We'll look at charging during the road trip, including across the Nullarbor, as well as highlights. A total of 3,400 km's was covered.

lots of familiar charging stops, we did the trip about a year ago, and interesting to see the changes since we did the trip. there was no fast charging between Broken Hill to just outside Perth. at William's, Supercharger. Kimba was a 5 hr charge for us.

Fantastic journey, we want to go all the way to Perth in a couple of years - also in our model Y. Might be some more DC chargers by then too.
@EV_John

Hi. The charging landscape is changing very quickly. Quite likely if you do the journey across to Perth in a few years time it will be DC fast chargers all the way. No more 3-phase! I see since I did the journey there is DC fast charging now at Norseman, Port Augusta and Nullarbor Roadhouse where previously it was slower AC.

We have two Tesla’s. I think there is still too much planning involved for travelling long distances due to the limited supercharger footprint in Australia. It’s not an issue for us because we don’t do cross country road trips but it’s definitely I big problem.

We stayed in Nyngan about 8 months ago before they installed the fast chargers, we had come from broken hill so had a cabin at the caravan park and charged from the 15amp came site outlet.
@EV_John
@EV_John 9 месяцев назад
There are caravan parks littered across Australia and they are not normally listed on Plugshare. A powered site is a great option to charge at a 15A caravan socket. Even if you are staying in a Motel nearby the caravan park management are receptive to you leaving your EV overnight on a powered site.
@tonyspiegel6771
@tonyspiegel6771 9 месяцев назад
Plug share is amazing just make sure you have all your cables and portable charger and you can charge at any power outlet. I have done Gold Coast to Adelaide and back as well as Gold Coast to Charlieville and back. Where ever a caravan park is you have a charging service just rent a site. On both my trips I never had to use the portable charger and only was on AC (destination charger) once and that was to charlieville. The Nullabor is a trip im also looking to do from the Gold Coast. Might even go the full around Australia trip while im at it. Ill probably wait for when I buy the Model Y as my Model 3 wont be great at camping.

Wth I didn't know you could get a 3phase direct plug charger. Holy shit how come no one talks about this. Basically charge anywhere there is access to 3 phase power plug. Just opens up the ev range in au Soo much !!!

In Australia, we really need a car driven by power of flies, well, hopefully, we will be flying on the backs of flies. That is how many of them in this country and no one want to tell you about it.

Thank you for posting this video. Really shows the critics that this kind of trip can be done. One random question… where did you get your wheel covers? Do you like them.
@EV_John
@EV_John 9 месяцев назад
Hi Renny. The hubcaps are Razors. Yes they are great. They sit over the lip of the rim and protect the rim if you scape a gutter or something. Got them from Tessories but they don't seem to stock them now. I see them at tesdaddy.com.au/products/19-razor-wheel-covers-matt-black-for-model-y

Aren’t most of the roadhouses across the Nullarbor run on diesel generators?
@EV_John
@EV_John 4 месяца назад
Correct. The really remote roadhouses are not on the electricity grid so have to be self reliant using a combination of solar and diesel generators for electricity supply.

Great video I do this trip often (reverse direction) and am looking at an EV for my next car. Once WAs electric highway is fully built we’ll have decent charging to the borders. Btw, some pronunciations of SA and WA towns need work lol (eg Norseman not Nooseman)

Great video. It seems like 3 phase is widely used. Is there such a thing as a Type 2, to 3 phase/pin adapter ?
@EV_John
@EV_John 2 месяца назад
Hi. 3 phase is 415 volts and the type 2 AC connector delivers 240v in a single phase so you do need electrical supply equipment in the middle to make that electrical change. I have an explanation of 3-phase and the EV supply equipment required in my video [Day 0 Tesla Y 2023 Road Trip - Planning]. Check ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QbwQu9PFXwc.html video starting at the 4min mark.

Wow, great drive John. My wife and I took our first test drive in a Tesla Y & 3 yesterday at the Mt Gravatt Tesla Centre in Queensland. Amazing cars. The Model Y is our car of choice. We are trying to convince ourselves that we can afford it. A Question is your Y a standard Range or Long Range? My wife isn't a road tripper, but here first thing after the drive was that she can't wait to do a road trip. Look forward to your next adventure.
@EV_John
@EV_John 9 месяцев назад
Hi Raymond. My Tesla Y is a standard range which is ample for road tripping. Good for 300km+ between charging stops which was not an issue travelling the 9,800km return trip from one side of the country to another. The standard range is an LFP battery which you can charge to 100% regularly - even daily. The long range uses an NMC battery which Tesla recommends charging to 90% except on long trips. So for the majority use case of daily commuting / local trips there is not much difference in range if you charge the battery normally. Personally I could not justify the AUD$13K difference in price for an extra 80km range or so.
@RaymondVolker
@RaymondVolker 9 месяцев назад
@@EV_John I've just finished watching all your videos. Very inspiring. Unlike what a lot of people think, you can do these sort of road trips in our big vast land, today. But in the years to come, when Fast DC charges are much more common and even 7/11/22kW AC chargers it will make it a so much easier for the general traveller. It makes me think a trip for us to Longreach is a walk in the park. I hope to someday go from Brisbane-Sydney-Melbourne-Perth and back and see more of our amazing country. Thanks John.
@utha2665
@utha2665 9 месяцев назад
Hey, I too went on a test drive of a Model Y and have placed an order just yesterday. I just ordered the standard rear wheel drive version which states a 455km range. My reason was to keep the price under $70k for the $3500 government rebate, but I am also novating the car through my work and with the waiving of FBT makes it a very cheap option. I also tried the Model Y performance just to see what it was like and man, the acceleration just pins you back in your seat. I can't justify the $92K price tag though, haha. You might also want to find someone with a referral code, you'll get another $750 off which will cover the cost of a mobile charger, plus some and the referrer also gets 10,000 points to redeem from the Tesla shop.

15A extension cord as the caravan sockets won't accept the Tesla UMC 90degree bend on their plug. Get a heavy duty cord from Bunnings. Also you'll need a type 2 to type 2 cable as a number of AC chargers were bring your own cable.

Also took out a an NRMA Ultimate Care Road Assistance policy which gives me 24x7 Australia wide coverage with the first 100km towing free.
