Thank you for this video. My grandmother's family were from Galicia. I can only trace records back to the late 1800s. I never knew how desperately poor the region was. She was born in 1927 and I never heard her talk about the extreme grinding poverty described in the video. Her village was near the Dneister River and is now in Ukraine.
from this video I did not understand why I should stop to call myself Lemko, even if my roots are rather from the northeast Slovakia, Presov region, with some Polish-Lemko admixture. i just saw a video telling it is a nonsense, but no real explanation.And please do not forget that the people that identify as Lemkos and consider themselves as a part of Ukrainians are doing it just with a purpose of making a propaganda.Their meaning of life is not to be necessarily an opposite of you.There are different feelings, attitude towards the heritage, so people choose their way.I do not subscribe to the Rusyn ethnicity in Slovakia, as its leader are very often trying to preserve only the folkloric level of the culture, not creating a real nationhood, they tend to be loyal to Slovakia and to not bother that much about the slovakization, while they should be.
The biggest realization of my life was realizing that I've lived my entire life assimilated to the degree where I know nothing about my ancestry, my language, culture, etc. I used to wonder why my family members are dispersed all over Ukraine: some in the West, some in the East, some in the South, some in the central part... Well, it's easier to assimilate people like that... Honestly, very sad...
As a Slovak, I love Rusyns and Rusyn culture! I believe Rusyns in Slovakia shoudl gain autonomy and by any chance if Slovakia managed to get Carpathian Rus, we should form a federal republic

Ukraine is the legacy motherland of RUS and the ancient bloodlines exist today and Putin want to enslave the ancient city's of Kyiv, Chernihiv, Chernobyl etc. He ordered the destruction of historical literature in Mariupol and elsewhere and even just bombed the biggest printing house in Ukraine 2 days ago.

The Poles invaded Belarus in 1919 and took people's private houses for themselves, forced then to convert to Roman Catholic religion and forced them to speak Polish. Many Belarusians are 100% ethnic Poles and 50% inside the same family. When the USSR regained the lands in 1939 the Polish officers who were given Belarussian properties were deported to Northern Russia to labour camps..
Save me your tears. Unfortunately all your troubles stemmed from an incompetent Czar born in 1871 namely Nicholas the Second. The Russian people were the most affected and traumatised first . Then the Bolsheviks gained power and peoples lives improved immensely as the land was shared collectively.Unfortunately a ruthless dictator gained power and the terror began. Russians had it worse than you and millions died in labour camps in Siberia. You at least has the possibility to immigrate to America. Some smart people like Czechs , Poles and Serbs went to live in Trieste where the living standard was the highest on Europe. Unfortunately Germany invaded Russia and Europe was turned into a hell hole and fascist countries who collaborated with Hitler were not looked on favourably by the Russians. The South Slavs who fought fascism howeret were. You can't have your cake and eat it too so goes the saying.And by the way Russians lost 27 million people liberating Europe.
I saw Old Ruthenians nearly lifelike in a museum in Belarus near the Polish border where there is a zoo with lynx and bison. They were hunting with crossbows and had lavish costumes probably nobility. They wore mustaches and no beards and wore feathers in their hats.
You are right. The only people who can decide who Rusyns are are the Rusyns themselves. Many Rusyns identify as Ukrainian. I am a Rusyns who identifies as Ukrainian. Some Rusyns do not. I am happy to identify with my Rysyn - Ukrainian brothers and sisters. Those of you who do not should just go away to Hungary or Poland or Slovakia or wherever you think you will be treated better (good luck!) and become a headache for someone else.
Ruthenian is Latin and English name for Rusyn. So no Ruthenian is in fact from Rus' = Eastern Slavic. And in English for saying "from Rus'" is OLD Ruthenian. Modern Ruthenian is Rusyn. There are synonyms.
