Hi Will! I have a problem. Whenever i push the micro amp or ce1 my low e string produces like a farting or buzzing sound whenever it is fretted or not. And it aint about the guitar because at lower gain or even acoustically this does not occur. I tried lowering the bass setting but it isnt helping. Any suggestions please?
amazing video, guys! Thanks Will and Olly, you rock, as always. I noticed you also spoke about this phase inversion effect in the in-depth video about John's tone but I have to admit my knowledge about signal chain is still at a beginner's level so I'll have to rewatch both videos several times. Before I do that, can you please help me with an answer about this? Is phase inversion required for just one single head and cab set-up? I'm about to get a Silver Jubilee and a cab and I'm curios if I also need to sort out the phase inversion as well. Many thanks
@@jules010 No, if you are going to use a “mono” setup, by inverting the phase you wouldn’t notice anything. Phase inversion is only noticeable when your ears compare it with something which is opposite “phase”. Anyway, it’s something I really wouldn’t worry too much if you’re still “beginning” with your guitar adventure.. it’s not something crucial I’d say.
Hey Olly, Will, thanks for making such a great video, extremely insightful and thorough. The part about flipping the signal phase before the amps when stacking the DS2 with the Fuzzrite was surprising, props to you for discovering this. I just tried it and it made a huge difference, I did not expect it and it blew my mind, the tone just locked into place and became much fatter and more defined. I did however encounter one major issue with it, which is that I completely lost the wah sweep of the WH10, it is as if the pedal would be behind the distortion in the signal chain instead of after it (i.e. you can barely hear the wah sweep in the background and it makes no difference to the tone). I was wondering if you have encountered this issue or might have any idea what causes it. I have tried all possible combinations of moving the phase flipping pedal in the chain with no luck, the current setup I have is DS2 -> Fuzzrite -> WH10 -> Flip Phase -> Modulation -> CE1 -> Amps. Thanks!
@@WillGalluccio I am using a Silver Jubilee Mini alongside a 20W Studio Vintage Plexi. I figured it out in the end, it was quite silly I had the CE1 in high mode which I recall Olly mentioned it would flip back the phase too. For some reason even in that case my tone was sounding much better when flipping it right after the dirt pedals. Still curious if you have any thoughts, I have one more thing I want to try now which is to see what happens if I flip only the Jubilee Signal path (but making sure to readjust it post amps to not cancel themselves out)
@@radulacraru97 Okay, I discussed about this with Olly, and he seems to recall it was something about using HIGH Mode on the CE-1 while at the same time using some "sketchy" buffer right before the CE-1. Low mode should solve the issue in theory, but if you want to use High mode for some reason, I would suggest you snagging one of my latest (2022 - present) CE-1 units which includes a "perfect" buffer for High mode as a switchable mod inside. Flipping only one amp (pre) would be interesting, although it's something purely experimental! I remember I accidentally did such a thing in the past and it didn't lead me to any interesting results, and up to today I am still using the "phase" configuration you see in this video, as it's still unbeaten to me!
@@WillGalluccio ah yeah, I am actually using one of your CE-1 units here which I just got recently, a couple of months back 😅. Are you referring to the regular low/high mode switch, or you mean there is another switchable mod inside if I open the unit? I will definitely spend some more time troubleshooting this and figure out what random pedal I have in the chain that messes up with the high mode buffer of the CE-1. I usually prefer the high mode as I can get some more brightness/punch out of it than in low mode. Yeah I will try inverting just one signal out of curiosity, when listening to each track in mono, for the Jubilee inverting the phase definitely is the right thing to do, for the Plexi however, it kinda makes it less of a difference and I find both options sounding kinda similar, so I am unsure which one is better, could be because I have it setup quite dark and it is harder to tell.
@@radulacraru97 consider that generally phase changes are more noticeable when you’re listening to something in stereo.. simply because you are “comparing” two signals, so they might interact between them in unpredictable ways. Instead with a mono signal it could be harder to spot any difference. Anyway, I’d love to get in touch with you and speak about this maybe through social media if you happen to use any. PS: yeah, I meant inside the pedal there you should find a bunch of switchable mods
Hey Will I just tried the CE-1 Ensemble Crunch with the DS2 at max level and it almost blew my ears. The volume spike is there if you use a clean channel. Did you add something else to the chain? I've tried with guitar -> ds2 -> ce1 -> clean channel
You would need to use the CE-1 Crunch on High mode with level quite high, and then turn down a lot your amplifier master volume. This way, you would saturate the DS2 volume jump with the crunch itself.
@@WillGalluccio does he every use the jubilee on Crunch / gain mode? Or does John have both amps running on clean channel the whole show. I never see his Marshall foot switch for silver jubilee on his pedal board.. I’ve been trying to use my two Amps in stereo and it’s been tricky.. I get a jump in sound on the major and not the jubilee, maybe because my jubilee’s on gain mode (edge of breakup) and major is cleaner. So the compression front jubilee handles DS-2 better and major just gets super loud…
@@JrsLazyFace86 He uses both amps on the edge of breakup but the Jubilee is set on clean channel. The Major has got more headroom, so it’s clear how it jumps more. In a live situation at high stage volume it wouldn’t be an issue, and neither when micing the cabs + applying compression from the mixing desk.
Hi Will, This project is amazing, congrats! Now make a mini version and take my money! Seriously though, I'd like to ask you, what set of settings would you recommend in a Major if I were to make a couple of Kemper profiles out of it? (for John's tone) I'm asking this because there's a guy who makes Kemper profiles with a Marshall Major and he's offering to make me a set of Frusciante profiles. Thank you!
I recently bought the silver jubilee combo amp, and I currently have the Marshall DSL40C. I don't have the jubilee yet because, unfortunately, it is back-ordered for about a month or two. My plan is to split the signal between the jubilee and dsl40 with the CE-1. Do you have any advice on that? Do you think the DSL40C could be a good substitute for the major? The DSL40 is 40 watts, which i can bring down to 15 watts, and the jubilee is 20 watts, which I can bring down to 5 watts. What do you think? Thank you!
Don’t worry much about wattage, you’ll find a way to level them and match their output somehow. Consider that if you split the signal with a CE1, you very likely need some sort of ground lift box to isolate one of the two signals. Otherwise you’ll create a ground loop and hear low frequency hum in one of the two amps
The SSL1 pickups can definitely help you getting there more! Although one very important thing is setting their height very accurately. You have very fundamental stuff so yeah, seems like a good time to think about improving the pickups
I would put it near the very end of the chain if you want to build up loops with different effects layers, otherwise if you want a clean loop to then play with pedals you should put it at the start of the chain. Thank you for your words, I’m very glad I helped
Goog demo ! can you help me please, I have the same pedal, the preamp works well but when I turn on the chorus there is a crackle on a fairly high volume, when I lower the volume you can't hear the crackle less. It is normal or no ?
Is the Big Muff from 2000, EC3003A that has the true bypass going to accomplish the same tone as the one without true bypass shown here? TIA You guys are awesome!
