I LOVE Mexican Numismatics and I share what I learn on my 2 RU-vid channels: The Coin Box (Eng), and La Caja de Moneda (Esp) I try to get really cool close-up shots of beautiful coins and share something you might not already know about them, I do my best to share a little bit about the history behind the coin and it's design. So go ahead and subscribe so you don't miss my next video!
Great video, I really enjoyed your purchases. Do you have a website where you sell coins you have extras of or do you sell on eBay, by what name? Thanks.
Wow! Great purchases my favorite is STILL the Pillar Dollar Proof set - a monster! And on the end of the spectrum the tiny 1/4 Real coin and 1813! Amazing they could make a coin with that level of detail way back then - huge credit to the Mexican Mint especially compared to what the U.S. Mint was producing at the same time.
Thanks, Dan, I really LOVE tiny coins. They're so miniture and yet have such detailed designs. I'm amazed people wouldn't just lose them every 5 seconds, haha, I'm sure that explains why so many of them are holed.
Awesome, glad you enjoyed it! I have to agree, people say Libertads have too high of a premium, but when you compare vs ASEs, their mintages are tiny and even ASEs have high premiums (which is pretty crazy).
Hello New subscriber and really enjoy your informational videos. Last year I purchased a 1987 proof 1 oz silver Libertad in its original government packaging. I noticed that on the rim / edge of coin all the way around is completely blank and smooth. Normally they have the usual libertad inscription . Do you know if this is normal for the 1987 proof. Thanks for any information or help provided.
@philippaul7812 that's awesome, thanks for subscribing! Congratulations, it sounds like you own the "smooth edge" variety of the 87 Proof Libertad. I have yet to own one in my collection! You are correct in that most 87 Proofs have the typical edge lettering, but apparently there's a group of them that have a smooth edge like yours. Very cool!
Hi Coin Box. I have been into coins for about a year. I have fallen in love with Libertads. I am wanting to start a collection. I have a few questions if I may? 1. Where is your go to place to find mintage figures? I found on Reddit in a Libertad group a chart with mintage numbers, I would like to just verify. 2. Are there other places beside EBay to find current values and pricing of Libertads? I am wanting to learn what the fair value of them is. Thanks for all your very educational videos. Have a great weekend!
Great questions, thanks for asking! 1. There used to be a pretty reliable chart on wikipedia within the libertad page, but I'm not sure how accurate it is anymore. Felix from Bullion Cat maintains an updated libertad mintages list that I believe he shares on his Instagram: BullionCat 2. If you have facebook I would suggest you join these two groups: "Libertad Lovers Buy Sell Trade" and "Everything Libertads. **pre-Columbian artwork and more** banco de mexico". Both of those groups will help you get a better idea on pricing and you can also usually buy libertads cheaper there than on ebay. Also, be sure to check ebay "Sold items" filter to see past sales and get an average from there. Thanks for subscribing and for following the channel!
Wow, you got some great coins! Those Mexico '86 sets are a good source of uncirculated coins, I got an awesome variety of the 20 Pesos 1984 out of one, with some very obvious lathe circles. Also, be aware that those sets (and the bank sets too) are easy to open, so sometimes the coins you get are not UNC, but circulated.
I agree! The coins in these sets tend to look quite beautiful. So far, the sets I've bought have had original coins in them, but I know what you mean about them potentially being replaced.
I would suggest joining a couple Facebook groups; Libertad Lovers and Everything Libertad. Also, stay in touch with Mexican coin collectors vía Instagram
Again, where do I go to purchase Mexican silver coins too. I love Mexican coinage. I'm slowly learning more about Mexico's insanely cool and beautiful coins. I would love to find a really good and reliable source for Mexican numismatics. PLEASE HELP!
It's hard to find everything in one place, which is why it's good to have several option like Facebook groups, Instagram, ebay, and coin shows like the USMEX coin show in Arizona in October
Great video I’ve watched it over and over, because of the love I have for Libertads thanks for all you do for the coin collecting community keep it going.
I could be wrong, but at this point I feel like the Low mintage is already factored into the price on these as the premiums are extremely high on reverse proofs. In my opinion there are other Libertads which I think are somewhat undervalued and have greater potential for price increases in the future, like some proofs and BU varieties and other key dates. But that's not to say they are a poor investment, they are certainly highly sought-after!
Was a ble to snag a 1991 type 2 for 200 when he was asking for 275. I got 2x 1998 one sent for grading came back MS67 the other is monster toned in the album.
I've never actually ordered directly from Banco de Mexico. I've tried, but they don't make it easy. I sure with it was as easy as it is to order online from the US Mint!
Great question. I tend to be very careful about which coins I'll dip. I don't think I have ever been able to remove an old fingerprint by dipping, unless the print is on some toning, and not directly on the original surface of the coin. The only success I've had removing fingerprints has been with using acetone, but even then it really only works well for new or recent fingerprints. The print on this medal has been there for years and I think it'd be nearly impossible to remove without damaging the medal.
Thanks for your feedback, I really appreciate it! I'm not sure the 1998 would do well with a dip because besides the toning, it seems to have a "milky" layer as well, which I don't think would come off with the dip.
Hi J. I love the toners. The reverse proof is my favorite finish. My Libertad collection is one of my prize collections. I was lucky to get an early start on collecting Libertads. Where do you get current prices? Thanks.
I would love to see your collection some day, Donald! For current prices I usually get an average of sold listing on ebay, Facebook, and dealers that I know. It's usually just ballpark and not intended to be taken strictly since there are so many variables and different factors involved when it comes to price and current market value.
I've found a new Libertad information source! They're my favorite coin on side the Germainia's. Thanks so much for the video. KEEP THE LIBERTAD INFO- TRAIN COMING!!!
Oh man, I took forever to find good capsules that fit the thicker older style libertads. I finally found some that I love! I believe they are 40mm, which is why I use the foam ring. I should do a video on them...
Awesome collection, you left me drooling. So it's your fault I had to pay $590 for a 91 type 2? Just kidding, I should have acted sooner. Great video, keep them coming. I've learned a lot from you, thanks.
Haha, sorry you had to pay so much, but the prices on the types 2s sure have skyrocketed! Thanks for watching, commenting, and supporting the channel, I really appreciate it
Thanks! I'm always on the lookout for something special and unique or something that might just fly under the radar a bit. I'm pretty happy with this group. 😊
Haha, I know. I rearranged this list so many times before making this video. The truth is that it's hard picking one over another sometimes. They're all special in their own way.
I don't think they are die polish lines because they cover the whole coin, not only the the fields of the coin, and also because die polish lines tend to be straighter. It could be something to do with the die prep, just not sure what would've caused it. Most likely it's Struck thru cloth or grease or some other material. I'd like to compare it to other 2007s that also have that texture to see if it varies much from one coin to another.
