Some might ask the purpose of this channel and the current goals I'm trying to achieve, lemme give you a list to warm you up on how things work around here: -I talk about SMG4 and surrounding topics. -I'm a bit of an analyst for SMG4, so expect deep explanations of SMG4. -Don't mistake my channel as a "criticism/rant channel". My videos talks about way more than that. -If anything big happens in the SMG4 show, expect an analysis/explanation video from me.
WARNING: THIS WILL BE PRETTY LONG This was a good video, but you still missed a few important things: -The arcs don’t work anymore. They barely change anything for the show, and if they do, it’s gonna be something a lot of people won’t like, like the awful redesigns and the destruction of the old castle. For the most part, they’ve also ruined WOTFI, because now it’s not a funny competition between Mario and Smg4 anymore, it’s just a plot filler event to cap off another boring arc. Also, it’s pretty clear the newer arcs are only made to sell merch. -Let’s be real here: a part of Smg4’s success is from the majority of wacky and humorous side characters that have appeared across the series, like Steve, Dr. Robotnik/Eggman, Bowser, Wario and Waluigi, old Smg3(before he became an annoying anti-hero), Donkey Kong…shit man, I can go all day. There’s a lot of them, but there’s good side characters, and then there’s bad side characters no one likes, like Meggy, Saiko, Melony, that coffee cat woman, and a few others. And unfortunately over the past 4 years, Smg4 has kind of mishandled his side characters whether it’s prioritizing side characters no one likes or ruining the character development and world-building for those same characters. Smg3 used to be the goofy villain that always wanted to mess around with Smg4, but then in 2020 he became an actual villain, and then from then onward he became sort of this pissy anti-hero that tries way too hard to be cool. Oh, and don’t even get me started on Meggy, Saiko, or Melony. At this point, they feel like Hollywood’s “strong female lead” tropes. That being said, not only do actually funny and interesting side characters get neglected, but the ones I’d consider bad don’t even get character development that would make them somewhat great, or they do but it’s somehow botched by Smg4’s creative oversights. For example, Smg3 should technically be permanently residing in the Meme Graveyard, right? Except he’s in almost every video nowadays, and last I heard(I unsubscribed 2 months ago), he now owns a coffee shop now. The same goes for Meggy and Melony, they both have careers(Meggy’s a fitness coach; Melony’s taking up Axol’s mantle as an anime artist after he sadly died of being a sacrificial simp for that awful 2021 Origins Arc) that have been neglected in favor of focusing on unsuccessful arcs. Stuff like this ends up ruining character development and continuity within the series, especially in the long run. -Maybe it’s just me, but I’m getting the impression Mario isn’t what he used to be. For the most part, he’s been reduced to being the series’ version of Kevin McCallister-that one annoying kid no one fucking likes or can tolerate(at the beginning of the movie, at least) or Homer Simpson from the later and most recent seasons of the Simpsons if you want something more simpler. I mean, he’s always been a dumbass from the very beginning, but in the OG videos he still had a conscience, and actually had common sense for many things. I’m getting the feeling the reason this has happened to him is because Smg4 must’ve realized Mario was one of the only reasons that kept the show alive and decided to Flanderize him(it’s a Hollywood term for making a character’s essential traits, in this case Mario’s retardedness, so essential to the character that the character themself ends up being nothing if not defined by those traits) in order to get more views. And for good reason too, the dude’s been on almost every thumbnail for every episode, and he’s probably one of the only reasons Smg4’s newer vids get an average of a million views. I’ve got more talking points, but I’m tired at the time of typing this.

Alright, imma say something that might get everyone in these comments or other people to hate me, but I never saw Mario abuse as… well, that, Mario abuse. Mario has been shown throughout the series to be a selfish, entitled, narcissistic jerk who often cares about his needs. Even when he became smarter, he still cared about his needs and his needs only. And this isn’t me defending SMG4 cause I’m a new fan. I’ve watched him since I think 2014 or so, and I never saw this as Mario Abuse, more so Mario Karma. I feel like this Mario is abused angle got to a point where people take frames out of context and paint it as abuse, like for example, the episode where Mario traps his friends in Pokeballs. They had every right to be mad at him, yet it’s Mario Abuse? It’s odd. But who knows, maybe I’m just babbling. And before some say it, yes. I am aware Mario isn’t evil, he’s an anti-hero. But, he’s still not a good person, sure, he cares for his friends, and helps them fight evil, but in most cases, he’s often the main source of the problem. Now do I think they should make him less of a man child, yes, but I wouldn’t say he’s a victim of character abuse like Squidward.
While I enjoyed past videos like back in 2014 thru 2018 until the Anime arc and Melony’s transformation, the problem that I have with SMG4’s channel as of late is the continued inclusion of Mario and the lack of his development that he had during the Waluigi Arc, and on top of that, they just make him unintolorable beyond anything, not to mention they shaft him for content and puts too much focus on SMG4 himself than what it was originally where it was a Mario parody, now it’s nothing more than a trash dump of wasted potential. I get meta-sense, but a lot of us have accepted that Mario and Luigi, just need to give their positions up to other characters, instead they just keep relying on Mario and Luigi for viewership, which has gotten out of control. Every episode after the IGBP, has made me detest a lot of the stupid things he has included and it hasn’t gotten no better when Mr. Puzzles took over for four episodes, I hated every single one except the fifth where he got his comeuppance. Since the USB Stick origins video I understand why the case with Mario as the Avatar can be explained, which is something they outright forget since the godforsaken Puzzlevision Story Arc begun, and continues to make Mario the butt of the entire show, be it intentional or not. Isn’t the point of an avatar supposed to be if they die, the universe of that series gets destroyed? To me, the It’s gotta be Perfect movie, made it clear that he wants to do original content, he can technically try to do that and not have Mario in it, it really isn’t that hard to do. The Puzzlevision Story Arc has ruined the channel even further because they cannot figure themselves out anymore and the said story arc has overstayed its welcome. I just want a good thing to come out of this, and SMG4 just cannot find and keep said thing, a balance and return to what works and what doesn’t, the modern characters can work if you can write them reasonably and not shaft them when they accomplish something in-universe and still help the main cast. I don’t think I’ll be watching anymore SMG4 after that, I’m done. It just lost their identity and they cannot keep up with a changing internet. Memes cannot carry the show forever. And we just need to move on to another thing if you don’t enjoy SMG4 anymore. Honestly, im just here bc i dont like what they did to Puzzles after the arc. Ive never been a huge SMG4 fan, but i wasnt happy with the decision to being him back so soon. Idk other than that, ive been neutral about the show. I usually just watch it with my friend who is a long time fan and still enjoys this stuff. Guess ill try to consider the future appearances noncanon for my own comfort idk.
