In 2010 we disconnected cable TV as we'd rather be out channel surfing the San Juan Channel, the Swinomish channel, and many others on our boat. Our goals for our videos is to let you experience what boating on our Ranger Tug has to offer and provide ideas for you on your own Ranger Tug.
Our boat is named Channel Surfing, we are Martin and LaZina. We cruise all over the Salish Sea which covers the Pacific Northwest, Canada. We are also planning a trip into Southeast Alaska.
Join us on our adventures as we explore, upgrade our boat, and provide education on boating in the gorgeous Pacific Northwest and Canada.
Please consider subscribing and join us as we cruise around in our Ranger Tug RT27 outboard.
I have had both..When my 300hp outboard gave me trouble in seas, I tried to get to it..Even ir you did manage to get the cover off all you will see is electronics..With my biesel working on it was much easier..You are not going to work on a OB underway
Great overview. Agree 100%. We are lucky to own a slip in Anacortes to keep our boat. This past winter, we moved the boat down to Dagmars to do some routine maintenance (bottom paint, outdrive service, transducer upgrade, etc) It saved a ton of money on haulouts and yard time. To top it off, we rent our slip out over the winter for double what we paid at Dagmars. You never come out money ahead, but it sure felt like it. My only complaint is the freeway grime. It wasn't bad over winter, but when it came to spring and dryer weather, it became a chore. It takes some effort to keep ahead of it.
It's a shame they didn't install a propane oven, as in the R27-OB. That convection microwave would crush the house bank. It also appears that even with the additional length and beam width, the galley storage is less than the R27. But the stern bench seat is neat.
Hi Martin, thanks for this video on Dagmars. The staff there have likewise been very helpful and informative. Right now we're in eastern WA, but next year plan to return to the Puget Sound area for at least a while and use Dagmars for the same reasons you mention, as we have the same boat. May I mention how we also enjoyed your accounts of your Alaska trip. Best of good fortune, Prentice
Dagmars does have a lot of perks for what you pay per month. If you want your boat on land, and I do, for the money I haven't found anywhere else thats close. You do have to watch the tides and the Train Bridge can slow you down but you just have to plan for that. We know several boaters that have left Everett Marina and cost was part of it. They do have a small Yacht Club with reasonable dues we are in and Snohomish Marine is on site. Our boat is too big to trailer so this works well for us.
We are about to purchase a 2019 R27. I am asking where do you keep a garbage container on the boat for use in the cooking area? Do you keep recycle things too?
We have a round garbage can that we move around. It's in the cabin when underway, and out in the cockpit when stopped. When we load the boat, we strip off as much of the packaging as we can so as to generate less waste.
I think you forgot two things . 1. The initial cost of each type of engine, I would think an inboard with all of the mechanical work involved would be a lot higher. 2. If for some reason you have to replace the engine, an outboard would be much cheaper. Any thoughts?
Alan did a cost comparison of his C28 with a inboard vs the RT27-OB outboard. The inboard engine was about $30k and the Volvo inboard $60k (a few years ago). I hope I don't have to replace an engine.
I’m currently working directly with Powertech on sizing a prop. I have looked a lot at the sharrow. It’s $5,000 a prop. I’m within about 10 pct performance of the sharrow on a 5 blade prop with some modification made to it. I’d like to know how good I can get out of a prop for less than $1k.

In this video I go over the differences between an LE and a NW edition. The diesel heater or the air conditioner fit under the helm seat. Not both. You also need a spot to put the 3000 watt inverter (NW edition comes with a 2000 watt). The 3000 watt inverter would normally go under the stove, o the bulkhead. However in a NW edition this space is filled with the 5 gallon diesel tank. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vcdYPw0JPrc.html
Right at about 11:30 you mention a window treatment that I can't quite understand. The CC calls it Hydra Sim but I can't find that. Can you tell me what exactly you said? Thanks
The ceramic coat applied to the hull is an alcohol based solution. The hydraserum after-care is a water-based ceramic coating. The hydraserum acts as a sacrificial layer to help the ceramic coating not wear off as fast (wear off the hydraserum first). I go over Channel Surfing twice a year with the hydraserum to hopefully prolong how long my ceramic coating lasts. For the windows (and stainless steel rails), they are coated with the hydraserum. However, glass and stainless is not very pourus so it lasts about a month. two coats of Hydraserum on the windows works better than Rain-X. In this video, timestamp 08:00 you can see how well the Hydraserium works on the windows. Unfortunately, we also midjudged weather in Johnstone Strait and were punished severely for it. With all the water we took over the boat, Johnstone wore off the Hydraserum in a little over an hour of abuse. Under normal boating conditions it lasts about a month on the windows so I don't have to use windshield wipers. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ThcKLiyTwMY.html
Thanks for the info! Contemplating a ranger tug. Would it be feasible to run the water heater to preheat it as I'm traveling to my destination? Will the 300 hp Yamaha make enough energy to keep the batteries topped off while the water heats up?
The boat consumes about 10 amps when underway. Chartplotter, radar, sonar, refrigeration… etc…. The hot water heater will draw 65 amps. The Yamaha 300 will provide at most, 50 amps. You will run a deficit running the hot water heater when underway.
For the "suicide knob", what position did you find best? 2 o'clock, 10 o'clock? I was thinking the 2 o'clock position since I'm right-handed, but then, the 10 o'clock and using my left hand on the wheel (right hand on the throttle) would work better for docking. What did you find? Thanks!
Put it 1/2 way in between the spokes of the wheel. There is no 2 o’clock or 10 o’clock position. Autopilot when enabled will move that position each time it’s engaged as the autopilot drives the boat.
Wa state marine park buoys are limited to boats 45’ and less. They have rules are rafting multiple boats off one buoy. You can raft up to 3 boats, depending on the size and weight of the boats. Each boat still has to pay their moorage fee for using the buoy even when rafted.
I have no idea either. I'm a cold weather boater. I will, however, look into the Mabru 12volt DC air conditioner as I talk to a lot of boaters back east in the hot climate.
We have the same problem with our 2024 R27. Currently doing the loop and have to work around it every travel day. Work around is simple as you detailed - but till gets annoying on long runs to get the low fuel alarm and Zero remaining when 20 NM from our destination. I’m calling Garmin Support as you suggested on Tuesday. Thanks for the video and info updates.
Hello. I would like to ceramic coat my sail boat and my rowing skull. There is lot of ceramic coat on the market. It is very confusing. It would be very helpful if you could mention the brand you use. Thank you.
The biggest advantage to keeping the boat in the water is that you will use it at least twice as much. We used to trailer our house until we bought a waterfront house. When you do the math it almost pays for itself to own waterfront
