“Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, please welcome to the stage the best f*cking rock band you’ve ever seen … Cheap Trick!”
Hi everyone! My name is Emma. I’m 26 years old and from Illinois. My music taste is all over - from rock, to punk, to power pop, to folk, to blues, and everything else in between. Thanks for checking out my channel!
What is it about the Metro that's so great, anyway? It's my fave venue, too, but I can't say exactly why. It's, like, *perfectly* sized, with *just* the right number of steps going up & an *excellent* blend of vintage glamor & punky decay... or *something.* Any further input on the matter?
I used to have Artful Dodger's HONOR AMONG THIEVES (second album I think) a long long time ago but it disappeared from my collection with the shifting sands of time. I remember it rocked pretty hard and I'd love to find it again.
Looks like some awesome VCLT you got there Emma! Really intrigued by that Big Star record. When I think of Cheap Trick and the Metro I obviously think of Music For Hangovers and those series of shows where they played some of the early albums in their entirety. I would have LOVED to have been there for any of the shows with the first three albums. Happy spinning!
You're welcome Emma! I figured you would like them, hopefully you can find the other two. And yes, many consider 'Babes' to be their best. I'm always torn as to which one id my fav, but I know I consider 'Honor Among Thieves' to be their weakest. Cheers!
🙌🏻 Touched by the Stuff is a weird album title. 😂 Stream their first album before you order it online. It’s good, but very raw. Doesn’t have the same immediate hooks. Some fine VCLT showings here. I’ve heard of Artful Dodger but never listened. I bet that Big Star live recording is great. I’ll probably be posting some more power pop (and adjacent) records over the next weeks. I am still on that kick. I guess it’s a summer thing. Cheers, Emma!
Thanks again, Jon! I think you’d dig the Artful Dodger. I have nothing but good things to say about the unofficial Big Star release. Love the tracks & the recording is solid IMO.
Hi Emma !! I really enjoy all your videos. Thank you, for taking time, to make them. Have you heard of the band, The Shazam ? They are considered, a power pop band. Give the record, The Shazam ‘Meteor’, a listen. Take Care. 🎤🎸🎵🎹🥁
Hi Emma - I was under the impression that The Digital Gramophone ( Jon ) made no sense but I will check out The Motorists. The unofficial Big Star is awesome 👌. That was a great tour & Alex was healthy & happy & of course the inclusion of I Am The Cosmos was an unexpected treat. Alex was on the B-Side You & Your Sister. Take Care !
You selected some great albums . My favourite power pop band would be Squeeze , with Argy Bargy being my favourite album by them . Their East Side Story and Cool for Cats albums are also excellent . Cheers !
I saw awhile back this was going to be coming out and it definitely interested me. Your review helps sell it. You definitely touched on what I find really intriguing, and that is the song choices. Love the selection of songs. Great job on your review here. The Cynz and Midnight Callers are two really grabbing my attention.
Holy cow! Three videos in a week! Who are you and what did you do with Emma? 🤣 Awesome that you picked up Jagger & Richards. Pretty cool JEM released it during their tour. A while back I gave you an album by a band named Lunchbox. I think the title was After School Special. Did you like that record? The reason I ask is the band released a new album about a month ago. Have a great day!
Who is she?!? Lol! Thanks Jim. I’ve just had a lot of videos I wanted to push out. I don’t anticipate this being the norm lol. But I have been having fun. Great strategy by JEM to match it with the tour. Listening to this one is getting me even more excited for my show at the end of this month. That Lunchbox release was great! Thanks for the heads up on the new album. Have a great rest of your weekend!!
@@EightVinylLow Please let me get the new Lunchbox album for you. I wanted to know if you liked the other album so I could get their new one. Not sure when I will send it to you, hopefully before school starts. It won't be much, maybe 3 or 4 records.
Hey Emma! I have the Lennon one, Matthew Street was nice enough to send that to me as VCLT. I'm not normally a comps kinda guy, but the Midnight Callers, Grip Weeds, and Paul Collins might be enough to get me to pull the trigger. Thanks for the info! Cheers!
I saw you posting up some Sloan, was curious how you entered. Me and Hanna are total super fans. One of the great white north’s best. That particular one is so good. I was bummed to miss Matthew Sweet but I got to work with Abe Partridge at my venue and he was super cool.
The Bongos are excellent - Trish got me into them many years ago. Didn’t know James had a new record out. I bet Alejandro was great, I haven’t heard a ton of his stuff but I like what I do know. Haven’t listened to Pokey in a long time but I remember loving the first couple records a lot. Sounds like good times.
