@@someoneelse8103 I actually don't know. It happens to me right after the installation and it keeps on booting on the live installer, except when the USB is unplugged. Yes I also launch the live ISO through the boot menu (not through boot priority list). My guess here is that if there's no OS on your drive the USB Live ISO will be on the first/top boot priority list, and the 2nd one would be the newly added/fresh installed OS.

Two additional tipps: 1. The Fedora Image Writer can write any Linux iso asnd works on all systems and is open source 2. When you use Windows, you can hold the "Shift" Key while clicking on reboot and it'll offer you to boot from an USB stick. Much easier than going through the BIOS. You can boot into the bios from there as well.

I have been thinking about using Linux. Windows 11 can be a pain. For casual use (streaming, browsing, chatting) and gaming. I don't play any major popular online games besides Helldivers 2. The rest is SP games. Any Linux OS you would recommend?
@motoryzen
@motoryzen 4 месяца назад
To be honest the Linux operating system of choice really doesn't matter. What matters is whether or not whine and or Lutris or Heroic Launcher can let you download, install, and successfully run and play the game if that particular game requires that form of assistance AKA if there is not a native Linux version of it... .... as well as if you have the correct drivers installed if you're running an Nvidia GPU and you have installed and updated mesa and vulkan. The desktop environment does not usually matter either A quick internet search will land you to a site that has different types of ratings as to whether or not certain native Windows games work under Linux via wine or another compatibility layer AKA that assistance I was talking about earlier That search may have to include something like quote one window that work quote Beyond all that if it is a native steam game be in Linux or Windows the chances that it won't work are pretty damn low these days

Theyre about the same difficulty imo, depending on what linux distro we're comparing to. Knowing what file system to use, swap files etc can be a bit advanced (but not important for most popular distros other than arch), since you can just use the defaults. For windows, you actually also need to be quite technical if you want a local account with no microsoft account.

Do you just leave windows installed on the same drive or do you need to delete it? Do i need to install linux on a different boot drive then what windows is currently on?
@MichaelNROH
@MichaelNROH 2 месяца назад
You can do either. The way that this works is, that commonly used distro installers automatically detect if Windows is installed and asks if you want to keep it or not. If you do, then the installer replaces the Windows Boot Manager with another one called Grub, which can both boot Windows or Linux (It asks you when starting the PC). Without manual setup, there is only one boot loader, mostly on the same drive that Windows uses. The actual data of Linux can be installed either on a dedicated drive or the same one as Windows with the Boot Loader.

Great video! Just my 5 cents: At least on opensuse, i found that adding flathub through discover adds it for the root account, so to install update and manage flatpaks i have to use sudo/root permissions. Adding flathub trough CLI with option --user made the flatpak sudo independent and works properly. Also a nice addition to the video would be disabling or at least configuring secureboot, as some distros dont play along with it nicely, if there is not a shim efi file on the target partition

I noticed that some Flatpaks like GPU screen recorder have to be installed system-wide to be able to record your entire screen.

Hey I'm a new subscriber, I have a question, does all the types of linux distributions including the kali linux it self have the same command prompt things? Or some of them have less? And which one is the best for command prompt and gaming and for desktop experience?
@MichaelNROH
@MichaelNROH 2 месяца назад
If you mean the amount of commands, then it depends on how many applications are installed. Otherwise there are some differences between the big Distros Debian / Fedora / Arch or openSUSE as well as the ones based of it, but it's mostly just the package managers (apt, dnf, pacman, etc.) or the underlying control system (e.g. systemd). Don't worry if you don't know what these are, but you can find the resources if you would ever need them. And for your other question, there is no "best" distro. There are generally just more user friendly distros like Ubuntu, Fedora, Manjaro, etc., and then there's the rest where you need to setup a lot of stuff yourself. If you are just starting out, I would recommend the one of the one's I mentioned. They all feature the same Desktop experiences and feel identical

