It’s kind of stupid, but I’d actually like to have a 16mm print of this

Been to see both Episodes IV and V on the big screen this week which I have not seen since 97. The special editions just don't compare in any way to the original theatrical versions. I was four at the time Star Wars came out and for those not around then, I dont think anyone can understand the earth shattering impact Star Wars had back in 77. I wouldn't trade those days for anything. It's just a shame that Star Wars will probably never be the 'event' it used to be back in the 70s and 80s thanks to the prequels and let's be honest, the awful sequel trilogy. Also to be fair, The Empire Strikes Back was the last truly great Star Wars film and that was all thanks to Gary Kurtz. The saga was never the same after he'd left.

So the reason for the slight cropping on the 16mm prints is that 16mm uses the Academy rario (1.375:1) while 35mm anamorphic uses a slightly taller 1.18:1. Add the anamorphic factor of 2 and you've got a 2.75:1 ratio versus a 2.35:1. The Episode 4 print looks like a common-top extraction was used to keep the headroom intact, hence why the bottom is gone.

I personally didn’t mind that they added “nooooo!” in there. It really brought the Anakin out of Vader.

Watching the versions where he says "NO" always takes me out of the moment because it's just so unnecessary. The tension is all about whether or not Vader is going to do something or not. To announce his intention before he acts ruins the scene for me. It just doesn't feel true to the moment. The director of this entry I think understood how to execute this scene perfectly well. I understand that George Lucas is the creator of the franchise, but why mess with someone else's work if you handed off the director's duty to them? The dude edited and shot this perfectly.

The intensity of this scene makes prequel palpatine seem like a joke, and I’m saying that as someone who likes the prequels.

I'm 54 and saw this in 1977 at 7 years old. The lines for it went all the way around the movie theater that was attached to a mall in NJ. As you got in line people who already saw it were getting back in line to see it again! Admittedly I fell asleep right after the Sandpeople first appeared and woke up during the trench scene. But the movie had such an impact on me that the binary sunset scene still tears me up to this day.....

These are some of the best comments: we had just stood in line for 5 hours waiting...a seminal moment in my life... it was if every dream I ever had was possible....that nothing else in the movies had been-or has been since...simply jaw dropping compared to anything seen or heard before. It was a quatum leap in terms of special efffects and sound quality...That three minutes took me back forty-three years...there are nearly 5000 comments to this one clip alone. While a movie is not the same as a president getting shot, our country being attacked...this was one of those moments that people remember in almost the same way. What I gather from the comments is that people recall that event--who they were with, how old they were, what theater they went to...I rarely remember what I ate for lunch the day before and I remember seeing this movie like it was yesterday.

Maybe in a way it does sound more profound without the "noooo" but with Vader yelling it, it's a perfect reminiscent of the moment when he yelled "nooo" as Anakin and saved Palpatine, causing Windu's death. The "nooo" signals emotional breakdown.
@DiscoRaptor
@DiscoRaptor 13 дней назад
Nah. It didn't need any vocalisation from Vader, everything we needed in the scene was there. The switch in score when Vader goes for Palps is more powerful than any "noooo".

2:10 If Lucus wanted to make this scene more impactful, he could've simply edited the subtitles to make the Emperor's scream of "Anakin" seem intentional.

2:33 What is that arm Artoo tries to use on the power socket? If he mistook it for a computer terminal, why wasn't he trying to use the arm he normally uses for those? That always confused me about this scene

I hate that freakin' "Nooo". One of the worst additions to the originals and that's saying a lot. This is how it should be. Absolutely perfect. Changing it is an insult to David Prowse's amazing performance.

So many movie theaters played it in stereo mode while others played it in mono mode. If someone who saw it several different times in theaters but at maybe two or different theaters then they’d probably remember the sound differences as time went on. But I still don’t understand the voice alterations and additions. How is it possible that some lines are different though from both sound systems and some were added in 1997?

I really wish we could get a proper 4K UHD transfer of the Original Trilogy exactly as it appeared in theaters with proper color grading, film grain and without any of the 97' Special Edition changes.

I actually think that this Jabba looks better than the 2004/2011 version, which was just downgrade compared to 1999 TPM Jabba. Maybe the 1997 version looks like a different Hutt, not exactly as Jabba (too young), but its still decent.

I saw this when I was 18 at The Empire Cinema in Leicester Square, London - a 2,500 seater cinema with the latest in screen and sound tech. That opening sequence was mind blowing. As the star destroyer lumbered across the screen, seemingly right above us, the whole theatre rumbled - we felt it up our spines. It was a truly awesome experience and still gives me goosebumps.

Notice that Leia is shooting stormtroopers so ferociously that Lando has to remind her to keep going twice. I didn’t consider it before, but now I realize Leia is taking all her rage about Han out on those troopers.

The way Star Wars was meant to be seen. I love the richer colors, the grain, the audio crackling, no "nooo" anywhere to be found. Just beautiful 1983 Star Wars in its original, nuanced form. As a teen when the Special Editions were first released I foolishly thought it was the best thing to ever happen to Star Wars. Now as a middle-aged adult, I see nothing but beauty & tranquility here. A style of filmmaking long gone, and sorely missed. Thank you so much for posting this!
