This is really the ultimate learn from start to advanced lesson. Great way to focus on various strumming techniques without worrying about chords. Also, this piqued my interest in the song. Very interested in how many different lyrics are there? Seems like its one that you just put Liza Jane in various cities and have fun making stuff up. Thanks for a fun lesson.
Hey Lucy! Glad you like the lesson - this is one of those old songs that has lots of verses to pick and choose from for sure (not sure there's an official count/way to play it). The kids love it - they can play it fast so they like to start off by "warming up" with it. WHile they;re waiting for the class to start often they'll just start on their own playing nad singing together - I love it!
Kelly, those children are so fortunate to have you as a Uke Teacher. They have a good head start on me. :-) Thanks again, I learn a lot from all your Videos.
@@adammccoy1062 usually but it doesn't really matter if you hit three or four. Hitting three gives you a bit more of an alternating high string low string kind of sound but I don't sweat it too much either way
Can little kids really stretch their pinky across those frets?!? I envy them if so. I suppose this lesson is more for a banjo uke. I want one because I love the sound, but not sure I can play one when I'm used to playing a much smaller sopranino and sopranissimo ukulele. I love your strumming lessons!
The kids are so "pliable"...and they play sopranos. But to be honest we haven't gotten them to the melody part yet. So far it's just been strumming on the beat and then doing the paintbrush strum. THis year we'll introduce some melody playing to the more advanced kids. These techniques work on any kind of uke - standard or banjo uke. If you like banjo uke but prefer soprano there are a number of companies that make them in soprano and/or concert as well. They are SOOOOO much fun to play!! Glad you're enjoying the lessons!! Kelly
Many ukulele tutorials out there but rarely do any really get down to demonstrating or explaining strumming techniques except for here. Best uke/ banjolele teacher on the internet, all explained in a way to easily understand. Thanks Kelly
"When your foot goes down, your thumb goes down." _notices his nervous leg syndrome while watching the video_ Okay, so I'm guessing I'll be playing death metal during this. =)
Right on, Kelly, I was planning on hitting you up for a video on the old oh Susannah ditty some time ago. I wasn't sure if you had done it but here it is. Thanks
I am actually enjoying your videos I can do fingerpicking styles but like strumming has eluded me. Don't ask I don't know why. However, your explanation and styles seem to be reaching better and I thank you for that.
Hi Amy! I love the banjo uke! They really are a lot of fun to play! I keep finding new ways to do things the more I play around with it which is great - I love the challenge too! Kelly
Hey Kelly! I’ve been watching your videos for a while and was wondering if you could go over the song Calling Baton Rouge. I think it would sound really cool on the banjolele
I find it easier to do the upstroke of the sledgehammer with my index finger rather than my thumb. Should I retrain to use my thumb, or does it matter?
@@janetmichal hey Janet! If it works for you - go for it! I'm not always the most "conventional" player - I kinda do what feels right. As long as you get the same effect and timing and it doesn't affect your ability to do other strums then I'd say do what works for you! Kelly
@@fourstringstrummer Well, that's what I'm wondering - might it affect my ability to do other strums? I'm pretty new to the uke so I'd rather develop good habits now. By the way, I really like your lessons. And thanks for the fast reply!
@@janetmichal if you want to do the sledgehammer strum using your finger coming up that's okay. Eventually when you do other strums like the double strum you may want to use your thumb for the up strum. You could do it with your finger but then it gets pretty "busy". If you can use your finger and your thumb it kind of splits the work load and transition time - probably you'd be able to go faster down the road using thumb and finger.
Very nice. But I wish you would do a basic lesson on your paint brush sledgehammer strum. It's personal as I was taught index finger and after 2 trying months I atill can't get a rhythm going with the sledgehammer paint brush. I'm losing my hair and I don't have much
Hey Steve - have a look at the Live Jam video - info through them in depth ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eU4heoIfmKw.htmlsi=FW9Bt8v7E2r7zn6G
Man oh man Kelly, I can't wait until my Duke 10 arrives, what a beautiful sound. I really want to cut loose with Bluegrassing on the Banjolele. You are breaking out some great lessons on strumming techniques, that for now, I am emboldening on my uke. Watch out mama here come Pierre with some jiggedy up dancing tunes. Cheers fellow Canadian!
Kelly, I am always in awe of your creativity. You have the golden touch with your strumming and melody notes. It gives me something to aspire to learn and perfect. I have come a long way since I began following your tips and lessons. Thank you once again.
Thanks Kelly your tutorials are fantastic ! Please keep them coming. Your channel is helping to eradicate boring mundane uke strumming. You are greatly appreciated !!!!!!!!! ❤
Oh, this is just what I need today! Saturdays are always special as I (and any others) wait for your excellent lesson. Thank you for guiding us on our musical journey, Kelly!
Not only an excellent review… it’s a great overview of all the features a person should think about before purchasing a music stand. I appreciate all the info.
Glad I came across this. Even though I'm subscribed and am supposed to get all your notifications, I don't get them. Thanks for the lesson. And yay for Gordon Lightfoot!
Hi Kelly picking up again. My Banjo is tuned cgda........I tried classical strings to retune, They snapped. Is there any way you could do some chords in the cgda setup.. I've got all your strumming patterns I particularly like the island strum . I know it's a long shot but thought I'd ask. Enjoying your videos as always. Cheers
@@fourstringstrummer Thanks Kelly, one thing for sure I will certainly understand it more with your help. You break things down so well. You make the learning curve a lot easier for me.
@neelkh2 enjoy! I did an updated version of this song recently as well if you want to check that out. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XIxuXohRwOo.html
