Hi Peter. As of today you have four charging options within a 500m radius of which one of those charging options is a DC fast charger at Kingsbury Park. Check plugshare.com as the charging infrastructure is constantly improving. The Kingsbury Park DC fast charger was commissioned in March this year. I probably would charge there if I was stopping through Kalgoorlie again rather than use the overnight street charging.

Hi. If I'm outback I use wikicamps.com.au/ app to see what camping is in the area. Otherwise if I need to charge overnight I look at www.plugshare.com/ and see caravan park or motel with EV charging facilities is nearby. If travelling I book on the day that I will be staying after I know I definitely will make it there, which is usually around midday. Yes I do get caught out with no vacancies from time to time but there generally there are alternatives.

Wth I didn't know you could get a 3phase direct plug charger. Holy shit how come no one talks about this. Basically charge anywhere there is access to 3 phase power plug. Just opens up the ev range in au Soo much !!!

Thanks very much John. You have given comprehensive info which will be very useful to me, owning a Kona electric and wanting to travel long distances! You also seem to be able to plan, take your risks seriously, but relax and have a good time as well! Your detail on charging cables and equipment and the exact locations of charging points is priceless to an EV traveller. I wonder does the Tesla ‘destination charger’ allow standard type 2 cables; so my Kona could be plugged in?

Hi Barry. Some parts of the Tesla charging network is open to non Tesla vehicles. For a particular location check in the Plugshare app where it is clearly outlined. The Tesla charging network where it accepts non Tesla's works with Type 2 Mennekes CCS2 charger ports.

Your series of videos of this trip are excellent for those keen enough to try the trip in an EV. Could you share the total cost of all the various cables and connectors you had to buy to ensure the ability to plug in at every stop? Now the NRMA chargers you used are no longer free, have you recalculated the likely cost if you had paid NRMA's 54 cents per kW up to 150kW and 59 cents per kW above 175kW for ultra-fast charging? At 18kWh/100km, that would cost $10 or so in a Tesla. Compare that to $12/100km in my diesel BMW X3 30D at $2/L and 5.8-6.1L/100Km on the open road. This easily allows SYD/MEL non-stop when driven at the speed limit or 1350 km carrying a single 20L gerry can, which I would carry on an outback trip.

I used a 3-phase KWIK Portable Type 2 Charger evchargers.com.au/product/portable-charger-3-phase-bundle// which retails for AUD$1,280 The provided tails bundle included: 240V 10A connector tail (single Phase) - normal domestic powerpoint 240V 15A connector tail (single phase) - caravan park 415V 32A connector tail (three phase) - did not use 415V 20A connector tail (three phase) - most common 3-phase Also used was a Type 2 to Type 2 EV Charging Cable 22kW at AUD$209. evse.com.au/product/5-metre-type-2-to-type-2-ev-charging-cable-22kw/ The charging landscape is changing very quickly in Australia. Places such as Norsman and Nullarbor Roadhouse where I used 3-phase is now serviced by DC Fast Chargers. Add this to NRMA now charging for their charging does impact cost. You could re-calculate the total cost of the trip using the link in description to the [Syd-WA-Syd Trip Spreadsheet] and looking up Plugshare for each stop.

Hello mate, slight correction to the graph... maybe... The 3p x 16a (22kw) is 78km per hour, not 56km, I'm looking at mine charging right now also The 3p x 16a (12kw) seems to be running at 75km per hour. Making it a 3hr30min charge till full

Yes, great travelogue John. We did a shorter trip (Devonport- midlands- Hobart - east coast - Devonport) last October in the EV6. Charging was easy and we got lucky with no waiting anywhere. In particular the excellent Evie 350kW charger at Brighton is on the old highway and very quiet! By the way, friendly corrections: Ouse is pronounced ‘ooze’ and Launceston is pronounced ‘Lonn-ceston’. 😊

What sort of cables and plugs you carry in order to get a charge anywhere you go? My biggest fear with Tesla is not finding a charging point, it’s the fact it doesn’t have a spare tire, if you picked up a puncture you are stranded.

