looks good! I especially like the bike trailer for it want to see more of that! I reckon it might work better to have the sheet tied at the back, and the free end come from the front back to your hand. it will be the same mechanical advantage but the ergonomics of pulling towards your body will be a lot easier

You might be right. I had actually moved the sheet around to a couple spots, and I wasn't 100% satisfied with where it ended up. I kept bashing my knuckles on the gunwhale lol. I am planning to build another bike trailerable sailboat at some point and I'll try and document the trailer and design considerations a bit more.

@@HITABikes have you seen fossilfool? He has a good one. Although i think the outrigger canoe format has special potential here

@@dominictarrsailing yep, when I was building the trailer for my sabot I was searching for anyone else that has done a bike trailerable sailboat and he was like the only one who had come up. I love the look of his skin on frame boat. The outrigger design has the advantage of only being 16" wide so it was easy to maneuver on the bike despite the length. I used 1/8" ply instead of the 1/4" the plans called for and then just put a couple sheets of glass on the bottom so it ended up being pretty light. Also having no centerboard means she was easy to launch from the beach. That said, you kinda have to beach launch because it takes at least 30 mins to lash up and rig and it can't be rigged on the trailer. Best part of the design tho is all of the attention she got and being really fun to sail. Not gonna win any races upwind but quite fun to slice through the waves on a beam reach. Here's hoping I can get some workshop access again soon.

@@HITABikes nice! that's gonna be light! though I would bet the hull would flex a lot being mostly a C shape. Actually in my opinion the sides on the Melanesia are a bit low I think it would be a lot more seaworthy (and structurally strong) with a deck / self draining cockpit. I've done a few outrigger canoes with trolleys, but usually pretty rickerty improvised trolleys, and I've always just walked them, is some cases... quite long distances! (5km) Easier to be extra carefully than to break something and have to fix it. I saw a (car) trailer that Gary Dierking built, that had the outrigger assembled but tipped sideways so when he got to the beach just had to put the sail on. I'd want to be confidant that it isn't gonna tip over before towing it on a bike though.

Man, this episode of HITAB was kinda heavy. I really appreciated the risk matrix. It seems like most of our risk analysis happens from an emotional standpoint (i.e. flying on a plane is scarier than riding in a car), and applying a logical framework helps us better deal with the risks in modern society.
@HITABikes

It is kind of a heavy topic, but I hope some viewers will make it a point to think through the risk matrix. It can't tell you what to do but it can definitely help whatever your were already going to do become less risky.

It was pretty fun. I kinda want to make another boat, but perhaps a small river pram with oarlocks and a balanced lug rig. We shall see if I can get like 4 months of workshop space some winter.

We went back by this spot the other day. Thousands of healthy looking strawberry plants but alas, berry season has passed us by. Definitely gonna stop by there next june

Cool bike you built. Ha, I have a 90s mountain bike, a sweet steel Scott Superslope that I’m putting drop bars, with a high rise stem because of its geometry and RH tires (Rat Trap Pass). It’s seven speed so I haven’t figured out shifting yet but am thinking maybe barbends (the Uno or similar). Derailler is the venerable Shimano M310 with the big pulley wheels. I installed Avid Short cantilever brakes so need to find brake levers or brifters with the shifting that will work. I’m going to look into that bar tape you used. It’s for riding gravel trails beside railway lines around here (Ontario Kawarthas). I may want knobbier tires like you used and have never used RH tires before.

That sounds like a sweet project! I love the color ways on those old Scott bikes. Please tell me yours is the white pink purple version. Let me know how you like the RTPs. I almost went for those instead. I'm also curious as to what you end up landing on for shifters. For my son's Kona blast drop bar conversion we went with sensah ignite brifters. They were pretty cheap but have performed just fine. Best of luck on the build!

@@HITABikes yup it’s the pink white and purple one. I’ll tell you about the tires when I have it together. I’ve even thought about mounting trigger shifters to the drop bar just right of the stem as I already have nice hooded levers in the parts box but I’m checking out brifters and those sensah brifters you mentioned. Sensah is a needed shakeup in the component market.

interesting. there must be some rust converter that's also a lacquer. it would make treatment of these old frames a breeze, you could just spray it willy-nilly without leaving stains on things you don't want stained
@HITABikes
@HITABikes 4 месяца назад
There's a few products on the market, but I haven't seen a lot of steel frames with serious rust damage unless they were stored outside. At any rate Montreal is the saltiest place I have ever been so in a year or two we can test this theory.

The only camera I have is a super old SLR with absolutely the wrong lens for shooting indoors, so I hope ya'll like the retro vibe because that's how it's gonna be for a while. I did at least buy a mic for the next video 'tho.
