it was a bag because that’s all it was and like everything else people emulate what they see. Marc Jacobs using his as a beach bag and the Olsen twins using theirs like laundry bags and door stoppers. At the same time those individuals are the only reason the bag is popular with anyone under 65.
Hi 😁 thanks for watching and for your thoughts, I do though, suspect you might be conflating the Dior x Italian government civil complaint with Hermès which has had no such credible accusations of cheaply produced goods, soo far while it’s clear that there is a wide profit margin for these bags, experts and clients alike attest to the high standards of labor and materials that go into these goods till this day. Certainly you’re right to say hermès bags are a status symbol but I believe that is a side effect to their well earned cache as a mainstay in the “expensive but worth it” pile. Nextly, I’d argue that the reason Jane Birkin wore her bags the way she did, besides the fact that they cost a very small fraction (adjusted for inflation $1800) of what they cost today, and besides the fact that she was receiving them for free as compensation for her namesake, Jane Birkin’s style especially as she reached her golden years became much more casual and uninhibited by trends and a desire to appear polished, her bags reflected that, they reflected her style and like all style it’s a personal choice and by no means a benchmark for other people’s reference, similarly Marc Jacobs used his bags that way when he happened to be the creative director of Hermes which as you can imagine gave him considerable access to their wares likely at no cost. As for the Olsen twins, they’re are just fab and they carried I can’t change that… let’s call them the outlier. But to conclude I love to dissect these and other positions with my viewers, it gives me perspective and helps me pass my own position through open critique! Dialogue is a vital part of earning credibility for any opinion 😬🫡
I have to disagree with you on the Birkin bag. I think it's just a bag, a tool to carry things, and nothing more. I think the cult status it has achieved is wonderful, but it's still just a leather bag. I don't think people should carry it to signify their social status. If someone wants to use it as a grocery bag, more power to them. If someone wants to keep it pristine as a symbol of something, that's their choice. Missed yah!

Hiii lawr17 and thanks soo much for watching! So I think the confusion you’re experiencing here is coming from your combining up two separate groups into the general basket of “other travelers”. So firstly, group 1 as far as my sensitivity for being obnoxious is concerned, is in respect to airport service workers (particularly security) these people who are at work shouldn’t have to be burdened by looking after my bag any differently than they would anyone else’s, I find it unbecoming to make a scene over a handbag with a line of people in security, so I make an effort to avoid the likely hiccups. Now group 2 “the girls” which is itself a reference from black lexicon meaning, a subset of a present population set distinguished by like traits to the narrator, in this case my referring to other hermès or high fashion enthusiasts, who are strangers quite rightly, but many of whom till the present day have struck up conversation with me with my bag as the anchor point 😁. To conclude, I certainly can understand how from an observer’s point of view enthusiasm for expensive things may appear to be for the sake of signaling status but for many people myself included, that is simply a side effect to a hobby I am lucky to have access to, I hope this helps you see where I was coming from, I’ve found that most people who’ve seen this video already have ❤️
@@TiwaDidThat Oh no confusion here and no explanation needed. Question though, where do you set the bag organizer while you're dust bagging your Birkin? I assume your other luggage, since you probably don't want the organizer touching anything dirty/the floor as well. And you must travel at some non-crowded airports, because I will still have people bumping up against me in first class or pre-check lines. Cheers!
So I typically take the dust bag out and bag the bag before removing the insert, which I place directly into the basket/tray, as far as crowding I rarely if ever have suffered physical contact from strangers for lack of space in the queue no matter what class I fly, and as long as I’m brisk and well practiced in my process for preparing the bag for the scanner ppl behind me don’t seem to mind😅 but I suppose it’s case by case, nevertheless I’ll cross my fingers to avoid such a scenario 😬😵💫