That said there is over 15,500 caravan parks around Australia that you can potentially stop by and plug in. If you are really struggling you charge from a standard powerpoint. That could be as simple as checking into a Motel for the night somewhere and using a powerpoint from your room (ask permission of course!). The Tesla power management and indication of range left is surprisingly accurate. The fear is not about finding a charging location but more to do with how time inconvenienced you'll be if you intended to plug into fast charging but due to circumstances such as unserviceability of the DC charger you have to resort to trickle charging from a powerpoint. Hi. The charging landscape is changing very quickly. Quite likely if you do the journey across to Perth in a few years time it will be DC fast chargers all the way. No more 3-phase! I see since I did the journey there is DC fast charging now at Norseman, Port Augusta and Nullarbor Roadhouse where previously it was slower AC.

Hi. 3 phase is 415 volts and the type 2 AC connector delivers 240v in a single phase so you do need electrical supply equipment in the middle to make that electrical change. We have two Tesla’s. I think there is still too much planning involved for travelling long distances due to the limited supercharger footprint in Australia. It’s not an issue for us because we don’t do cross country road trips but it’s definitely I big problem.

Gotta say I am not a fan of EV's. I just don't understand how one can extend a trip by a 7 hours (25%-4:47 shows the trip details inc charge time), add in extra time planning the trip (inc acc with charging etc), actually trying to find or get to a charger, range anxiety and then turning up to a place to charge that has been vandalised (think surrounded by crims) as a viable way forward especially in Australia. I also note that none of the superchargers were busy at the time, if they were it probably would have extended your charge time. I guess you didn't have to wait to charge at least. I am also pretty sure that 100% of your electricity was supplied by coal fired plants, and I am not so sure that EV's are as green once worn out and well. Hey here is a thing. You drive what you want, leave us to decide what is best for us to drive (and eat, drink, say and...). Just a thought. Oh and I would be surprised if the vandalism was targeted at the chargers, I am 99.9% sure if there were unattended petrol stations they would have been damaged too.

Thanks for your reply. At 4:45 in the video the times from ABRP are not 100% correct. At Narrabri it says 2h45m when actually it is a fast charger. I was there at Narrabri for 40mins in total and went to lunch in that time. For the 1h2m at Lightning Ridge I went dinner so no impact. Excepting Walgett where I was inconvenienced and had to use 3-phase all the other stops were <40mins where I had latitude to go get a coffee, rest room, walk around etc which is great to stretch your legs on these long driving legs. For this trip in an ICE you would have needed to fill up with fuel say 4 times which is at least an hour standing by your car or doing other things directly related to filling your car up. I'd prefer the luxury of spending 1 min to plug and free to go and do what I want. The beauty of an EV is you can plugin and can go and do other things. It is early days for EV's and charging infrastructure - a few years from now fast DC chargers will be common place across the country and the charging infrastructure anxiety will be gone. Also my RU-vid videos will become obsolete....

Mate for someone who is saying leave us be and let us drive what we want you’ve doing a good job here trolling EVs which noone is forcing you to own. This channel is just putting info out for those that are interested. If you aren’t you don’t have to buy one Fun fact. 1/3 of our grid is now renewable powered. As a coal miner I’m happy my work is in the meantime supported by the part of the grid fueled by coal rather than petrol and diesel $s that are sent offshore by over $60bn a year. When’s it’s electrically powered it’s being fueled by home grown whatever the source. I’m pretty pleased with that.

I don't recall anywhere in this video where John is pushing EV's down your throat. And even if he was, you aren't compelled to watch, so there's no excuse for that comment. Us EV drivers unerstand not everyone likes EV's and in some circumstances they are unsuitable. But remember, 100 years ago, ICE cars were in the same boat, poor refuelling stations, low ranges, range anxiety, etc, etc. And the complaints were coming from the same type of people as you, funny that, always complaining regardless of what people are doing, there's just no pleasing some people. In another few years, there will be better infrastructure, more greener power available, better batteries, that's what progress looks like. If we all thought like you, we'd be still traveling around by horse and cart.

