This fine production is the benchmark of what Grand Opera should be! I saw it in 2023 near the end of its run and will never forget the spectacular visuals and their overpowering effect on me. It was really something to see in person and I will never forget seeing it.
Pavarotti in forma strepitosa ed all'apice della sua carriera! Wixell, poi, un Marcello straordinario, cantante troppo sottovalutato. Che dire poi della Scotto e Paul Plischka.
Listen to this for two and a quarter hours of stunning singing and orchestral playing. Visually, the production is very static, gorgeously dressed, but with oppressive sets that tower and over-crowd the stage - once the entire company is on-stage, there's hardly any room to move. But the result does provide a luxurious canvas for the beautiful music that emerges. Elvira may be rather large, but that is of no consequence, her singing is wonderful, an absolute joy whether in her solos, or in ensembles where her high notes ride securely over the rich musical textures. Perhaps the staging is "over-done" to compensate for a story that provides little opportunity for action, but it does provide much to engage the eye while the ear is happily engaged from the first orchestral note at the opening to the very final note from the entire company. In a word - enjoy!
Eine schöne Aufführung. Diese Oper ist mehr für die kleinen Kinder und ausgezeichnet, um ihnen das Böse und die Rettung durch die ewig präsente Göttlichkeit zu zeigen. Gut is die Übersetzung, weil Kinder bei Euch die deutsche Sprache nicht verstehen.und die Sprache ist hier unverzichtbar. Das Schönste ist natürlich der Song: "Abends wenn ich schlafen geh, vierzehn Engel um mich stehen" , einmalig 1953 unter Karajan von Elisabeth Schwarzkopf und Elisabeth Grümmer gesungen. Schließlich ist zu loben, dass die Atmosphäre so gut eingefangen ist. Allerdings muss der Vater auf dem Besen umgekehrt sitzen.
I've loved this telecast since it was first broadcast in 1988. I've been an opera fan for over 55 years and I saw Pavarotti & Domingo & many other greats, but I still consider Neil Shicoff's performance in this telecast to be the single best operatic portrayal I've ever seen. Great vocalism, complete immersion in the role! The production, itself, was so wonderful, unlike the current terrible production the Met has.

finalmente un'esucuzione davvero verdiana regia e costumi ottimi il maes tro armillato non si discute dove c'e' verdi, cast di preim'ordine bene orchestra e coro ve lo dice un bussetano doc dalla piazza verdi busseto
Für mich weitgehend die beste Performance!!! Die Solisten sind fantastisch - „Crème de la Crème“ der dramatischen Stimmen von heute. Der Chor singt mit wunderbaren Präzision und Leidenschaft. Das Orchester meistert eine fantastische Virtuosität. Maestro Barenboim ist auch als Dirigent immer eine Extraklasse.
I swear this great opera production was staged in 1929, not 1989 with all those singers masquerading in black face. You cannot convince me this production of Verdi's great opera couldn't find a person of colour in the opera world who could sung those parts in freakin 1989.
That's irrelevant now. You have productions now where Aida is white and Amneris is black. I do pity though that they used to paint singers. It was just wrong to do so. But it was a different time.
Your comment was so intriguing! At 1:30:4xx there's a hint of gondolas but I certainly missed the full Barcarolle. It was upstaged (as it were) by the duel. Odd production choice. It would have been wonderful to feature Troyanos rather than a bunch of stage business.
Can you try to find a production of Fidelio sung in Spanish? I have a playlist of productions of Fidelio in different languages, and I'm trying to find more to add to it. So far, I have the original German, English, Italian, French, Czech, Russian, Dchtch, and Hungarian.