I'm just going to throw in my two cents but I am starting to think with all of the character inconsistencies, lore building, lack of other characters like Saiko and Shroomy getting screentime and with how rushed the Puzzlevision movie was I think SMG4 (the show itself) should have a long extended vacation so that way Luke can recharge and when the show comes back he and his writing team can have a fresh approach with the show like make Mario less of a manchild and more or less like how he was portrayed in Stupid Mario Wonder, have Meggy be less cranky for the sake of humor, make episodes with different dynamics like maybe an episode where Karen teaches Bowser how to be a good parent, Meggy and FM having an adventure between old school fighter and new school fighter and maybe an episode where SMG3 interacts with his old Snitch Gang.
SMG4 isnt the channel i subscribed to a decade ago, maybe the landscape has shifted, but i still believe he is still extremely funny. The new videos just feel souless.
Even not watching these smg4 community videos i started to get tired of meggy Like comon you already got sunset paradise leave the long smg4 episodes to the others
The big problem at least to me is the videos are more story based rather then dumb simple stuff/funny shit like mario getting milk i think it makes the channel feel more cringe and unrecognizable then what it used to be
smg4 is a different show than what it started as, there are many that miss the old smg4, me included, but youtube is sadly much stricter than back then, plus every episode is on such tight schedule, so it is nearly impossible to make one that stands out or reaches the quality of the original. I ve got to say, in terms of production, the new smg4 is unbelievable, pumping out episodes every other week, but that has only caused more headache rather than satisfaction, i quit smg4 2 years ago because of excessive episode dose and the lack of amusement it gave me, but sadly smg4 is really just another kids channel now, and by constantly pumping out content for the kiddies they make their money to pay all of their workers and fund the glitch shows. In the end though, smg4 still has potential to return to their roots and maybe spice up the writing and the jokes, but as long as the child demographic is what funds the channel, and the episode schedule is that tight, i dont think it may come back any time soon.
Tbh X and FM are the only Mario recolours that I want to see return and I want to say Enzo but the owner asked Luke and Kevin not for his character to appear so he's out of the question, even though that would mean they would get redesigned.
Do I agree with you? Eh? I feel like you didn't say anything that wasn't true. Yes, it has less story. The Glitch stuff is the only part I don't agree with. I love the quality of Glitch but they barely have more than 12 episodes. (Excluding Meta Runner of course.) Now don't get me wrong, I feel like some of Smg4's work was mediocre but never bad. (Except Western Spagethi. I hated that.) WOTFI 2021 was what I like to call the end of the streak of great stories. Sure revelations existed but that had a can of worms itself. I did really like Puzzlevission the movie. The movie only. The rest of it was mediocre. WOTFI 2022 was okay. The song was catchy but that's how I feel about all of them. WOTFI 2023 was great but it didn't have a strong story. And while I did like the Puzzlevission movie, it felt like it came out of nowhere. Also, I personally hate the fact that he came back because it undermines his movie. I will say I'm still a die-hard Smg4 fan but the show as a whole has gotten worse. It's like the Simpsons now compared to back in the day. I love it but it could've been so much better. Thank you for giving genuine feedback/criticism. There's a non-zero chance Luke sees it but hey good to have it none the less. (PS this is still saying I love SMG4 both old and new. I just think change will create a gap. Either you like the newer or older style more.)
The point of the video isn't even to make an opinion on smg4. All it is, is literally just an analysis of why smg4 has been receiving severe criticism in the newer years.
oh thank god fozzie is mentioned, i can never understand why he wouldn't leave his attachment to smg4 so much while he makes criticisms and despises smg4, one of the main characters in the show
For me personally, I don't like the newer SMG4 episodes is because they slowly began to use more screentime for G Mod than screentime for SM64 and I didn't really like the change and I drifted away pretty quickly.
The thing I don’t like about smg4 was he used to make funny skits back in the days now it’s just stories with just Mario if he wanted to do that it shouldn’t be Nintendo related
I think SMG4 went from "funny mario and other characters getting in random predicaments" to "a group of characters and ideas being thrown around to entertain the Glitch team as they're resting after creating an amazing episode of TADC or Murder Drones", of course it's going to lack cohesion or "timbre".
I believe that they did bad writing on purpose. most of the bad writing came with the puzzlevision arc, in which Mr. Puzzles influenced the narrative by quite a bit, and his shows were hilariously bad on purpose.
The only issue I have with SMG4, is that he doesn't really take a lot of risks/always relying on Mario. Why not make an episode with just the SMG4 original characters sometimes?
I think he has improved, he has improved in animation dramatically, most people are mad because of the design chances for smg4 and 3, I genuinely love the new designs as they are original, smg4 saved me from my own fears so I’m eternally grateful for smg4’s decisions