@MichaelNROH
@MichaelNROH 2 месяца назад
It depends. The best way would be to completely seperate Linux and Windows via decates drives. If that's not an option, then make sure that the installer detects your Windows installation and asks you what to do with it. This happens at the latest, before you format / partition the drive. If it only shows "automatic partitioning", "use full disk", etc. without any mentioning of Windows then it would wipe it completely. Just look out for it

I started messing around with Linux for the first time recently. I tried Debian and now Fedora. I broke stuff, but I learned, just to get to nowhere. Now I can't seem to play any steam games. They simply never launch. I genuinely don't know what to do. I don't understand this OS and why it keeps just not working, even though I feel as if I do everything right. Do you think that trying Ubuntu could be a good thing?
@MichaelNROH
@MichaelNROH 4 месяца назад
Depends on what you are doing. Linus Torvalds, the original creator of Linux, often complains about users and developers breaking userspace to do stuff. If you run sudo, then you are essentially doing that. For applications its usually fine, but you should know what you are doing. Otherwise you can't really break much
@sergeykish
@sergeykish 3 месяца назад
You can always reinstall. That's easiest fix I've done many times in first years of using and breaking Linux. After reinstall you can try to break it again, narrow down changes, google specific breaking path. Someone could have experienced same issue. You can also run Steam from terminal. Check what it logs after failed attempt to start game, google if something looks like an error. But there may be false positives.

It probably won't move mountains for gaming, since it is usually not influenced as much by the Operating System but you could see an improvement for daily Desktop usage in general

@UnstoppableCJ750

Instead it would say “Prohibited by secure boot policy” “You need to load the kernel first”
@MichaelNROH
@MichaelNROH 27 дней назад
Some more recent Laptops have more than one secure boot option somewhere which only allows Windows images. This needs to be disabled. Generally speaking Ubuntu and other popular Distros support Secure Boot, but not all do

During the installation process, modern installers usually detect Windows and ask you if you want to keep or erase it. This way you can easily set up a Dual Boot system or you just remove it

@MichaelNROH
@MichaelNROH Месяц назад
It's optional but a good practice nonetheless. If something goes wrong, you format the wrong drive, or you experience a power loss during installation, then your data can get corrupted. Backing up your files manually also has the advantage that you only copy the stuff that you really need, and not all the temporary files of programs as well

This is literally the first Linux video I have seen (as a windows user) that actually looks approachable for me. I have an i7-7700k and I have been dreading the need to buy a new PC with windows 11, when my current PC runs perfectly fine. Honestly this looks too good to be true... Is it really this easy? I'll have access to firefox, my steam games, and NO WINDOWS 11??? What is the catch...
@MichaelNROH

Less convinience as in targeted ads. Most people are not a fan of it, as it heavily involves data collection, but its the truth 😅
@Mhaakify
@Mhaakify 3 месяца назад
The catch is, that he's omitting a lot of important little details, and that it's not as easy as he makes it out to be, which starts by choosing your distribution. If you go solely by desktop environment, you don't know what's under the hood and break stuff constantly. If you decide to switch to Linux, use a dual boot or older computer to try it out first, and learn what the differences are before you make your decision. I fell for one of those "beginner guide" videos and had a horrible time with Linux. It is much, much more involved than "throw it on your disk and go."

Choosing a distro is probably the hardest part of it all lol 😂 Also, what's the difference between Kubuntu and KDE Neon? I'm inclined towards a distro with KDE desktop environment but I have very little experience with Linux (Ubuntu), so I narrowed it down to those two. Mind sharing some thoughts regarding the matter?
@MichaelNROH
@MichaelNROH 2 месяца назад
The difference is how and who maintains it. KDE Neon is maintained by KDE, and Ubuntu is maintained by Canonical. Since one is maintained by a company, driven by financials, Ubuntu is objectively more reliable since there is more at stake. In reality it doesn't matter though. Both use KDE Plasma, but Neon comes with a more recent version

Good guide. It is getting more difficult to even buy a PC without Windows , as most vendors and manufacturers assume you must have this OS, and Windows is not cheap as it is a significant part of the cost of a new machine. Microsoft have a virtual monopoly and want to keep everyone under their control.
