My first time was in 2016. Stayed at 5E8 on the west side of Yellowstone lake. It just grabbed my soul and I’ve gone back every single year since. Hope you get to go again! I’m going out on a whole new adventure this year in September. It’s still in Yellowstone, but a whole new way of seeing the area. Hope to see you again in October. Take care!

Been most places camping in Yellowstone. But Thorofare remains yet out there for me. Getting less and less likely as I’m getting old. Loved your video. Curious, how were you prepared if a snow dump came in since it’s Oct?
@longwildernesswalks
@longwildernesswalks 24 дня назад
I brought the kitchen sink. I had multiple layers of waterproof clothing that I didn't put on until I got to camp. Otherwise I would burn up and soak myself with sweat. The snow didn't bother me so much as the 40 MPH wind blowing sleet and freezing rain into me. I've hiked in multiple snow storms in YSNP, but being 40 miles from the truck and knowing I was the only person out there at that time of year put a bit of a pep in my step. :)

@@longwildernesswalks --my fear at that time of year is an inaccurate forecast. Very easy to get an unforseen 1-2 ft dump of snow. Let's say your 30 miles backwoods--now what? Would your preparation allow you to get out of that scenario? Your video has me feeling young again-wondering if I could get myself to Hawks Rest!

Why were you yelling at the little black bear that was already moving away from you?
@longwildernesswalks
@longwildernesswalks 2 месяца назад
He was heading right at me, after three or four yells he didn’t stop. It was raining hard and I didn’t think he heard me. Legit scared me too. 😂 when he finally noticed me he kinda freaked out. What you saw was the last 10% of the whole situation. Plus, the less I say about the situation the less my wife worries when I go. 😆

Love th yellin at th bear nobody want you here… really? Yellowstone home to bears….but not people …silly comment considering where ya are..I’ve never seen a bear in the backcountry there..heard wolves overnight..bears are where they find ya.

You see, I've had black bears follow me back to camp on the 9-Mile and just chill outside of camp until sunset. It's VERY unnerving. That happened in 2014, and I've been paranoid since, especially down the 9 mile. In the moment, it felt right. LOL!

Great trip! Nice footage! Brings back memories of that country when I worked down there. I was the Thorofare Ranger for a few years and the Heart Lake Ranger for 8 years. Sorry we were there when you were at Heart Lake. In 2020 I came back as a volunteer since during the pandemic the NPS couldn't hire many seasonal rangers due to housing concerns. I was in at Heart Lake for almost 70 days. In 2021, my wife and I were at Heart Lake for 56 days. This summer we will be volunteering in Lake Clark National Park in Alaska at the Dick Proenekke Historic Site where I worked with Dick in the early 1990s. I will put up some RU-vids of those days at some point.

I love you videos man, you know why? I watch all these young folks out there hiking 10-15-20 miles a day through amazing places. Then I realize I can't do that...especially carrying gear and food. Getting permits in places like Yellowstone or Glacier, etc is hard, because your campsites are not always available, and the rangers will give you sites further apart that you can handle sometimes. The Bechler is on my to do list!

I toyed with the idea of hitting the Shoshone thermal area via canoe from Lewis lake up to Shoshone lake! Though canoeing around the south end of Yellowstone Lake would be amazing as well. @@longwildernesswalks

@@fiziksgeek3562oh it is!! If you aren’t into climbing, take the 9-Mile down the east side to the southern side. It’s easier. If you want to see a bunch of thermals, come in from heart lake. Honestly, IMHO, that side of the park is hands down the best. Very few people want to hike 50+ miles to see this stuff, so you might not see anyone. I went 10 days out there a few years ago in October and didn’t see a single soul the entire time. It was incredible. No matter what, have fun!!!

Yes!! SO jealous I missed this trip. This was the first thing Maggie and I watched after getting home from our wedding. You always make great videos of legit wild trips. I TOTALLY relate to those food cravings you guys were having lol. You’re also spot on regarding the importance of carrying some trash bags. But man, that was some stunning fall scenery in the Bechler, with really cool wildlife encounters. There isn’t a day that goes by where I don’t crave being back in Yellowstone, so videos like this certainly help past the time. I’ll definitely watch this multiple times and you’ve once again put out one of the better and more immersive backpacking videos out there. Cheers Aaron!

Love this video of your trip. Not so much all the food talk towards the end, kinda negates the experience. Too much of your enjoyment of that last leg focused on that instead of soaking up the last bit of the natural beauty.

Great video. Excellent footage & commentary. Smart choices about knowing the terrain and your limits. You (along with many others) have inspired me to mount an expedition to the Thorofare next Labor Day! Only critique I have is to keep the camera pointed at the scenery while you talk. I LOVE that you have NO music. I love the backcountry for quiet. I don't need a soundtrack! I look forward to all your future videos!

I was hoping you would have fixed your aperture on your video camera after your last Thorofare trip. I didn't want to post anything negative about it on your last video because I figured you weren't aware of it until after your trip. However, I see you've got the same issue going on. Your video camera is letting in too much light, and your videography is not doing justice to the beauty of Yellowstone. If you can't adjust the aperture on your current camera, I suggest getting a better video camera. Still, you got some nice footage. Thanks for posting.

A thoroughly enjoyable 2 hours. Thoroughfare is one of the few areas of Yellowstone I have not hiked. Starting in the 1980's over hundreds of miles. My wife and I worked at Lake inside the park for two years and my bucketlist trip to Thoroughfare is still not checked off. But... at 70 now, I have hung up my backpack, sold my Harley, and do what old hikers do... watch you young bucks take my dream trip. I've noticed you keep coming back to Thoroghfare... I kept going back to Bechler... made 13 backpacking trips in that section and know it well, if you ever want some advice on those camps. Last trip was 2020 on horseback as my farewell 'hike'. (It's in my will to have my ashes spread at Three Rivers Junction in Ferris Pool, one of the few legal hotpots in the park. One grumble my bride had was you don't dwell on the meals. We always enjoy our meals in the backcountry - next trip dive into your cooking a bit. Thanks for the memories. - Greybeard
