My doubt is that having two compact Leica cameras with some wind the sensor gets a dot of dust due using the zoom. For this reason this compact cameras has to being send to clean them either the factory or a Leica dealer ...they can only being desembled at Leica. This always happen when you have wind in the area were you are shooting.

I'm glad you enjoyed using the OM/Olympus system. For years I used Canon (and I still have a 5d and a lense around), unfortunately my spouse viewed my gear as a vacation impediment, and would give me the stink eye when I started packing it, " don't you have a smaller camera" was the retort. I picked up an Olympus PEN-f two lenses that covered an effective 24-300mm that fit into a small sling camera bag. It gave me great images and the PEN-f had most of the functionality I use on the regular. I started adopting Olympus because the camera I bring with me is always better than the one left at home, and I haven't suffered for want of anything. I hope you get more time with the system. As for my current kit, I use the OM1 mk2 and the OM-1, 12-100 f4, 40-150 2.8, 12-40 2.8, 25 1.8, and a 45 1.8

Great tips! I have 2 telephoto lenses. One is very lightweight but fixed at F/11 (Canon RF 800mm F/11) which is great for hiking on sunny days. The other is heavy ( Canon RF 200-800mm) which I use in my popup blind for wildlife photos when I am waiting and not walking much.

Thanks Leigh, I've just got my D-Lux 8 and you've made sense of the customisable buttons and how to adjust and save profiles. I too love taking 'street' photos inside museums with the dynamic interplay of people and objects - this camera seems ideal for that purpose. On a technical note, I'm still not sure where all the data for each individual photo is kept. I have them in the camera (card), the Leica FOTOS gallery (?), on Lightroom (ADOBE cloud) and in my iPhone camera roll (iCloud) - or how to trim the 'data-fat' without loosing photos. And I'll be interested in finding out if geotagging with the phone app and camera has a significant impact on battery life (both phone and camera). Early days, eh.

Loved your video. I have a D-Lux 8, maintain notes on Google Docs, and I just recorded your settings there. I have a question. The manual says, “Three memory slots are provided to store custom settings, plus the factory setting, which is always available and cannot be modified (Default Profile).” I don't understand this because I can select the Default Profile, make changes, e.g., Film Style, switch to a different profile (with a different Film Style), then switch back to the Default Profile, and the Film Style is as I set it. It clearly can be modified. Please make sense of this for me.

I use the early predeccessor: the E-m1 Mk 2, and a bevy of lenses: 17mm f1.8, 25mm f1.4, 12-32 zoom, 12-40 f2.8 zoom and the 40-150mm zoom. GREAT camera. Currently looking for a smaller body like the GX8, so I can be more unobstrusive. It blows my mind that my lenses can be mounted to even smaller bodies like the e-pm1.

I had the D-Lux 7, launched in November 2014 and identical to the Panasonic Lumix LX 100. Unfortunately, the Leica D-Lux 8 is disappointing compared to the D-Lux 7. Me would have expected more technical progress, but the innovations are hardly worth mentioning. Instead of real improvements, it seems as if a few steps have been taken backwards. Less good Viewfinder. 10 year old technology? Why? Too bad, I was hoping for a real upgrade! And I don't see the point in paying €600 more for it. You'd be better off looking for a Lumix 100 II. It can do the same. The only plus point would be the new “Leica Like” menu.

P.S. Funny tht you mention the gawkers who just stop in the middle of the road ... A few years back I had been hunting the hard to find Desert Big Horn Sheep in the Anza Borrego desert here in southern California, when all of a sudden when deciding to call it a day, there was a herd of sheep meandering in the desert not far from the road. I got out and made some amzing photos of them with my 40-150 f2.8 and the amazing EM1X. All of a sudden a car stopped behind my car and a girl got out and mentioned to her friend, that she was going to get close to make a selfie. I told her that the males would head butt her into Nevada and that would be a bad dicision. There were 4 big males with all thier girlfriends and I'm sure they would not have liked a selfie from some careless human ... heehee.

Great video, I have been watching you thru time since your beginning. $/3s is amazing, I have bben 4/3s since my first E500 in 2005 I think. I also went down the Nikon D4s, D750, and the amazing D500, but I always gravitated back to my extensive olymppus setup. I finally sold all my film cams and other digi cams, and settled on the Olympus setup as I just know how to process the files. On my flickr feed with the same handle as YT, one can see the photos I create with Olympus cameras. I shoot micro, macro, birds, wildlife, landscapes, and my new fun thing to do is astro with the EM1 mkiii with starry sky autofocus which is perfect every time, coupled with the amazing 300 f4, I have made some neat astro shots. Cheers from Alpine, CA

I recommend to stick to one camera, one lens and one type of B&W film (the cheapest one), until you master this wonderful world of analog photography. Once you feel that your wings are strong enough, you can use any type of camera, lens or film.

I have Nikon's ranging from the model S rangefinder to the F and F2 series. My earliest AF was the N2020 and the latest the F5. For Medium format it's all Mamiya with the C220 being my favorite and the C330 as a backup. Mamiya lenses lenses were fantastic for sharpness and rendition and the complete lack of any mirror slap made for superb sharpness. Then there is my Toyo Monorail in 4x5. Two aspects of shooting large format is the image quality and the simple fact that you must slow down and seriously think about every single image.