@@utha2665 Actually when I was driving in the 70s and 80s Range anxiety was a thing for Fossil Cars. Not many could go over 300 klms range. Many Petrol Stations were shut by 6 or 7 at night. It was mostly roadhouses for Trucks that were spread thinly. So you had to travel mostly in the Daytime and no Internet to tell you if the next towns Petrol station was open or WHERE it was located.

@@EV_John Mate, not sure just how you fill an ice car at a servo but if left home full then three stops max. It takes me 5-10 mins to use the services so maybe 30mins down in an ice car. If I had a diesel then I might have only had to fill once. I also notice you don't add time for finding a 3 phase at the local footy oval, well how did you pay for it, get the key (I assume) and I am 100% sure the local council doesn't operate 24/7 or even 7 days a week. I agree taking a break on long trips is mandatory, however I like to do it when I/passengers require it not when the car has run low on charge. I used to do Sydney Melb on a regular basis 600ks with usually one stop. Usual travel times 8.5-9 hours. I will say the last two were the worst, so i f we were able to go a decent speed (130-140) I could have done it in 7ish hours. Try that with your EV. Still no mention of where the electricity comes from, recycling of the cars, reliability, insurance costs, where you can park (starting to get restrictions on EV's parking in some places, increased charging times depending on usage and well I keep a jerry can in the garage just in case there is a shortage. Do you have a generator at home in case the power is off?

Really took twice as long, was much more precarious (what if there was a fire or the chargers were not avail on the arrival at Exmouth-you know like he said in the vid)? I like to drive while I am fresh and not stop till I need a break let alone for the car so it can re-power... EV's aren't really viable for the city folks the country wont have a bar of them.

Excellent video.....I did a 3,000 kilometre trip on NZ north island and it cost less than half what an ICE vehicle would have. Lunch stops and overnighters were really easy there, Pak 'n' Save is like a giant Aldi and had chargers while we shopped. Interesting, nobody complains about caravans plugging in every night at a caravan park. Be prepared to get plenty of negative comments from ICE owners.....

Great video, such a pity that it wasn’t available when we did our trip from Melbourne to Perth last year. I had to learn so much of this “on the fly”. I cannot re-emphasise enough how good the Tesla energy management app is, once mastered. As another hint, it is easy to source a buckle insert that can be used to trick the seat belt sensors; even a dog tether from a pet store will do it. Another is to get all your charging cables right - before you leave the east coast - because if you need to buy an exotic adapter in the west, you’ll have to wait while it is shipped - from Melbourne or Sydney. Lastly, if you want to carry a spare tyre, narrow compatibles are available (try Braumach), that take up less room in the back; but don’t forget a jack and lifting point pucks.

Fantastic info for me a potential Tesla buyer. Awesome, thanks. 2 ideas to help you. Maybe get or print a 110 k fake road sign. After the roadworks put it in front of car. Just need to decide if that’s more of a pain than the fault. 😁. Second is make a 3d printed buckle for seat belts. Fits in and tricks computer but is not tall and making indents. EV manufacturers are excluding spares for many reasons including saving space, reducing weight and reducing cost. For most drivers the EV is only driven around town and you are generally close to tyre repair facilities if you need them. Most people don’t know how to change a spare tire, so they’re not going to do it anyway. Both my Tesla and Hyundai EV vehicles come with roadside assistance which includes tyre repair or towing to a tyre repair shop. This is the option my wife and daughter would take. Further you have a TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) that will give you a heads up that you need to add air or find a tyre repair shop. If you are travelling remote or long distance a spare tyre makes sense to carry a spare. For around town, not so much.
