I’m old enough to have seen all the legends. From Led Zeppelin to Van Halen to Deep Purple to Skynard to The Who. Fifty years of the big concerts. Festivals. The biggest disappointment was Led Zeppelin. I did see AC/DC in 1979. Perhaps the one show I thought was the best ever. Maybe Van Halen at The Us Festival. But The Who, in my opinion the greatest band to see live ever. Certainly with Moon they were. Deep Purple right up there too. The insanity at CalJam was legendary. I was there as an 11 year old kid. Skynard was incredible live. KISS in 1977 at the LA Forum, that was something. But, The Who was just the best ever.
This live version is SO GOOD. I really like the album version as well but there's something about this performance. It's so raw and filled with emotion that kinda gets a bit lost with the flourishes of the studio version. I get goosebumps every single time Roger sings the chorus. I've always held Pete's lyrics very close to my heart. I just love The Who.
Of all the commentators and rockers who emerged at this time, it's Pete Townsend, working-class London kid, who understood and captured the late 60s ethos better than anyone else.
They were the best from late 67 till 73. Then they just played their hits.....Pete stopped trying to get better. I mean they were still great in the studio....Quadrophenia
err no. There's nothing in the way I walk That could tell you where I'm going There's nothing in the words I speak That can betray anything I'm knowing Don't think about the way I dress You can fit me on a labeled shelf Don't pretend that you know me 'Cause I don't even know myself Ooh, I don't know myself I don't mind if you try once in a while And I don't mind if I cry once in a while The doors aren't shut as tight as they might seem I'm just trying to fight my way out of this dream Don't listen to the words I say Weighing up if I'm enlightened Don't shiver as you pass me by 'Cause mister I'm the one who's frightened The police just came and left They wanted me and no one else Don't pretend that you know me 'Cause I don't even know myself I said I don't know myself I don't mind if you try once in a while I don't mind if I cry once in a while The doors aren't shut as tight as they might seem And now I'm just trying to fight my way out of this dream Do you remember me, I don't remember you Do you still love me, you know I think you do I have been gone And some prison warder knows my scream I'm just trying to fight my way out of this dream There's only five who know my real name And my mother don't believe they know it What she called me is the way I'm staying And no one'll ever know it Come on all of you big boys Come on all of you elves Don't pretend that you know me 'Cause I don't even know myself I said I don't know myself I don't mind if you try once in a while And I don't mind if I cry once in a while
I saw the mighty Led Zeppelin in concert back in the 70's, as well as The Who. I keep telling people The Who is by far the better live band. I fell asleep during L Z's The Song Remains the Same concert. That was my 3rd & last Zep concert for me.
You're correct. I saw The Who on Thanksgiving night, Nov 22, 1973 at the Inglewood Forum (Los Angeles). If anyone was there and reads this, I need say no more. That was the one. Not only did it prove to me that The Who were the greatest live band in the world, but me and 19,999 other folks got to witness the single greatest rock concert of all time. The Zeps were great, but The Who? No comparison.
That's the boring Zep concert I'm talking about. Where Page pulls out a violin bow & starts whipping his guitar strings(??). Silly. Then there was that stunt w/ that anttenna/retrifier thing. He waves his hands at it & it makes some erie feedback b/s. Both gimmicks failed to impress me. In fact, that turned me off to the Zeppelin.
No doubt true. Greatest live band in rock history (the R&B Who) from Live at Leeds and other concerts of that era. I always say after Tommy they got soft.
Has anyone here seen the Tales of the crypt epsiode starring Roger Daltrey? If not its good. Steve buscemi is in it too! 🖤 Side note: It's also a really good lesson on why you should not covet your neighbor's wife 💀🔪
In '75, I turned 18, graduated HS, and could buy beer. I saw Jaws in the theater and the Frampton "Comes Alive" tour in the summer, but the absolute highlight of the year was seeing The Who with Mooney in November. Great year! I saw the Tommy tour twice in '89 and saw them once again in the early 2000s, before John passed. RIP Mooney and John. Thank You!
SSooooooo good! !! SO GOOD! Such a beautiful soulful song given the heart by Daltry and Pete, bassist and Drummer, - all great STILL! Amazing! Only discovered them last year~!
Keith isnt the best nor my favorite, but he is unequivocally not only the most unique, but by FAR the most interesting to watch play drums……and it’s not even close
I've stated countless times that I never saw a live drummer like Keith Moon/ certainly not a drummer's drummer and totally unorthodox by all measures/ but a Force of Nature nonetheless !!!###