Hello I don't know if you will respond or if there is another way of contact you prefer for asking questions(anyone is welcome to answer)? New to your chanel and didn't really felt like writing on the wall of your Facebook page, didn't see a message option 😺. To the point I don't have a camera at all right now and this is probably a quite uncommon comparison but how would this stack up against a Nikon p1000? I will use it primarily for birding and nature stuff like moose and wolf if I'm lucky. Does a kit like that work well as a spotting scope as well as a camera? How close do you get compared to the approximated 3000-MMs of the P1000 with the full frame sensor or does the higher image quality just let you crop way harder at home? I know my way around analog scopes but digital sensors are way out of my realm. I understand that these are probably worlds apart but I could borrow a camera house from my father so the investment from my side would be about the same, I don't know the name of the house but it's a Nikon that was brand new 10 years ago and cost about 3000 euro so probably about 3500 dollars at the time. He's gear is more for street and macro so not good for open fields. What do you think is the best way to start? A small multitasker with that will underperform but has great zoom and can make great pictures if you got your shit together (I have seen you) or get a proper teleobjektive like this and get my own house in the future? Is the zoom on the p1000 a total game changer that lets you see stuff you can't with a tube like that? What I know of scopes you divide the length of the tube with the diameter of the eyepiece but I'm not sure how it works with sensors, are the approximated 3000MMs a result of small sensor just like a small eyepiece would produce a greater magnification? Time the round this up, hope you or someone else with experience can give me a nudge in the right direction, I'm kinda big guy so 1 here or there doesn't really matter. Great Chanel looking forward to replies, greetings from Sweden

3 years later, and people are still benefiting from your review. Thank you. For me it is the cost benefit equation for long stand-off macro, and astro. The sorts of things that someone specialising in such things will find it beneficial to invest the big bucks, but for those of us with a mere enthusiast level of interest in those subjects, will find the P950/P1000 good enough for the money. And all photography, from my expensive pro-gear for product photography, to the simple pleasure of taking pictures for no reason at all, is always a case of working within limitations. It is usually just amateurs who think that we need to always work with the greatest resolution, best lenses, etc. My best photographs were taken on a 1960's Minolta Autocord, a camera that is very humble by modern standards, but taking photographs is never down to the best gear. It is always down to the creativity of the lump of meat behind the camera, and sometimes lower spec gear inspires and facilitates the creative spirit more than grander specced gear. The P950 is one such lower specced cameras. It inspires, not by being perfect, but by having a lens that can reveal things we would not otherwise see, like your herd of elk, or for me, the craters on the Moon, or Saturn's rings, or a small critter keeping its distance from me.

On rangefinder cameras, remove the lens cap before you leave the house. You aren't looking through the lens, so you can't tell if you have the cap on when you take the picture.

I recently replaced the light Seals in my Pentax Spotamatic SP11. I did not realize I had a problem with the light Seals until I shot a roll of film. Nothing came out when i had the roll developed. On inspection the light Seals were badly deteriorated. I checked light seal replacement on RU-vid and found I could make my own for a few dollars in supplies from Walmart which I did now I have a functioning Spotamatic again for a few dollars in repairs

Hi Leigh, I've only just found your channel, and I'm curious to go back in time and see what you have to say about all that beautiful gear on the shelves behind you. I have one question for you for now: have you spent any time in the past with any of the Micro 4/3 cameras/lenses out there? Olympus was my entry into my photography hobby as a dad and occasional backpacking or travel. It's been a pleasure to have access to amazing quality gear that's generally smaller/lighter and cheaper that APSC/Full Frame/Medium Format systems. Interested what you think about this gear, if you've ever used it much. Thanks!

My background when starting was the days of film and darkrooms. Did newspaper photos. Cameras back then the standard lens that came with the camera was the 50mm. Now they are called the Nifty 50!. For those that want to shoot now day cameras in "Manual mode" They should shoot with film cameras. Back then it was known as ASA now iso. Slides are unforgiving compared to just regular film. For those that want some fun, bring a film camera with you along with the digital , and take photos with both. compare the difference. Just remember unlike digital film can get a little pricey

Lots of possibilities. One thing i started doing very early was watching the rewind knob on 35mm cameras. I thought i had film loaded correctly and advanced it as usual, watching the counter go up, but I was expecting the roll to end around frame 25, at about 30 i just thought to try the rewind knob to see if there was any tension on the film and heard a click that didn't seem right. I opened the back, and the film had disengaged from the take-up spool and the sprockets were just slipping under the film. I was 12 at the time and this was a Minolta srt variant. I was used to Nikon and Pentax, so the different sounds didn't set off alarm bells. Now over 40 years later thats a health check for me when using any manual advance camera to check that rewind knob to assure film is moving as intended. I missed some photo opportunities that day, but learned a lesson.

Oh boy, we ALL make mistakes. I have been shooting film for 50+ years. Last month I went to a 1940's weekend and so wanted a vintage look, B&W of course, wanting to pull the film I set the ASA differently to box speed, only to realise when I had finished it and ready to put another film in, I had left the setting for the pushing of the previous roll of film ooops. I ending up pushing instead of pulling, not the end of the world, but that's life. I finished the day with a phone.

The spec sheet on DPReview says the D-Lux 8 has digital zoom between 4.3-6.2. Can you confirm that? All I read and see is that it only comes with optical zoom. If so, how do you digitally zoom with the 8?