I highly recommend digging into Alejandro’s material a bit … I think you’d really enjoy his stuff. He plays the area often. Keep an eye out for dates. He’s worth catching live at least once. I need to keep my eyes out for that Bongos record now. Great stuff.
So glad you enjoyed seeing Alejandro live. I caught the album release/tour kickoff show at Antone's in Austin. It was the first time I had seen Al live since seeing his show in support of "The Crossing" where he had a bunch of special guests including Wayne Kramer. That was a pretty special show. I dig his new album a lot, but I would highly recommend diving into his solo output further, as well as his Buick McKane and True Believers work. I caught him a bunch in the late 90s/early aughts. He called Austin home back then, so he played in town all the time. I was very lucky to catch him at some super intimate shows at The Cactus Cafe on the University of Texas campus. It's a small "listening room" that Townes Van Zandt considered his home club. Nanci Griffith, Lyle Lovett, and so many other singer songwriters cut their teeth on that little stage. Al would pack his full band and a string section on that tiny stage, and they would create magic. The guy can rock pretty hard, but I love when he incorporates stings with his work. He's a really great bandleader. He did that "going into the audience" unplugged thing at many of those shows, and, at one particular show, he and his bandmates set up shop right in front of where I was sitting. They proceeded to play one of my absolute favorite songs of his, 'Last To Know', and I think I literally held my breath through the entire performance because I was almost afraid the sound of my breathing would disrupt the beauty of that moment. Definitely check out the original version of that song, or even the live version off of the "More Miles Than Money" live comp. As much as I like the new album, I prefer the original version of that one, and I also prefer the True Believers version of another favorite, 'Outside Your Door'.
The album before Rhumba Country is almost a part 1 of that record. Rock Bottom Rhapsody is very, very good as well. Manic Revelations is almost a rockabilly record. Check it out!
Awesome haul!! I really enjoy GA-20 their Houndog Taylor album is fantastic. Chicken Shack is a must have for British Blues/Blues fan. Matthew Sweet and Sloan just great modern/90s power pop. I have that Velvet Crush album, I will have to check out Abe Partridge.
Alex is kind of a kleptomaniac. He stole a bunch of parmesan cheese and red pepper flake packs from the pizza joint I shared time with him at. At least you got your record back. That poor pizza place closed. 🤣
Super cool video. That's a heck of a haul. I'm glad you picked up Altered Beast. That is probably the last of the must have Matthew Sweet albums. Very nice you got another Sloan record. I was hoping you would like them. Are you going to see the Rolling Stones when they visit Chi-town at the end of June? Have an awesome week!
The Lemon Twigs album is fantastic! I’ve just seen them live tonight here in Lisbon and they were amazing. Great voices and fantastic playing. Love Matthew Sweet and Velvet Crush!!! If you like power pop and Big Star try to find an album by artists Peach & Lee. A superb archival release of an album that was not released before and is a revelation!!!! If you like Chris Bell, don’t hesitate!!
Awesome that you were able to see them live. I hope to catch a show over the next couple of months. I’ll keep an eye out for that one - thanks for the recommendation & for watching! :)
Cool VCLT from Alex - well, I haven't heard it yet but you make it sound cool. Sloan record looks good too - that's a band I'm only a little familiar with. Being produced by Mitch Easter is just about enough for me to want to hear Velvet Crush. Lemon Twigs have been on my radar too. So many records I want to hear. lol Thanks for showing the records Emma!
Hey Emma! I have 4 Sloan albums, but the only one I love is 'Never Hear the End of It.' I'll have to check out the one you showed. Sam has been trying to sell the Lemon Twigs on me, I'll have to give them a chance. Cheers!
Hi Emma. After watching this video I went and sampled some GA-20, and boy was I impressed! I thank you for the introduction (but my wallet won't). Nice Chicken Shack! The only Matthew Sweet I have is a couple of the covers albums that he did with Susannah Hoffs, and a CD of the Thorns album (would love to have the latter on vinyl but you're looking at £200 plus... yikes!). I only heard of the Lemon Twigs in the last couple of months and ended up buying Everything Harmony which is superb - will check out that latest album. All the very best... Pete
Hey Peter! I'm glad that you went to sample GA-20. I need to dig into more of their material but I really do loveee the one that I showed. I'm definitely falling down the Matthew Sweet completist rabbit hole, so I have my eye on those Susanna Hoffs releases (as well as any I can get my hands on honestly lol). Everything Harmony is fabulous! Let me know what you think about the new one if you get around to listening to it. It's always great to hear from you!!!
