I don't remember what it was an installer for, but I was able to get an installer to work using proton by steam. Not sure if that's possible on all linux distros though.
There's quite a few lightweight options for low-spec laptops. I just installed Lubuntu on my HP Stream 14 (4GB RAM, 64 GB SSD), and it's running smooth and fast. I also tested Debian out on this machine for a few weeks. Just as impressive, with minor drawbacks here and there.
After all this time it makes me wonder why isn't there a distro where it can use direct windows code instead of transcripting with emulators, I think that is the main problem, you might say "windows is proprietary" but there could be some agreement between the end user and windows, like a distro where it could interpret windows code, the user would put his windows proprietary key and only use from windows what he wanted and if he wanted, I mean if you are paying is it considered piracy?
Does Solaar allow button configuration or key remapping? I want to switch to Linux but finding alternatives for everything I use is proving to be problematic. I have a G502 and G510 and a ton of macros
The more we keep getting people to switch to Linux the more Microsoft will go into bankruptcy over this modern gimmick what Windows and Mac can do Linux can already do did I mention no forced TPM 2.0 down your throat?
Funny story about WPS being kind of suspicious. At my last work, some guy sent his resume as a WPS shareable link instead of attaching the file to his email. When the HR person clicked the link, it downloaded the installer for WPS office and automatically changed all the default apps from MS to WPS. She was very confused why "word changed how it looks" and also didn't realise it was caused by the email so didn't explain this to IT for a while. Now WPS is banned there ahah
Why not just use application like Libre Office and set the default formats to xlsx or docx. ? Why not use the default document viewer that comes with distributions like Ubuntu which will open pdf files directly. Or use the built in print to pdf funcionality?
LibreOffice is slightly roughly themed, but at least it runs. Microsoft Office takes ages to open a simple Word document... and with 365 it takes even longer. I can bring up a large document in LibreOffice within a second or two. I'm curious about OnlyOffice, will give that a shot. WPS Office was something I tried a decade ago and then threw away when it started dropping me ads and blocking features until paid for.
Good guide. It is getting more difficult to even buy a PC without Windows , as most vendors and manufacturers assume you must have this OS, and Windows is not cheap as it is a significant part of the cost of a new machine. Microsoft have a virtual monopoly and want to keep everyone under their control.
Only thing i will seem to miss is the whatsapp app and office, but having whatsapp web and libreoffice, my transition to linux seems to be an easy path
I want to use Linux for my work (web development),, but i also want to play games,. Can i run games on LINUX without 3rd party launcher? I dont mind tweaking as long as i do it once and not for every games... How about of getting banned?
wayland is unusable right now. definitely hope they improve it in the future, but it just DOES NOT WORK. and now instead of waiting for it to mature they're ruining the experience of everyone by forcing wayland. it's annoying.
MS Office is kind of unavoidable if you really do word/Excel on a daily basis. Excel in particular is tough to let go! So, most of us who ditch MS Office (and more often than not, come back to it) are in some sort of niche.
I am lazy, I want things to just work. I will stay with windows. Linux fanbase hates windows, starting from reddit to RU-vid. Gosh! Thought the comments will be about what progress linux community is making to convince us to use it, but its all just bashing windows, my goodness!
Bottles shows so much promise but it's not ready for prime time just yet. I would love to get DaVinci Resolve working and I know you have a tutorial; I just don't have the bandwidth atm.
Will try Only Office. Libre Office Writer and Calc are fine. But Impress is really not nice to interact with. Then there is only Onenote missing. Has anyone experience with installing Onenote standalone (this is possible!) with Vine and getting it to work?
Hey Michael, I've got a situation here. While flashing kubuntu into the usb stick, an error popped up saying something along the lines of "Something went wrong". Now, my USB stick won't even get detected by my computer and it's corrupted. I had 16gb of space and it was brand new.
You can use the Windows Disk Management tool to reformat it. If it doesn't work with it either, then you can use "diskpart" to clean the disk. Make sure that you select the right drive though. There are many guides out there
Eventually. ARM is already pretty well supported on Linux, and if the drivers are integrated into the kernel, then they might have an edge over Windows. Depends on the rest of the hardware though
Hi, what's yout current linux distro / desktop environment? Your desktop looks super clean. I'm trying to convince myself to make the jump to switch to Linux finally, lol
Just a quick comment about Microsoft office online. There is very little that cannot be done online that would require you to install the applications. From 99% of users out there they can use Microsoft office via the web interface. It works great and it has a lot of the functionality that typically, most users have access to via Web. I’m not sure why this would be downplayed but having used it primarily with very very large spreadsheets I have not had any problems with the Webb.
I'm a social gamer, so I end up disagreeing. I usually play single player games if any when I'm by myself, but certain games like the finals with friends, would just not be possible anymore. perhaps i'll have one windows ssd, and one linux ssd, but yea. I don't know. your solution doesn't help me when it comes to social circumstances.
You didn't mention freeoffice by softmaker. Not open source but free for personal use. You do have to register to use it past the trial period but they do send you a licence key that you keep and can use it if you ever have to reinstall especially if like me you distro hop a lot.
To me, these installer problems sound very like a "works as designed" problem. In other words, they do NOT want it to install and run on Linux. They are protecting the MS mother ship. I don't actually care anymore. I have software that runs on Linux natively, and since I retried bur still very active in the IT world, what I have is good enough for *everything*.
