This trip took place from Oct 2nd through the 11th, late in the backpacking season for Yellowstone. I didn't see another soul for 9 days. The original plan was to spend 10 nights and 11 days in the backcountry. Due to bad weather, I hiked out a day early making the trip an 8-night, 9-day trip. I covered 87 miles total, traveling from Heart Lake to the East side of Yellowstone Lake, then down the Thorofare, up and over the Continental Divide again and over to Mariposa Lake, down the Sanke River to the Snake River Confluence, and finally out via Heart Lake. Temperatures ranged from 20F to 70F. Wildlife was galore!
I did this trip solo after some plans fell apart. I stayed at 8J1, 7G1, 6A3, 6D2, 6Y6, 6Y4, 6M4, and 8C5. I saw and heard a ton of wildlife on this trip. I didn't see another human for 9 days, which was the best part. Solitude does a lot of good for the soul. I apologize for the camera mount rig that is visible in some of the shots, either I rushed the shot or didn't notice. I'll be upgrading my rigging next year. Also, there isn't much shot on the last two days as I hiked 17.5 miles one day in heavy snow and freezing rain, then 15.5 miles the next day to beat the oncoming winter storm and 12" to 18" of snow that fell the next day.
Big shout out to my wife, Teresa for being as understanding as she was with me on this trip. I scared her on my 2nd to last day by not contacting her for over 9 hours. Heavy cloud cover will impact the Zoleo, FYI. To my best friends Alex, Ian, and Josh - next year fellas.
Finally, this trip video is not a guide. Please do the research yourself before taking on a trip like this. Yellowstone is a dangerous place if you don't know what you're doing, what you're getting yourself into, or don't have the correct gear. Weather is the big player in Yellowstone, so be prepared for the worst. Please use good judgment, share your plans with others, and don't be afraid to ask for help. Keep comments civil and polite, please. Enjoy!

A thoroughly enjoyable 2 hours. Thoroughfare is one of the few areas of Yellowstone I have not hiked. Starting in the 1980's over hundreds of miles. My wife and I worked at Lake inside the park for two years and my bucketlist trip to Thoroughfare is still not checked off. But... at 70 now, I have hung up my backpack, sold my Harley, and do what old hikers do... watch you young bucks take my dream trip. I've noticed you keep coming back to Thoroghfare... I kept going back to Bechler... made 13 backpacking trips in that section and know it well, if you ever want some advice on those camps. Last trip was 2020 on horseback as my farewell 'hike'. (It's in my will to have my ashes spread at Three Rivers Junction in Ferris Pool, one of the few legal hotpots in the park. One grumble my bride had was you don't dwell on the meals. We always enjoy our meals in the backcountry - next trip dive into your cooking a bit. Thanks for the memories. - Greybeard

Bravo for you, man. I've never done anything like this, and frankly I doubt I ever will. But I love the outdoors, and I love Yellowstone. I'm grateful that people like you experience big adventures like this and share them with others. Excellent video. Great adventure!

Had no idea loons made those noises. I would have swore they were wolves, but then again I live in Australia and we have neither of those species.

This reminds me of the My Own Frontier videos that made me fall in love with Yellowstone to begin with. Great video, LWW!

Man, on night 2, the wolves were planning an attack on the camp. 🥴

Awesome walk! I had pulled a permit to hike into that lower area of thorofare w my boys a few years ago. Unfortunately it was still too early in the season and the crossing of the Yellowstone was still NOT possible so we had to change our permit. Maybe this summer or fall i’ll try again. Glad to see you video. It’s nice to “preview” an area. My boys are all starting to live their own lives now and i’ll probably be walking it solo like you did. Great video!👍 thanks for the preview! 👍

It's a soul-changing experience that's for sure. I came back from this trip changed. Heck, if you get to do this trip and don't have anyone to go with just send me a message. If I can go I will. :)

Phenomenal video, I really enjoyed it. Made me feel almost like I was there. Incredible. Tent was awesome, looks like a perfect size for me. Was it a solo or a 2 person by chance? Keep making videos, very authentic.

Been most places camping in Yellowstone. But Thorofare remains yet out there for me. Getting less and less likely as I’m getting old. Loved your video. Curious, how were you prepared if a snow dump came in since it’s Oct?

I brought the kitchen sink. I had multiple layers of waterproof clothing that I didn't put on until I got to camp. Otherwise I would burn up and soak myself with sweat. The snow didn't bother me so much as the 40 MPH wind blowing sleet and freezing rain into me. I've hiked in multiple snow storms in YSNP, but being 40 miles from the truck and knowing I was the only person out there at that time of year put a bit of a pep in my step. :)

@@longwildernesswalks --my fear at that time of year is an inaccurate forecast. Very easy to get an unforseen 1-2 ft dump of snow. Let's say your 30 miles backwoods--now what? Would your preparation allow you to get out of that scenario? Your video has me feeling young again-wondering if I could get myself to Hawks Rest!
