FUNDRAISER: www.gofundme.com/f/filmfundraiser Please help us to continue transferring these rare 16mm film reels that cost us anywhere from $275 to $350 per reel depending on the size of the film reel. We use Yale Video and Transfer in Valencia, CA to transfer our footage. Ironically, Yale Video is that same company that shot this footage over 5-decades ago. With nearly 1000 16mm film reels in our collection from 1969 to 1973, it's imperative that we get as much financial help as possible to continue posting newly transferred content on the Tommy Hawkins RU-vid channel.
Any amount donated would be greatly appreciated! We thank you in advance for your support!
Top-ranked UCLA improved to 8-0 with the 79-53 win over No. 6 Ohio State. Bill Walton recorded 14 points and 13 rebounds in just 17 minutes for the victorious Bruins.
I read somewhere they Cus D’Mato didn’t rate Sugar Ray as the best ever. He said he was too focused on offence to worry about defence, would get hit a lot and cut, so wasn’t good enough defensively to tick that box.
Love this. A time capsule of a very different time. My Dad was an assistant on those teams and I remember Coach Everett and the other coaches very well, and roaming that campus as a small boy.
Thank you for this Tommy Hawkins, I remember watching this broadcast early on a Sunday morning approximately about 3:00 A.M. back in Providence R.I. I was a staunch P.C. Friar fan at the ripe old age of 10 years old at the time. While I was heartbroken that the Providence College Friars fell apart in the 2nd half it was a noble attempt in an away game against the unbeatable UCLA Bruins that was a masterpiece of fundamental basketball technique. What was even more devastating to me was their loss in the final four to Memphis State in 1973. They were blowing Memphis State off the court in the 1st half, early in the second half their center the great Marvin Barnes comes down from a rebound and twists his knee. Marvin left the game and without the nation's leading rebounder their 20 point lead dwindled down to where they could not recover and were eliminated that day from the final four. Memphis state went on to face UCLA where Bill Walton had the best game of his collegiate career and saw UCLA win the NCAA Championship again. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened had Marvin Barnes not twisted his knee in the 2nd half of the Memphis State Game. Could the momentum of thrashing Memphis State have given the P.C. Friars the juice they needed to beat UCLA we will never know. I just want to Thank You Tommy for allowing me to be a 10 year old boy again in Providence R.I. for 17 Minutes and 54 Seconds. Regards Mikey Capp Reply
Bradley would average 78 points/game in 1972-73. In this game they lost, 73-38. This team and the 1967-68 team with then Lew Alcindor were Wooden’s best teams in the 10 championships in 12 years run.
Mr. Hawkins, is that you on the film interviewing? How tall are you Sir? Ali was 6’2 and half to my knowledge, and you seem to be taller than him. Also if you don’t mind me asking, how was he to you off camera? Thank you for sharing these ❤
Tommy Hawkins passed away in 2017. And yes, he is taller than Ali. Tommy stood 6-5 and was a former L.A. Laker before becoming a sports interviewer for NBC.
Digger Phelps’ first Notre Dame squad. They were no match for the Bruins, but by the next year Phelps brought in Shumate, Brokaw and Clay, then Dantley in 1973-74. They improved from 6-20 in ‘71-72 to 26-3 in ‘73-74, including ending UCLA’s 88 game win streak.
@TheMiketyson9 those guys r B & C list fighters Joe fought 2 A list fighters & lost won once he didn't Larry shavers kentorn sonny Patterson . Barely beat Ali
@terrenceperkins5282 honestly I love ali too if you see by my profile but come on now you don't have too tear someone down to lift with another person up and also for his whole life muhammad ali had to deal with the fact that joe frazier in their first fight in joe,s words put him on his ass while ali never could and also bro fix your spelling
@terrenceperkins5282 also another thing, buddy ali also fought everyone on that list if you check his record so I guess you can say ali fought b and c fighters but that's disrespectful because everyone on that list have a pretty good overall record and we're tough fighters
Thanks for making this possible. I was a junior at UNC when this film was shot (1971-72 season). A Final Four team that season after winning the NIT the previous one.
Amat is practicing for its defeat with Blair (see Bishop Amat vs Blair '69 on youtube) for the cif championship--the great Pat Haden was running for his life all night--Amat used a stacked defense to keep the Blair pair in check while #74 of Blair Doug Erickson was destroying the Amat offense-- every play was a broken play and only Hadens amazing talents kept Amat in the game--they were lucky to score even once--Blair went undefeated that year...55 years ago

What a war the first fight truly was, two great warriors going at it same with the 3rd fight they were a bit slower knew each other's plans yet it still was two great warriors. Much respect to both Smoke and Ali. RIP, you both certainly earned it.
I think this video is from 1972, Walton's first year on the varsity, and Henry Bibby is playing, and he graduated in '72. In 1971, Walton's freshman year, freshmen weren't yet eligible to play on the varsity.

The picture and audio qualities makes viewing these films just like attending a game. Without a broadcaster voice, but with the natural crowd reactions loud and clear it is almost like being in the stands.
